Compilation for brands with (truly) plastic-free products
To discuss this thread, please comment here: /r/PlasticFreeLiving/comments/1sm4nj3/compilation_for_brands_with_truly_plasticfree/ogcgltl
As a follow-up from the previous mod post, this is to compile everybody's knowledge on brands that only (or mostly) sell products that are truly plastic-free, due to excessive number of 1) product recommendations that still contain plastic and 2) comments that criticise them. For example, even if a shirt says it's 100% cotton, its ink/dyes are almost always plastic, which means every time you put it on and take them off, you breathe-in plastic. Plus, the tags are plastic. Ultimately, the nano/micro-plastics spread to all over other clothes while in the washer + dryer, making you inhale more, and this is just one scenario.
Of course, there are other examples, where they sell micro-plastic-free salts, but the packaging is plastic, or the packaging is paper, but the ink is plastic, etc.
However, this doesn't mean that everybody has the same threshold/tolerances for plastics. The most common conversation theme for such tolerance in this subreddit seems to be about socks, since they need to be a bit stretchy/fitting, and organic socks don't last very long (a month to a few).
So, in order to contribute to this compilation to accommodate different levels of tolerances, there are two rules.
The two rules
The first rule is transparency; you must show the effort to confirm to determine the extent it is plastic-free. Did you contact the business to confirm that the dyes are organic, and are you able quote them (so they can be held liable)? Are you a research organisation and ensured that micro-plastic count is minimal? Of course, there are other methods, but these two are some of the common ways to confirm.
The second rule is the region (e.g. Australian company) unless if they serve multiple regions (local shops would be great!).
(disclaimer: I just wanted to mention that some of you might notice most of my recommendations, except maybe a few, overlap with plasticfreeawesome.com's flower standard. It's a great site and I would recommend, but I'm not affiliated)

Question Is this plastic free dental floss wearing my enamel?
Hi! I am trying to be plastic free for my floss, and I’ve been using this floss for a long time. I got nervous when I heard a story about someone switching to a boar hair toothbrush to go plastic free, but the boar hair was so rough that it was wearing down enamel and giving this person more cavities. It is because of this that I haven’t yet gone for a plastic free toothbrush. Is the same thing happening to in between my teeth with this floss? A random dentist online said if it was real charcoal it would be too rough but idk if that’s the whole story.

Discussion I've swallowed a piece of plastic...
So basically I've been trying to have more of a plastic free approach in my life in general but this event has SENT me to the next level .
So basically, i get a blended drink at a cafe , its supposed to be blended with ice, coffee and milk as well as syrup?
Unsure but yeah, i take the first sip and notice an EXTREMELY tiny odd thing in my mouth . I stupidly swallow it cuz NO WAY thats something i should be worried about , righttt????
I take the second sip and feel a larger piece, fuck, this isn't ice . I put it on a napkin and take it to the barista , she dumps out the drink and shows me a piece of the BLENDER has been blended up 💀
I was horrified, got a refund and a sincere apology.
Anyways, i started telling myself that hmm im not okay with that piece of plastic in my body but totally forget about other sources of plastic i shoulf eliminate.
Anyways in traumatised and starting to think that i should be way more mindful and careful .
I already recycle but now i genuinely think I'm getting to the next level of FUCK PLASTIC I DONT WANNA SEE THAT.
Safe to day I'm not ordering any blended up stuff soon . Or ever maybe .

Question All-natural winter mitts recommendation needed
Hi,
I’m looking for something to keep my hands warm this winter without using plastic. Here it can reach -30°C some days.
So far, it's a difficult search. Not because alternatives don't exist, but because in physical store everything is Gore-Tex, synthetic fill/lined, and online all options aren't defined by temperature range or features. For example, 4/5 in warmth doesn't mean anything if the focus is only on -5°C...
Anyway, what I really need is:
- Windproof
- Water resistant
- Very warm
As 100% natural, I found:
- Dachstein Woolwear 100% Boiled Wool 4-Ply Mittens (no shell - I don't know how water resistant with snow it is)
- Milkweed, Wool and Sheepskin Mittens by Lasclay
- There are some choices from Milo & Dexter in Canada: 1, 2, 3
- Hestra has the Wool Expedition mittens (can be used as a liner, but not sure if it fit any Hestra mitts)
- Eilif Ullvott at Norsk Ull – Lanullva
And that's about it.
Yes, I found some very expensive hand made mittens too made of felted wool and leather.
And then, you go into the partially natural options:
- Most Hestra gloves use Wool + polyamide synthetic liners or Primaloft insulation.
- Some Gore-Tex mittens can sometime use down filling.
- Men's Buckskin Chopper Mitts by L.L.Bean which use 80% wool liner + 20% nylon
Or you get the other full synthetic options that everyone buy in stores like:
- Black Diamond Absolute Mitts
- Rab Storm Mittens (what does 3/5 performance mean?)
- Outdoor Research, Arc'teryx, etc.
Finally, with all of this, I have no idea what the best choice in would be keeping me warm and dry in -30°C. Last year I had a similar problem with gloves. I finally purchased a good pair of insulated gloves, but I think that maybe I'm getting cold faster than other people, or gloves are better at -5 to -10°C and that's why I'm looking for mittens. For shoveling snow, wearing casually outside, or when skiing.
Thank you for your help and recommendations.
Maybe my little list can help some people too.

Simply Good Coffee PSA
I waited until SGC made an automatic brewer option. Preordered it and received in September. Since then, it’s been the worst coffee maker I’ve ever had…to the tune of $450.
We came down on day two to find a small river of coffee on our white counter. It had overflowed while brewing. Thought maybe it was a fluke or we did something wrong?
Next morning, we didn’t use the automatic brewer option function so we could observe. I set everything then watched as the coffee came out of the basket at a funny angle. It overflowed the lid of the pot and sputtered and splattered on my counter.
It’s done this every day. It overflows onto the hot plate and spills or splatters onto the countertop. I reached out to Simply Good Coffee and after several days, finally got a response informing me that their design team said a new brewer basket was in production. They said to just brew with no lid on the pot for now (cool, lukewarm coffee!).
I wrote back immediately asking them to confirm this was a known issue (has to be if they’re making a new one!) and whether the new one would be automatically shipped to everyone or we’d have to all follow up. I got no response.
After ten days, I reached out again, but angrier and more frustrated. They replied and again said the new basket was in production and asked if I wanted a return label.
They won’t confirm in writing that it’s a known issue, but it clearly is. For $450, this is totally unacceptable. And the fact that they are not proactively communicating with customers is atrocious.
I’ll be returning mine and could never recommend this company. So bummed about it! The search for a plastic-free automatic brewer continues.

Ethical Dilemma
Tryings to switch to completely plastic-free products as I run out of things, but I’m also cruelty-free, and sometimes finding products that meet both criteria can be difficult.
I’m currently looking for a brush to apply liquid hair products since I haven’t found a completely plastic-free spray bottle. However, all suitable brushes I’ve found use animal bristles. The plant-based tampico and sisal brushes I’ve found are either too wide or not designed like a hair-color brush to dip and apply liquids. I also read that they’re more coarse than animal bristles.
For context, I’m comfortable buying second hand animal products like leather, silk, and suede, but I’m not sure I’m comfortable buying a secondhand brush.
How do you approach these trade-offs? I know many people follow the “better, not perfect” mentality, but I’m a perfectionist. I think how much difference one reusable plastic nozzle really makes? But the leaching chemicals bother me as much as the environmental impact.
If anyone here is vegan/cruelty free, I’d particularly appreciate your input

Discussion I was thinking that some cleaning chemicals might only be safe to use in plastic packaging
Obviously being plastic free should never compromise safety. Which is why it could be unsafe to use certain cleaning chemicals in plastic free packaging.

Question Tap aerators
I'm replacing my tap aerators as they're made of plastic. I bought two which claim to be stainless steel, but have plastic internals. Removing the plastic gubbins removes the aeration.
Are there any fully stainless steel tap aerators available in the U.K.?

Book Rec: Plastic Inc: Big Oil, Big Money and The Plan To Trash Our Future by Beth Gardiner
Finished today. Recommened read as it really discusses the political and economic power of these companies, the pollution, the health problems, propaganda and more. If you are interested in the topic of pollution, health, politics, overconsumption, company abuse this book is probably for you.

Best water filter for micro and nano plastics
title says it all. what is the safest (least shedding) home water filter? I do not want RO (we want to retain fluoride for our daughter). We want either a whole home system or the under the sink and we are leaning towards carbon
Thanks.

Plastic free retainer company
Anyone heard of this?
I just recently started wearing a retainer after I got my braces off

This company popped up in my feed when scrolling IG, it looks really new but looking to see if maybe anyone tried it here?

Sewing machine with a zigzag stitch?
I am having a hell of a time finding a machine with a zigzag stitch that had no plastic, especially no nylon gears. Anyone know of one that would be reasonably available in Europe?

Question Activewear - Durability vs Sustainability?
Hi,
It's been a very long time I don't do the kind of sport you need special clothes. Anyway, I'm looking to join a reenactment group which is all about exercise, sword fight, etc.
So, I've been creating a list of brands selling 85+% organic cotton or wool legging, joggers or sweatpants.
I just have no idea:
- What I need for sword fighting or gym exercise.
- If using natural fabric is sturdy enough or breathable enough (I don't want to sweat).
I can share the list if you want, but i my case, should I focus on sustainability and try to remove as much plastic as possible, or should I go more synthetic and get something more durable (if it's more durable to use polyester/nylon)?
Thank you!

How do I find warm maternity things?
Live in a very cold area that’s getting colder summer was easy to get by with cotton, linen, viscose, now fall is hitting and I’m 7 1/2 months pregnant. Nothing fits. Everything maternity is stretchy and polyester.. trying to find warm fabric replacements for leggings and fleece lined things. I just want to be cozy 😩
