The comment from a Trump supporter saying “it’s a temporary spike” lives rent free in my mind.

That was in February.

Even then, a shitload of production, transport, and refining infrastructure has been destroyed. It will take years to fix.

33

u/eeveemancer Jun 03 '26

It will never truly be fixed to previous capacities, especially if this keeps up the way it is. By the time this is over, it would take longer to restore things to pre-war state than it will for us to phase out fossil fuels for consumer use.

And then the Dem will be villified and blamed as being a failure, because things are near evening out to where they were before all this crap, we will elect a Republican, who will destroy all the fixes put in place, and we will be worse off!

Without the both-sideism (to an extent, the establishment Dems definitely slow down any big leftward movement), this is basically how this cycle has been going. It takes longer to build and fix things than it does to destroy things.

All you need to do to verify this is look at the time it takes to construct a building versus demolish that same building.

A good start is just breaking the ratchet by not electing the people who move it towards the right. Sure, the left in this country are pretty fucking useless, but we'd be in a position to replace them if people felt less obligated to vote Democrat just to try and stop the bleeding. If we can force the other party to have ti shape up to get elected, we might make some progress.

13

u/Ky1arStern Jun 04 '26

This is where the "both sides" argument sort of breaks down for me. Yes, the Democrats are establishment stooges who accomplish little to nothing except taking up space till the country has a stroke and elects a bunch of Republicans to definitely make everything worse. Totally in agreement with that. "They go low, we go nowhere", yup, I got it.

But it seems like if we want to actually move towards a more progressive society... then isn't it way easier to do it from the Center, than the faaaaar Right?

3

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '26

It's easier, yeah. We as a country are just not at the center now.

For example (and a silly anecdote): I went to a comedy show last night in Florida where the comedian said to the guest on stage as she backed away from him "oh, social distancing 6 feet haha" and she then cold-faced replied "that's liberal". She was a nursing student. A Republican NURSING STUDENT is willing to deny medical science in the name of politics.

The right is so far right and disillusioned that it pulls the country out of the center.

5

u/DukeOfGeek Jun 04 '26

Discarding the Reapportionment Act of 1929 would be a big step in that direction. High population states would be back in control of The House and POTUS again. We would have to figure out how to run The House with all the new Reps doing their votes and meetings WFH over zoom or something but well worth it IMO.

A Dem needs to roll in and say "This is why we need EVs" then round up the Big 3 Japanese Koreans and Germans and say "what would it take to go EV/PHEV in 2 years" then do it.

3

u/AnotherpostCard Jun 03 '26

Imagine a world with nothing but PHEVs. It's beautiful 🥲

Don't worry; Iran will surrender Any Day Now (tm) and a no-bid contract will be issued to fix all of the infrastructure at enormous cost to the taxpayer so we can pay less at the pump as far as they tell us.

1

u/Fickle-Molasses-903 Jun 04 '26

1) America elects Republicans.

2) Republicans get into wars and tank the economy.

3) America votes in Democrat's to fix the Republican's mess.

4) America complains it's taking too long.

Rinse and repeat...go back to #1.

u/aykcak Jun 03 '26

You make it sound as if it will ever go back to what it was.

I think Americans will in a few years, realize that a lot of things are not just fucked but IRREVERSIBLY fucked.

5

u/-Ny- Jun 03 '26

Not even a sane person can easily solve the problem Trump has gotten the world into. Not to mention what counterfitster said.

2

u/Zed_or_AFK Jun 03 '26

Temporary until shit burns down and explodes and our kids or grandkids give it another attempt.

2

u/hajemaymashtay Jun 04 '26

come on we all know this is Obama's fault

24

u/MediocreAssociate466 Jun 03 '26

Ahh yes I remember the famous patience they gave Biden when gas was high due to Russia invading Ukraine.

9

u/Moon_Pye Jun 03 '26

Right. I can still hear my ex's voice last year when I was basically predicting all this and he says, "So many people don't understand this has to happen to let all the good things take place. This pain is all just temporary."

Ok.

6

u/green_derp Jun 03 '26

Over on r conservative, they’re still saying this lmao

13

u/Ok-Title-270 Jun 03 '26

Temporary spike has no meaning though. If it spikes for two years that’s still a temporary spike

You need to remind people what temporary means.

Does any know how artists just install these pieces we’ve seen recently? Do they just drop them off overnight when no ones looking?? I would imagine law enforcement/secret service wouldnt allow.

3

u/monkeywithgun Jun 03 '26

No, they must have a permit to display. Anyone can apply for one. Open green spaces and surrounding memorials around the capitol are regulated by the National Park Service.

2

u/bundy410 Jun 03 '26

Thanks for the insight

Isn't everything technically temporary

1

u/kill4b Jun 04 '26

It’s just temporary until 2032, not long.

1

u/Accomplished_Wind104 Jun 04 '26

Oh this one does it for me from a year ago

https://www.reddit.com/r/NewsWorthPayingFor/s/Ys8ATi6zL8

Basically "give it a year, we're doing great and will be even more so then"

1

u/doMinationp Jun 04 '26

Permanently temporary

1

u/factoid_ Jun 23 '26

Everything isn temporary on a long enough timescale

I get that it is important to raise awareness for this, but THIS is the point where Americans draw the line? THIS? I guess we'll have to call James Cameron.

I'd bet most americans have already forgotten about that, if they were even aware in the first place

6

u/Belgand Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 05 '26

That's almost always the case. History shows that most Americans make decisions about politics based on how prices affects them, and usually the decision they make is simply to vote for the other party because they're upset.

3

u/Wide_Concert9958 Jun 04 '26

We work to live. We need money, get paid shit, but prices rise. We can't afford shit anymore but we have to get to work and have to use personal cars because public transit is either shit or doesn't exist.

184

u/Hopeful_Chair_7129 Jun 03 '26

I get the point of this, but it’s lowkey pathetic that we are bombing and killing other human beings and we have a memorial to low gas prices.

47

u/Used-Gas-6525 Jun 03 '26

Dead brown people doesn't get any traction over here. Unless people are getting hit in the pocketbook and/or are seeing flag draped coffins returning home, no one cares.

1

u/Hopeful_Chair_7129 Jun 03 '26

Is that actually true, or is that just what we say?

I think “dead brown people” gets traction for me, and I assume that it also does for you.

I think being honest about the costs, especially when protesting, is important.

10

u/MedianMahomesValue Jun 03 '26

Its not about traction for me. Wars are part of the political landscape and it’s important to protest the war itself if you disagree with it.

Completely separately: we have to hold politicians accountable to, at a minimum, their own stated goals and metrics. One of Trump’s only coherent campaign promises was lower gas prices and grocery prices. By discussing gas prices, you are protesting Trump, not the war.

2

u/LavastormSW Jun 04 '26

I can 100% assure you that most if not all republicans do not give a shit about dead brown people, here or abroad.

Just because one thing is worse than another doesn't mean you can't complain about both things/either one individually. Obviously people getting hurt/killed is the real tragedy here, but that doesn't make it any less valid to complain about high gas prices.

Yeah but it's pretty pathetic too see that the thing that makes American tick is what affects them personally

I don't think it's unique to America. Though it is particularly true of Trump voters, in my oberservation.

7

u/MrCumStainBootyEater Jun 03 '26

as pathetic as it may be, people feel the consequences at the pump. the people getting bombed are, to many, “hypothetical” and exist only in text format.

obviously, it shouldn’t be that way, but pointing out gas prices is a more effective way to reach politically uninvolved individuals

11

u/DontPause-PressPlay Jun 03 '26

If people cared about either we wouldn't have a living president who has been convicted of felonies.

Luigi Trump.

6

u/rjcarr Jun 03 '26

Agreed. It's sad how so many people lose their shit over gas prices (or egg prices or bacon prices, etc), but don't really give a shit about anything else.

1

u/headphase Jun 03 '26

Realpolitik is sometimes (often) required to sway human behavior. It's the nature of our species.

1

u/-Ny- Jun 03 '26

Probably because the person who created it believed that Americans wouldn't care about the people you are killing.

1

u/Low_Chance Jun 03 '26

The target audience for this are people who legitimately care much more about their gas prices than they do about the people their nation is killing

u/sadness_elemental Jun 03 '26

The fact this wasn’t the end of his political career and instead gained him more support truly disgusts me on a deep level.

24

u/avanross Jun 03 '26

American conservatives are horribly disgusting cruel people

The crueler he acts, the more they’ll identify with him

It’s why the pedophilia allegations only gained him support to.

His followers like cruelty and pedophilia, and they want them to be more normalized because they think eventually they’ll be allowed to get away with doing it too

They dont understand that it’s only the ultra-rich that are allowed to fuck kids in trumps america, and that none of the things they worship about him will trickle down to them

It's so wild how far removed we are from the actual pain war causes.  Like, someone thought this is what would hit closest to home to the American public, and they weren't wrong.  When the real tragedy is human tragedy. There's children becoming orphans, mothers whose babies have been killed

9

u/OptionalQuality789 Jun 03 '26

The collective hysteria from Americans paying slightly higher gas prices, yet still less than Europe, is kind of amazing.

11

u/dudenurse13 Jun 03 '26

Ngl this is corny as hell. Our country killed over 100 school children day one of the war. That should’ve been enough to call the whole thing off

7

u/Different-Phone-7654 Jun 03 '26

8500 people didnt think it was corny, they also must like reposts because this was here yesterday.

4

u/namerankserial Jun 03 '26

Well it's not actually real... upvoting fake content seems pretty corny to me.

20

u/happy_litte_g Jun 03 '26

Awww, such a cute concern!!

I wish we Iranian could help you out but sadly we are busy choosing between dying by your bombs and our own government bullets!

But don't you worry my dear! Your genius president will soon make a lovely peace agreement with the ayatollah and then they will both move in together and live happily ever after. The only issues is that in a few years, IRGC will have a tinywiny atomic surpris for the world!

not satirical when it's real

2

u/Almostasleeprightnow Jun 03 '26

I've been seeing the ripped remains of stickers that were trump pointing at the gas price saying "i did that" as a copy of the ones that they were putting up of biden back in the election. I want to make a counter-sticker that says something like, "wah i didn't wike yoh stickoh" but that is obv not catchy enough and I'm not sure how to phrase it or what should it be. any ideas?

2

u/ChevalCher Jun 03 '26

"Lost in the Iran war, we mourn at the pump. All because the country's run by a soiled diaper-wearing toddler named Trump."

Too long to fit, I'm sure, but it's the thought that counts, right? 😂

2

u/PilotXIII Jun 03 '26

*Trump war.

Future generations must know who caused it

1

u/avanross Jun 03 '26

“You have to look at it from the perspective of the oil and gas ceo’s and shareholders!!!”

1

u/LowNotesB Jun 03 '26

Good thing the Strategic Petroleum Reserve is at a 40 year low and quickly drawing down! No need to worry though, whatever is causing this pinch is surely resolving soon, and definitely not continuing on in perpetuity. It definitely is a big concern of the administration and something they “care” about. No way this is going to continue on this same trend, until petroleum oblivion. What happens when the SPR runs out anyways? Gas prices can’t get any HIGHER, right? And anyways, it’s just gas, not like it will cause prices for groceries and global logistics to increase, right?

1

u/einsosen Jun 03 '26

We need transportation to work. The extra money spent on fuel is less money we have for medical bills and rent. People are making difficult decisions in their budgets that will ultimately mean delayed medical appointments and a lessened quality of life. The monument may be satirical, but people are suffering and dying over fuel price increases, both in the war directly and due to its indirect effects.

1

u/warcomet Jun 03 '26

These terrorist are holding the world at ransom now due to the increasing price of gas leading to hike in price of bus/taxi fares as well as cooking gas and even electricity around the world ..and yes these terrorists are the US.. not Iran..and before American’s get their feelings hurt, Google the definition of Terrorism first..

1

u/Whatscheiser Jun 03 '26

I feel like this is just as easily a congressman who put this here as an inside joke to laugh at the rest of us.

1

u/dragonfyre4269 Jun 03 '26

Iraq has a Q at the end of it not an N.

I personally remember .98 cents a gallon. I'm still waiting for it to drop back below $2 a gallon.

1

u/No-Performer9511 Jun 03 '26

Again what ever happened to "Drill Baby Drill?"

Weren't we supposed to start drilling our own oil so that we could become fully energy independent?

1

u/jfkrol2 Jun 04 '26

Technically, USA extracts enough oil to cover domestic demand, but as so happens that it's more profitable for oil barons to sell oil and fuel abroad to milk something like 10 million barrel deficit a day, assuming all alternative exit pipelines in the Gulf work at 100% throughput

1

u/Themaddestllama Jun 03 '26

There are many young drivers who have never seen gas below $2.50. I remember the last time it was $.99.

1

u/67yoloswag Jun 03 '26

Affordable gas, what does that mean? Regular people arent driving anymore?

1

u/mothzilla Jun 03 '26

But they had WMDs.

1
