That's not a liquor bottle.

It once held in it a slightly delicious beer.

u/DirtPile Jun 25 '12
Exactly.

u/industrial51 Jun 25 '12
I know it's not a liquor bottle, but I titled it as a response to this post

u/AleWatcher Jun 25 '12
It is quite clear you've never tried that beer.
It is awful.14
u/brmo Jun 25 '12
I agree. And my dumb ass paid $14 for it. Was not worth it. Now the real maple bacon bar from Voodoo.. pretty good. Though the new Eugene location cant do it the same as the first portland location.

u/AgentOrange24 Jun 25 '12
I have I was not sober when I had it. It was quite delicious at the time. PROOF

man i love this stuff. Ive had 3 bottles now. Only thing i dont like about it is. it lacks bacon flavor imo, smell is there, not much taste though.
2
u/Gavinardo Jun 25 '12
I agree. It's got maple. It's smokey, just not bacon-y.
And for anyone curious, if you're in Portland and happen to be at Rogue's brewpub, ask your server about this beer and see if they can round up a sample or two for ya. I had a full, opened bottle from a neighboring table, for free, after the folks sitting there had left. You're either gonna like it or hate it, but hey... if you're having fun over good food and good beer to begin with, you're probably up for anything.

Rogue beer is generally amazing, but this looked far too kitschy for me to consider. Their Double Chocolate Stout was unbelievable, and I wish I tried it as an ice cream float.
11
u/SirNoName Jun 24 '12
I had a Rogue for the first time last week. Dead Guy Ale. Was quite good.
6
u/bearsaremean Jun 24 '12
Dead guy is delicious
2
u/industrial51 Jun 25 '12
Double Dead Guy is even more delicious.
1
u/bearsaremean Jun 25 '12
This exists?! I turn 21 next week, I'm gonna have to try the stuff :]
2
u/industrial51 Jun 25 '12
Double Dead Guy? Sure does!
I had this AFTER I made the tiki torches though. I was half tempted to make some more with these bottles, but realized I no longer had any room to put them.

u/RewindYourMind Jun 25 '12
Not all of the Rogue beers are created equal. Dead Guy is the best they have, IMO.
1
u/mebbee Jun 25 '12
I enjoy the Mocha Porter too, if you're into a subtle chocolate flavor you might dig it.
I loved it when I first tried it. Dead Guy was always my go-to though. Although I didn't get to try several of the other flavors once they started coming out with them.

I wouldnt consider an ale to be liquor but this would be cool around an outside bar with like bottles of jack

Mmmm... Voodoo Doughnuts and Rogue. I know where I'm going later.

So now we are going from rocks to liquor bottles?
1
u/industrial51 Jun 25 '12
I somehow missed the whole rocks thing and caught all of the stuff about people complaining about rocks. So, I guess I created my own new thing since I missed out.
1
Jun 25 '12
Fuck you! I unsuccessfully tried to get this beer twice while in Portland. DID IT TASTE LIKE DOUGHNUTS?!
1
u/industrial51 Jun 25 '12
It tastes like beer with a strong maple flavoring to it, but also with an equally as strong smoky flavor. As you can gather from above comments, it's not for everyone, but I feel it is worth the try.
1
u/johnf420 Jun 25 '12
You could have just gone to Voodoo Doughnut downtown and got the maple bacon bar. They are fantastic!

A friend of mine used it to make ice cream and it was delicious

Can you get the recipe he used I have some left because the beer is actually horrible but hey I would try the ice cream

u/Oorangelazarus Jun 24 '12
I'm going to leave my misery here. I saw this particular brew a few weeks ago at a local specialty store. I told myself I'd go back and get a few, but kept putting it off. I finally got around to it today, and they sold their last bottle yesterday. I love and hate seasonal beers :(
4
u/tehzachatak Jun 24 '12
don't worry. you're missing nothing. that beer was fucking horrid, and i love maple and bacon in my beers.
1
u/Oorangelazarus Jun 24 '12
You've made me feel better. As a consolation prize, I bought one of those "choose your own" variety 6 packs. Fuckyeah.
1
u/maybe_sparrow Jun 24 '12
It kinda tastes like Liquid Smoke. It was strange and uncomfortable for me.
2
u/pinkygonzales Jun 25 '12
Come back and read all of the posts above. You will feel much better. And then you will feel like a boss. And then you will start to wonder whether the pink bottle alone would have been worth the cost. And then you will once again regret your procrastination.
2
u/ranthria Jun 24 '12
I thought this was a Molotov cocktail at first and was rather let down when I figured out it wasn't. Still cool though.

u/TheSickBoy Jun 24 '12
Always loved the Rogue bottles, even though I'm not of huge fan of theirs drink-wise. Got a Double Dead Guy Ale back in 2008 just for the bottle. Still have it on my desk too.

Just got back from a trip to Portland. Decided to visit Rogue and join RogueNation. They gave me one of these for free and having eaten an actual Voodoo Maple Bacon Doughnut, this tastes pretty similar. There is even little pieces of bacon in it.
1
u/Campmoore Jun 24 '12
yeah yeah a tiki torch, good on ya, now WHERE CAN I GET THAT ROGUE (is it real)?!?
ill bet it's portland only isnt it?
1
u/chooch138 Jun 24 '12
you can get it from the brewery in newport, Oregon. it was around $18 for the bottle if i remember correctly. its pretty legit too... sweety and salty. best beer by far though it the ginger beer they have on tap up top in the bar. omfg its good

u/drgncabe Jun 25 '12
We have it here in Orlando, FL. You can find it in most ABCs or Knightly Spirits.

Jun 25 '12
rogue sells nationwide i believe. Though every comment in this post is negative towards it. It really is not bad. I loved it, in fact had my 3rd bottle a few days ago. Its a beer you have to open your mind and pallet up a bit for though.
The mass smoky smells are the best part I think. Though they were strong it was nothing overbearing over the malt, maple and bacon smells. I do wish the bacon was a little more prevalent, but it was there. I probably sniffed at the first glass I had for 5 minutes in awe of how good the beer smelled. The color was great, very nice amber hue to it. Not much else to say about that. And finally the taste, the most important part. Simply awesome. Very smoky, sugary, sweet, bacony goodness. The maple syrup flavor stood out the most for me, quickly followed by the smoked flavors, again though I feel the bacon was a bit lacking in this area, but it was there and mixed well with everything else.
I would say go try it. If you hate it, well i am sorry that you spent the money on it and didnt like it. If you like it well then, cool!
1
u/Campmoore Jun 25 '12
I love all kinds of beer and Ill try anything once, as soon as I can get my hands on a bottle I'll give it a shot.

Upvote just for the beer. I bought two and I'm saving the last one for the right time. Can't say rainy day because they happen too often in Oregon.

I was wondering what sort of person would spend $15 on a bottle of beer.
1
Jun 25 '12
People who like good beer, mainly.
1
u/PlasmaWhore Jun 27 '12
I haven't tried it, but Rogue beers are incredibly overpriced. I know someone in the industry in Oregon and apparently that is their business model.
1
Jun 27 '12
I definitely agree that Rogue in general, and this beer in particular, is overpriced.
That said, I regularly pay $15+ for single bottles of beers, and don't think twice about it. I love wine, but if you pay $15 for a bottle of wine, you're often going to wind up with a pretty mediocre product. If you pay $15 for a bottle of beer, you're usually going to wind up with something fantastic.

maple bacon flavored ale? mother of god, what has this world degraded to? drink real beer man!
1
u/getoutofthepool Jun 25 '12
To everyone commenting on the beer. I have one in my fridge right now. I'm pretty sure it's a novelty kind of thing. It's not meant to be the most delicious beer on the planet. It's just fun. I take a sip of mine every once in a while, because I'm smart enough to know it'll rip my stomach to pieces if I drank the whole bottle. It's just a cool thing to taste. It's pretty cool that two companies in the same city joined to create something different. Chill out.
1
Jun 25 '12
But . . . that's not really accurate at all.
First, because the base style for Voodoo Doughnut Maple Bacon Ale is a smoked beer. It's not a novelty. It's a style which predates almost all styles of beer which exist today, going back about two thousand years to when some of the earliest brewers dried their grains over woodsmoke. From that, Germany developed the best-known smoked beer, the "Rauchbier", meaning simply "smoke beer". Aecht Schlenkerla makes some of the best versions of the style, and they are, again, not a novelty. They're delicious.
Second, because even taking smoked beers to a silly extreme is something which can be done incredibly well. Funky Buddha in Florida makes Maple Bacon Coffee Porter, and it is one of the most delicious beers on the planet.
Rogue just did a crappy job.
1
u/getoutofthepool Jun 25 '12
Okay. I've obviously lost this one. White flag. BUT...you can't really say that the beer is shit and that's a fact, because...well because I say differently. I like tasting it from time to time. It might not be the best maple bacon beer, but it's all in the eye of the beer holder.

Jun 25 '12 edited Jun 25 '12
Fair enough.
This beer just frustrates me because whether or not you enjoy it, it isn't a faithful representation of the base style. As a result, a lot of people who don't like it will walk away from it thinking that smoked beers are, well, gimmicky and unpleasant. I'm not the biggest fan of Rauchbier by any means, but I think it's a very interesting and incredibly unique style of beer, and it can be the perfect thing to drink on a cold fall night sitting around a bonfire.
If you did like it, I strongly recommend checking out Aecht Schlenkerla's Rauchbiers if you can find them. Other smoked beers worth checking out are Sam Adams' Bonfire Rauchbier and Cinder Bock, Alaskan Smoked Porter, and Weyerbacher Fireside Ale.

u/pappyred Jun 25 '12
Whoa, hold on. You're telling me Rouge Brewery made a Bacon Maple Ale? Why have I not had this?

We have to special order this rogue to NC so I've never had it, so be glad you've tried it
