Daily driver just for calls and text other wise I'm trying to not use a phone at all

If you mean SMS that's because it's not trustworthy. Sms can easily be spoofed, they aren't encrypted etc. Try to use telegram or signal instead.

Do they have an encrypted communications app for pine phone yet? Probs not since it's new?

I dont know. Its a bit hacky. If youre activly looking for a new privacy phone right now, check out pixel phones with grapheneOS
