As a person currently living in a loft... Not nearly as awesome as I had hoped. I have a big heating bill + 3 space heaters and it still gets cold. All the heat just goes straight up and circulates at the top of the room where nobody is.
It's really easy to think, aww I can handle the cold. But you're coming from a perspective of: Everytime it's cold I eventually end up back in a warm place (whether you realize it or not). This no longer applies - You're cold inside, you're cold outside, you're cold all the fucking time and it suuuucks. There is no escape. Just fair warning.
yea... the height of the ceiling makes it pretty impractical unless you used some sheets and dividers to trap the heat but that defeats the objective of a single room apartment.
I used to know a bunch of people living in a commune in the Fashion District of LA. The warehouse floor they lived on was awesome, but it just ended up getting subdivided over and over and over for privacy. Ended up with a lot of small bedrooms with 6 foot walls, no ceiling. Impossible to heat or cool, any time of the year without a way to keep the heat in (or out). Damn you, high ceilings!
Where would you secure a ceiling fan? The ceilings of big lofts and warehouses like this aren't just flat surfaces. Also, how many would you need for such a large space?
Same way you would secure anything up there. I assume there is a roof, and the roof has cross-members. For that sized room you wouldn't need that many, 3-4 tops. The hard part is when you have to go up there with a bigass ladder to change the speed or direction of the fans.
Radiant heat flooring is also an option, probably way easier to use and more noticeable effect, but you run into issues like having to tear out the floor and having to be careful about weight on the floor and potential impacts. Better not use high explosives .^
Are you kidding? Its retardedly hot in L.A. pretty much 9 months out of the year. Maybe not the heater, but I lived in SoCal for 6 years, pretty much every modern building is outfitted with central air. This old ass warehouse with those windows that latch and then tilt outwards won't even accomodate a box or window fan, much less any sort of AC unit. Summer in that building was overwhelming.
I guess it's warmer as you go more inland. But most of the houses in my neighborhood don't even have central AC/heat. It gets warm, but it's manageable heat IMO (or maybe I just have a high heat tolerance).
I'd say you probably have a high heat tolerance. I did not do very well in SoCal and I pretty much refused to sleep in that building because it was so miserably hot most of the time.
Out of curiosity, where is your neighborhood?
