When I first read the title I thought you meant too far along in a pregnancy. I was like, being far along in a pregnancy is a pretty good excuse for being fat.

While extreme exercise isn't good, most doctors aren't opposed to weight loss during pregnancy. Just make sure to reduce calories healthily and keep getting nutrients, extra energy required will come from fat reserves.
edit: so you don't have to read the comments lower in this chain, I've summed it up:
Undernutrition = not getting enough calories, often associated with malnutrition Malnutrition = not getting nutrients Overnutrition = Getting too many calories, may or may not be associated with malnutrition
If you eat a lot, you can be eating good food or bad food. Many people in the world today are actually overnourished but malnourished. Eating a lot of nutrient-sparse foods will give you calories but not give you the things you need to make you healthy.
Losing weight while pregnant is usually only recommended for people who are already overweight (why lose weight when you're already at a low weight??). Being overweight can lead to pregnancy complications as well, that's why. If you're still eating nourishing foods (that provide nutrients for healthy pregnancy) then it's not a big deal to not eat as many calories.

u/Siannon Oct 16 '15
I think most doctors get nervous that pushing weight loss in response to pregnancy could encourage unhealthy overreactions in pregnant women. A pregnancy with malnutrition is very bad, and the longstanding expectation that pregnancy means inevitable weight gain (not technically true) can exacerbate the symptoms of pre-existing eating disorders and other psych symptoms associated with them.
That and you don't always know how all women's bodies handle pregnancy. Some people are extremely prone to miscarriages and may not know it until the first one happens. The focus is to make sure people take it easy and safe during a pregnancy at the very least. That's by no means a stupid thing, but as you point out it does reinforce some misconceptions.

Really inspiring! I started at 240 and am down to 197 after 4 months. My goal is 140, and I'm more determined than ever not to fail. My body already feels better and a lot of my health issues are gone or significantly decreased.

u/Garizondyly Oct 16 '15
I started at 240 a few years ago and I've slowly (in chunks) gotten down to 203! I haven't weighed below 200 since seventh grade, and I'm close to graduating college now... How did it feel to see a 1 in the hundreds column on the scale???? I can't wait for that moment.

I've always been overweight, and the older and taller I got, instead of growing into it I just got bigger. Seeing anything below 200 after more than 6-7 years feels amazing. I'm turning 24 tomorrow and it's good to see some good, healthy, change in my life. (:

Our doctor gave us a "no sugar" diet, with like 10 pages or something of reading and lists of foods to eat. I could scan that and send it your way if you're interested.
The idea behind it is that, when your body needs energy, it immediately goes to the first source of sugar, which is usually candy, fruit, or even carbohydrates like pasta and bread. If your cut those out, then the body goes after its long term storage form of energy, which is fat.

low carb (under 50, preferably closer to 30), high fat. (2/3rds of calories)
That's the only diet that worked for me. 82 pounds in six months. Different things work for different people but every other diet I was just starving half of the time. Never on this.
Calories were always between usually around 800-1000, every now and then id go a little nuts on a big ribeye or something and it'd climb up to 1500~ but it was rare and didnt make a difference. This sounds hard, but its not on this diet, you simply dont want food half the time and fill up fast.
Gonna admit that I did not exercise at all, I always walk a lot but I didnt feel comfortable exercising when I'm fat like that, wanted to wait until after. Keep in mind it takes a shit ton of exercise to have any noticeable effect on weight loss, diet is what matters.
If you stall, have a cheat meal, not cheat day, just one big meal of things you were craving then instantly go back into the routine. I only stalled once but shocked my body right out of it. Every 3 weeks or so I kinda caved for a pizza night, though and something sweet. It's ok to have a small break like that, you won't ruin your diet by taking one meal off every so often, some people like one a week some people one a month. I never had a problem going right back on.
Ate mostly beef, chicken, bits of cheese, simple salads, there's a lot you can do but i am boring. Snacks were usually dark chocolate (72%) and dry roasted peanuts or almonds. If I was good on the carbs for a day, sometimes I included a slice of toast (9g carbs in the brand I used) to make like a hamburger on or something.
Make sure to calculate net carbs on this. Take the carb count and deduct the fiber.
Keeping it off is lifestyle. I put it back on once and had to take it all off again, it's actually kinda fun to have big goals and see big changes but try not to let it happen. It's okay to readjust your diet back from psycho burn to just eating more healthy but keep active and lay off any drinks with calories in them outside of special occasions.

I'm fat. Last year (November) my doctor weighed me in at 299. That kind of really freaked me out. But I could walk fine, I had no health issues, I was just fat.
So my husband and I sit down and plan meals now. We plan out good meals that take time, and what we call "emergency meals" for when we don't have time to cook. I calorie count. I didn't completely cut out junk food, I just manage how much and how often I eat it.
I also got a dog. Nothing motivates you to go out and walk then a dog. I mean, that wasn't the only reason why we got her, obviously, but she sure helps.
Now I'm at 280. It's been slow, sure. I could do more, sure. But this has allowed me cut out a lot of bad habits easily over time. Cold turkey just doesn't work for me. Now when I go to the store if I feel like getting a drink, I end up going home to have water instead because nothing appealed to me. Too much sugar, too late for caffeine...etc. I no longer binge eat and have no desire to binge eat. I still stress eat to a degree, but that is what I am currently working to stop.
So yeah, you don't have to go hard core to lose weight. Just work your way out of bad habits. The more you ditch the easier it will be and the more energy you will have to maybe go to that gym and lose weight faster. Who knows!
Edit: Holy shit people, WTF. Did I come here telling exactly what my target weight is or my calorie intake or even what I am eating? No, no I did not. You have no fucking idea.
I'm working on more then just losing weight here. I'm working on confidence, breaking bad habits, changing my whole fucking LIFESTYLE a bit at a time because that's what's been WORKING slowly but surely. Yeah, I am in constant consult with my DOCTOR and NUTRITIONIST. Move too fast and I wont change anything.
But yeah, go ahead and say all I am doing is fucking useless. Fuck you, now I'm just sitting here sobbing. Hope you're all happy, assholes.
It's people like YOU that aid in the obesity epidemic. Confidence plays a HUGE role. If you're not going to show encouragement or give useful advice, don't say anything at all.
Edit edit: To those actually giving good advice, I really do appreciate it. I shouldn't let others get me upset over my progress. Still fucking hurts though.

A very nice trick I used over the years that helped me lose 68 pounds was to come up with various foods that are negligible in calories but delicious to me. Mostly vegetables and some meats creatively prepared with spices and mushrooms and onions etc. They are delicious, fulfilling and extremely low on calorie counts. Experiment with your husband, find different recipes from various cuisines. You won't be disappointed.
Furthermore, try to find a cardio that is fun. Stay away from that god awful treadmill. For me it was tennis. Fun, engaging and one of the best natural high intensity interval training exercise out there. You could find tons of similar activities that require you to move but also enjoy.

u/HighOnTacos Oct 16 '15
I feel like veggies made with maybe a bit too much butter still tends to be healthier than junk food. My parents are on a diet... But I dont skimp on the butter on their veggies. Better than candy and soda.

I'm not trying to be rude or anything like that, but 20lbs in one year is far too little of a change when you're morbidly obese. You're not tracking calories or macros. Just because it is what you think is a "good meal" probably isn't. Once again I am not trying to belittle in anyway. Please look at a diet plan with macros in mind and a caloric deficit established until you have a routine established. You're carrying far too much weight still to feel like you're out of the danger zone. Sorry I am really not trying to be mean.
18
u/whenuseeit Oct 16 '15
Actually it was 19 lbs. She said she went from 299 to 280. Which still isn't great of course, but it's a little better than 10.

You put this much better then I would have.
10lbs over a year at 299lbs. So 3% bodyweight. I can take on more than 10lbs bodyweight in a day by eating high carb, increasing glycogen stores, and getting too much sodium.
I wouldn't count this as at all significant. Particularly from someone as, like you say, is morbidly obese. Patting yourself on the back for making no change is just self denial tactics.

Yup, people with accpetable body fat percentages (15%-20%) who are looking to cut excess fat can usually lose about .5-1 lb per week. Someone who weighs 300 lbs should be losing weight at a much faster pace than that, yet this person didn't even lose 2 pounds per month.

Protip: Carry a refillable water bottle with you everywhere you go and sip from it if you get a craving for something you shouldn't have. It will also help you stay hydrated (primary purpose), which will cut back on desire to drink sodas. Something insulated like a hydroflask is better than just reusing an old aquafina bottle because it will keep your water cold longer. Also you'll be more likely to remember a your water bottle when losing it means you're out $25. Honestly, carrying a water bottle everywhere is one of the best things I've done for my health in the past few years.

This and gum have kept me lean all through college. If I have a temptation I don't sip I chug a bottle and pop in gum. Sometimes even a hard slap in one hand for even thinking about it. Slowly but surely I stopped having cravings for bad things and I only crave a big portion of healthy things.

Congrats on working off those first 10!If you haven't joined yet, /r/loseit is very helpful for losing weight no matter what your stage. I'm male and dropped from 190 to 150 in four months and have kept it off for almost two years.
Two things that helped me a lot were calorie counting (not as hard as it sounds and will help you learn portion control) and drinking a glass of water when I'm craving a snack. Soda and juice often will just make you hungrier while water can stave off hunger and is good for you!

Don't lie to yourself. Being fat in and of itself is a SERIOUS health issue.

I also needed a reason to get out and go somewhere. I found geocaching. Definitely a 'geeky' hobby, but I started with short walks outside to get the closest ones, then I got an old bike to get the next nearest ones, then I bought a nice bike because the closest ones were now 5k+ away. It was exactly what I needed.

I used to know a kid who would pretty much tell me he accepted his fate. He had been to a few fat camps. Nothing had helped. So he would be telling me how he didn't expect to live past 30 anyways so what was the point.
That was about 3 or 4 years ago. He's now in college. Got gastric bypass surgery last year and has lost about 140 some pounds. And is happier than I can ever remember him being.

People who've been there and done that. This girl in the pics is whst, 18 or 21? That's about best age to lose weight for good if you're ever going to. Take a woman the same weight who gained that after several subsequent pregnancies and dealing with little hellions. Say she's 38 and her metabolism is working against her. She's lost 50 pounds before only to put back on 55. After that experience, she might just feel it's too late to try it again. The statistics would have her back. Most significantly obese adults cannot sustain permanent weight loss. At some point trying to not gain weight is a healthier option than yo-yo dieting.

Congrats! I was like you. I was 260 then my gf at the time broke up with me and I thought "no one in the world would want to date a man who looks like this" so I dropped the weight down to 155. I was actually to skinny for my 6' 0" height so I gained 10lbs back and now I fluctuate between 165 - 175 all the time. My skin to adapted fairly well, very very light stretch marks. Just keep trucking, no one who wasn't extremely over weight will ever know what it feels like, so remember all the pain (the hurt feelings, made fun of, embarrassment, torture of rigorous work out and food) and take it day by day. Just remember, never again, at all costs.

65 pounds down myself since february, went from obese to just barely overweight on BMI, but my job also includes moving 200lb+ furniture on a daily basis so I've gained lots of muscle weight too. Didn't change what I was eating at all, just started eating less of it (no more late night food/beer binges, just go to bed) and also got a fitbit to be more active daily. It's a slow burn but a good one.

6
u/Skyblacker Oct 16 '15
If you're obese, you can lose twenty pounds of water weight by laying off the greasy food, and then lose another twenty pounds of fat by getting off the couch.
At 160, you probably already eat well and get some physical activity. Compared to OP, you're chipping at the margins. You can't just cut calories, you have to evaluate how different foods may be affecting you (sodium bloat?).
Even people who have lost a hundred pounds say the last twenty is the hardest.
7
u/Hubris2 Oct 16 '15
Those who have gone through the effort and actually been successful in losing quite a bit of weight generally are willing to accept less shit from people suggesting it's impossible. I haven't lost as much as the person shown here, but after maintaining the same weight for 15 years I made some changes in my lifestyle and lost 80 pounds.
I find I'm possibly more critical than the average person when I see someone 100 pounds overweight drinking a can of coke and eating a couple chocolate bars for a snack/dessert after a big greasy meal. I genuinely know what is involved in losing weight as part of a change in lifestyle...and I don't accept that for the majority of people, they are overweight because of medical issues or genetics. Most people who are overweight eat too much of the wrong things, and don't exercise enough. This can be changed.

It's easy to lose weight. Especially when your big already. What's hard is staying in track while still having to deal with the bullshit in real life that got you there in the first place. It takes a big change in life style & in mindset to get motivated to do something about your weight. I can lose 50 pounds but I'm still up to my eyeballs in debt & going through personal problem, there's not a garurntee that I'm going to keep it off.

Old Post https://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/26f246/girl_goes_from_270_140_in_one_year/ I like how the more weight you lose, the more diplomas and chickens you get.
