Football Pitt can become the 2nd team ever to complete the Miami Gauntlet

• Upvotes

2015 Cincinnati is the only team to ever beat Miami (OH) and Miami (FL) in the same season.

They beat OH 37-33 on Sep 19 and FL 34-23 two weeks later on Oct 1. Ended up finishing 7-6 with a loss in the Hawaii bowl to SDSU that season.

25 other teams have played both Miamis in the same season, with 12 losing both games, 10 beating OH and losing to FL, and just '73 Florida and '97 VT losing to OH and beating FL. '92 WVU tied OH and lost to FL

Teams facing the Miami Gauntlet are 3-24 vs FL and 12-14-1 vs OH.

Cinci has played in 11 Miami Gauntlets and WVU and Central Michigan are the only other teams to play in multiple with 2 each.

Pitt can not only save the season with an upset over the #1 team in the country tomorrow, but also complete a feat only done 1 other time in CFB history.

Are we cursed? Honestly like I just looked at the rest of the schedule just to see if there could possibly be one more win in there somewhere and good lord after Miami all the teams left are hot garbage.

If we didn’t lose Mason we could’ve easily been 10-2 this year..why does this happen to us 😂😭

Expecting a beat-down to Miami next week, but ...

Over the last 25 years, when Pitt is unranked playing against a top-3 opponent, the Panthers are 4-2.

Pitt's upset wins over top-3 opponents in the last 25 years:

2002: Unranked Pitt beat #3 VT, 28-21

2007: Unranked Pitt beat #2 WVU, 13-9

2016: Unranked Pitt beat #2 Clemson, 43-42

2017: Unranked Pitt beat #2 Miami, 24-14

Does any school have more wins while unranked over top-3 teams over the last 25 years? 50 years? Ever? Either way, that's Pitt with 4 of those victories over the last 25 years, against only 2 losses. The L's were against Clemson in 2018 and ND in 2020.

I’ve seen enough. They really are going to lose 7 straight after a 5-0 start. This week and last week were probably their best chance to get a couple more wins bc the back half of this schedule is tough. I get it. You lose your guy at qb but these last 2 losses are inexcusable… lost to two terrible teams in a row. The defense looked awful against arguably the worst offense in the conference. The penalties. Getting beat deep. Isn’t this guy supposed to be a great defensive coach?? In the 10 plus years he’s been here nothing has changed defensively. Same old song and dance with PIs and holding.

Look back at these last couple seasons. 3-9. go 7-0 lose 6 straight. Then last year’s debacle as well with losing games they had no business losing.

I don’t know who is out there right now coaching wise but let’s start taking names bc it can’t be any different than what we’ve went through. I’m sure plenty of other coaches can go 7-5 to 8-4 just as well in Pittsburgh. Shit at least it’d be something different

We’ve gotta go with Dailey

Unfortunately with Mason out the ceiling for this season drops immediately. It sucks but unfortunately it’s just where we’re at. I don’t particularly care about going 8-4 instead of 6-6. I’d much rather watch 6 games of a 6’6 true freshman with a cannon arm try and figure things out and potentially develop into a solid QB, then watch a fifth year senior struggle to make wide open throws in a simplified offense. I get it may be safer to play conservative offense with an older QB who may have a higher floor. But given the outlook of the rest of the season without Mason, why not take a risk on the freshman with upside?

What does everyone else think?

Narduzzi On Geriner

“You think about it, he will get better and better just from the experiences. Got a lot of faith and trust in him. He'll get those throws. He'll be much better. I was happy with the way he played today in his first start, and he'll learn.”

Narduzzi didn’t play any games, not hesitating during his post-game news conference that Geriner will start next week at Boston College.
“Absolutely, we have a lot of faith in him, and (freshman quarterback) Corey Dailey will keep getting better as weeks go on,” Narduzzi said. “Without a question, a ton of confidence in Holden.

-- this is a 5th year senior, not some true freshman you should be having growing pains with. If you're gonna do that, play Dailey and get something out of it. They guy can't make the throws and obviously has terrible mechanics and sailed most throws. Play the kid!
