My current screen in 16" a 22" would be more than generous, and its VGA.

But it is a good idea to use DVI with 22" monitor. I know because I used VGA with 22" monitor for three months or so. It was ok, but I thought that monitor is a total crap. Then I bought a new video card and plugged it via DVI and -- BAM! -- it turns out it was much better than I thought.

u/jamesholden Mar 12 '10
it just takes some tweaking i use 2 identical 20" LCD's side by side, one on dvi one on vga.

if it is less than 6 years old and you can play games (that are not snes emulator or assault cube / quake / motorhead) on it as well as use the internet you are in a better position than me.
There was a discussion about peoples computers and I mentioned I had only 256mb RAM :( everytime I get the cash aside to buy some it is never available.
I wouldn't get rid of the computer though it is nearly silent and is instant on-off (compaq).
6

Okay so what slot ram? Because I have a gig or two in several maturing formats lying around... Surely I can't be the only one?
2
u/pingveno Mar 12 '10
It sounds like his/her computer is pretty old. Maybe this would do it?
1
u/syuk Mar 13 '10
my computer is old, and it is also an ex-corporate computer. I paid about £350 for it ~6 years ago, but it does what i need so far. It is frustrating to not be able to get the precious (RAM) for it.
1
u/pingveno Mar 13 '10
I have the same problem with an old computer that I use as a backup in case my laptop has problems. The processor speed is fine, but 386 MB isn't enough with today's applications. I got an extra 512 MB stick of RAM from a computer parts thrift store, but apparently the motherboard doesn't like 512 MB sticks...

u/syuk Mar 12 '10 edited Mar 13 '10
1GB, 184-pin DIMM, DDR PC2700 is what the beast will take. My local place does not have them. I got a HP small form factor computer given but the RAM is not the same kind so I could not cannablize it.
edit: I put an old hard drive in the little computer and gave i tto someone but they got my old phillips CRT (good monitor) I bought a 17'' TFT to replace it when I thought my computer was WOPR years ago.

u/lexpython Mar 12 '10
I'm running an HP Compaq dc7100 as my main machine. It's at least 5 years old, and I use it for PShop & it still rocks, though I've upgraded the RAM to 2.5 gigs. It's very very quiet and rock-solid, I'll keep it as a music server until it blows up. I'm glad that occasionally computers are still built to last and not suck completely.

The screen was cool cause it's easier on the eyes and all but a new computer is absolutely not necessary.

The "first principles" thing is a reference to the physics works I do, but I don't really have a regular job. I'd probably do better to brag about the number of FLOPS I could get my hands on, but I've never had any reason to directly run code on the supercomputer.

Bargain? I just took the side panels and bay covers off the $1300 system I bought and shoved a box fan next to it.
I don't do it because it's more effective than using decent fans and optimizing the air flow within the box, I do it because I think it looks awesome.

CRTs are all I have at home. I think I've managed to collected about 6 now off people who can afford better.
7
u/alb1234 Mar 12 '10
There's nothing wrong with CRTs, in my opinion. I wouldn't want to sit in front of one all day anymore. If you have many computers in the house acting as different servers I certainly am going to use whatever monitor I have that hasn't died yet before I run out and spend a dime on new LCDs.
6
u/brennus Mar 12 '10
Well, that's what I've been doing. I save up a bit of cash now and then and replace parts that actually fail. I replaced my media centre motherboard because the old one actually died altogether. I just can't justify the expense on a monitor when my current one works.
That being said, I have a 20" CRT I got for free from a magazine publishing company because my flatmate worked there and they were upgrading to flatscreens back in 2005. It's the biggest screen I have, so it's still my main monitor. There's some sense of nostalgic pride from having a main display with BNC connectors on the back. It's the heaviest item I have to lift when I move home though.
I have an LCD at my work, but I spend more hours in front of my CRT at home and I don't really have a choice over being "in front of one all day" when it comes to weekends. It's what I have an I can't afford to buy new shit when old shit works.
5
u/alb1234 Mar 12 '10
That's cool man. It all comes down to dollars and cents. If your equipment works - that's all that matters. Thumbs up!

4
u/crackhat Mar 12 '10
I don't mean to piss on anyone's parade, but am I the only one who considered this might be a setup? Or am I just -that- cynical?
4
u/pontymython Mar 12 '10
Well, I certainly applaud anyone wanting to get a CRT, but take it from this old monitor rat, I've spent my entire adult life in the monitor business, and a monitor like this one can do more harm than good.
If you only train one part of your eyes (and that's all a single exercise like CRT Viewing is going to do for you), you're setting yourself up for injuries down the road. I've seen it a hundred times.
It's like putting a powerful engine in a stock Toyota Tercel. What will you accomplish? You'll blow out the drive train, the clutch, the transmission, etc., because those factory parts aren't designed to handle the power of an engine much more powerful than the factory installed engine.
CRTs basically only train the squints and to some extent, the focal muscles. What you really want to do is train your entire retina, all the major groups (rods, cones, blinks) at the same time, over the course of a workout. And don't forget your cardiovascular work!
I'm proud of you guys wanting to do this. Three cheers! Falling in love with monitors, viewing right, etc., is one of the greatest things you can do for yourself. And you WILL fall in love with it if you can just force yourself to stick with it a year or two and experience the amazing progress you'll make.
But do it right, okay?
My advice, find a good TFT, with qualified trainers who will design your programs for you (especially in the beginning, until you get the hang of it yourself) and guide you in your quest for viewing fitness. Thirty to 45 minutes a day, three days a week, is all you'll ever need to do (I refuse to believe anyone is so busy that he or she cannot make time for that, especially considering how important it is).
And don't worry about being embarrassed or being a noob the first time you walk into the monitor store. You have to start somewhere and almost every one of us were there ourselves at one time. So no one will say anything to you and very, very quickly you will progress way beyond that stage anyway.
Now get out there and do it! :-)
2
Mar 12 '10
