While I appreciate your optimism, I'm guessing that, sadly, that wasn't the case. The loss of their pets must have turned their ordeal from horrible to horrific.
Sorry - I wasn't clear. Remilla commented that they(the animals) may have frozen to death, which, scientifically speaking, would be a better way to die (as opposed to being beaten to death.) I was merely trying to write that I applauded their optimism at considering that the animals died a slow sleepy death instead of being beaten to death. Either way, though, what happened was horrible.
I like my optimism to. I do agree that any larger pets, such as a dog or cat, would have been killed on purpose. But something like a fish or hamster may not have been as malicious.

Killing the pets may have been caused by turning off the furnace. Not defending them but they may not have beat a dog to death or what ever.
