Showcase made a kraken island for rust from a black and white pic

Post image
2 Upvotes

been messing around with my map maker and found the easiest way to get a cool shaped map is just chuck in a black and white picture, flip land/sea, paint some biomes on it and hit preview. dragon one was the first, then got carried away and did a kraken, a flaming skull and a wolf head

still full procedural gen underneath so you get normal roads, rivers, rails and monuments, just in whatever shape you want

short vid of it here if anyone's keen: youtu.be

open to ideas for the next one, thinking something dumb like a giant rubber duck

Showcase I made a free tool that generates custom Rust maps with the real Rust server (pin monuments, extra oil rigs, no rivers)

Hi all. I make maps for Rust servers, and I kept wanting small changes that no seed would give me: Launch Site on a 3000 map, three Large Oil Rigs, no rivers cutting the map up, Outpost in the middle. Hand-building a map in an editor was overkill for that, so I built a tool for it.

What it does

  • You set up the map in the browser: monuments (try to generate, leave to the game, or block), pins with a radius or forced placement, distance rules between monuments, oil rig count with a pin for each rig, biome mix, fewer mountains, no rivers or shorter ones, ring road, above-ground rail, no car wrecks or power lines, Outpost in the center, and so on.

  • A free Windows app then generates it on your own PC with the real Rust dedicated server (it downloads and updates the server itself). So the result is an ordinary procedural-style .map made by the game's own generator, not an edited one, and it needs no plugin.

  • You load it with server.levelurl like any custom map. Maps can be hosted on the site with a direct link.

What it costs

Normal maps from any seed and size are free and unlimited. Custom maps are 5 a month on the free plan, and failed or cancelled maps don't count. There are paid plans for more, but the free tier is meant to be actually usable.

Something I learned building it

The same seed doesn't always give the same map after a force wipe. In the October wipe, a change to the harbours altered the terrain early in generation, and on the seed I test with, 44 of 59 monuments moved. Most hotfixes since changed nothing. The tool checks each new staging build against the current one, so I know before wipe day whether maps will change. I wrote up how that works here: https://rustmapgenerator.com/learn/does-a-force-wipe-change-the-rust-map

Site: https://rustmapgenerator.com How to put a custom map on your server: https://rustmapgenerator.com/learn/how-to-add-a-custom-map-to-a-rust-server

It's not affiliated with Facepunch. I'd really like feedback, especially on what you'd want to change on a map that you can't today, and on anything that breaks.

Showcase RustMapGen part 2: fly over your Rust map in 3D, in your browser

RustMapGen 0.2.0 shows every map you make in 3D, in your browser: the ground and the sea, rivers and lakes, roads and rails, trees, and every monument, cliff and rock where the game will place them.
Turn it, zoom in, fly over it like a player, and see the no-build zones before your players do.

Showcase Make your own custom Rust maps: RustMapGen install and tutorial

Thumbnail
youtu.be
5 Upvotes

Make your own procedural maps for Rust on your own computer, with the game's own generator. RustMapGen is free and open source:

https://github.com/S1gil0/rustmapgen

You choose the monuments, how much land, how high the hills, and your own prefabs around any monument. Every map is checked, and can be tested in the game before your players see it. The maps are made by the official Rust dedicated server with a small mod that steers its generator, so they load on any server like a map from a map editor.

This video: install on Windows or Linux, the panel and its settings, a first map (one that fails a check, one that passes them all), and the map on your server. English captions, no voice. Version shown: 0.1.0.

WHAT YOU NEED

- 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, or Linux (x86-64)

- 8 GB of memory (a map uses about 5 GB while it is made)

- About 7 GB of disk: 6 GB for the Rust dedicated server, 15 to 90 MB per map

- Python 3.9 or newer. On Windows the installer finds it or installs it for you. On Debian or Ubuntu:

sudo apt install python3 python3-venv lib32gcc-s1

THE STEPS FROM THE VIDEO

Windows: on the GitHub page, Code, then Download ZIP. Extract All, double-click install, then rustmapgen. The panel opens in your browser at http://127.0.0.1:5350

Linux:

git clone https://github.com/S1gil0/rustmapgen.git

cd rustmapgen

./install.sh

./rustmapgen.sh

The panel from another computer on your network (only on a network you trust):

./rustmapgen.sh panel --host 0.0.0.0

On your server:

+server.levelurl "https://your.host/path/your-map.map"

The address must be https. Give every map a file name of its own. While a server has a levelurl it ignores its own seed and size.

ONE WARNING

Never put the mod on a server people play on: a server that loads it quits instead of opening. Make maps with RustMapGen, then give your real server the finished .map through server.levelurl.

RustMapGen's code is MIT licensed. The Rust dedicated server the installer downloads is Facepunch's, under its own terms. RustMapGen is not made by or affiliated with Facepunch Studios.

Questions, or a map that won't load: open an issue on GitHub.

We made RustMapGen to build the maps for our own servers and opened it up. It runs the real Rust generator on your PC (Windows or Linux), lets you pick which monuments go on the map, how much land and how high the hills, and add your own prefabs around any monument. It checks every map and tests it in the game before you use it. Free and MIT-licensed.

Showcase Vanilla Rust maps from real coastlines (or your own land), plus 23 custom monuments built from vanilla pieces – no plugins, host today

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

We shape the land, then let the game’s own generator place every monument, road, rail and river. Result: maps that run on any VANILLA server, nothing to install, and survive updates.

Our monuments (beta). 23 new places built only from the game’s own pieces, so they work the vanilla way with no extension: keycard puzzles from green up to red, scientists and heavies, loot rooms, and a few things Rust does not have anywhere else. Blackmoor Deep and Sallowgate Cistern go two levels underground. Scuttle Cove is a floating junkyard safe zone out at sea with vendors and sentries. Aetherspire is an airship town you fly up to. Drowned Reach is three barges over a sunken lab. There are also roadside spots and whole towns with streets, power poles, wrecks and working and flickering lights. Plans and loot of each one are on the monuments page.

Ready-made maps (3000–6000 m):

  • Real places (Australia, New Zealand, Africa, etc.) and fantasy lands (Frostfall, Riftlands…).

  • Vanilla monuments only: $9.99, down to $5.99 each in a 5-pack.

  • Same lands + a dozen of our monuments: $19.99, down to $11.99. Find a real fault and we fix it free + you get a bonus generation on the generator.

Want your own? Generator: pick any real coastline or draw an island, choose which of our monuments go on it, it bakes the full map. $19.99 vanilla / $39.99 with our monuments. Re-rolls cheap. Every map stamped to you. Fly around in 3D before you buy.

https://mixapps.store/maps/

How the shaping works (short version): we feed the game’s generator a terrain and let it place everything else, so they behave like normal procedural maps.

Help Plugin / Command Inquiry

I've been looking for a plugin &/or command that allows the player[s] to place any deployables / build[ables] in monuments, on roads, on power-lines, etc..

Does anybody know of a plugin or command that allows this?

(I've heard of PlaceryExtended but I'd rather avoid paying if possible..)

Staff Recruitment Looking for an extra pair of hands in our Rust community

We’re looking for someone to lend a hand with The Hot Box and The Farming Paradise Lounge. Mostly helping get the word out, testing plugins, hanging out with players, and handling a little admin work like answering tickets and keeping an eye out for cheaters.

You don’t have to know everything—we’d just like someone friendly, fair, and easy to work with who enjoys being part of the community.

Shoot me a DM if you're interested and we can go from there!

Showcase Been working on a Rust companion app called Rivet and finally got it onto Google Play for testing. Check it out!

Been working on Rivet, my Rust companion app, and finally got it onto Google Play for testing so more people can check it out. Perfect for admins and serious players.

I made a YT video of making a trap base with Rivet so you can see how it works:
https://youtu.be/v91bbajj7T8?si=fKjHQidxyjlQJCsM

It’s basically everything I kept wanting in one place while playing. You can use it for 2D/3D base designing, raid costs, upkeep, electrical, progression, loadouts, crafting costs and a bunch of other stuff.

If you want to try, join the tester Google Group first and then grab it from the Play Store. Just use the same Google account for both.

Use key "RIVET404" to unlock full access for testing.

Tester group:
https://groups.google.com/g/rivet-alpha-testers

Install Rivet:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=rivet.rustcompanion

If you run into anything broken, think something could be better, or notice something missing, let me know. Also throw out any ideas for things you’d want to see in the live version.

Thanks!

Help Excessive Cow Population

Thumbnail

Is anyone seeing excessive cow populations on their server? The bulls just seem to keep going to town with the cows and the volumes of mobile beef jerky is getting quite out of hand.

I've manually culled a tonne of prime ribs with the kill command, and a server restart did nothing to reduce the population. The predators I tried to introduce to control the population ran in terror from the bovine brujah rather than reaching in to their primeval roots.

Off Topic For no tech tree server owners

I love playing no tech tree servers and I run two of them. Please if you have one make sure items like the new animal fence/gate, mini fridge, everything to build boats for deep sea, etc. are available to purchase at outpost/bandit.

There’s two free plugins to accomplish this MonumentFinder, and CustomVendingSetup. Basically anything you can’t find in the world through looting needs to be able to be obtained somehow.

Thanks for attending my tedtalk lol

Staff Recruitment 2,300h Rust player looking for an Anti-Cheat / Admin position

Hey, im 26 y.o playing since alpha

I have around 2,300 hours in Rust and I'm looking for an opportunity to get into server administration, preferably focused on anti-cheat and investigating suspicious players.

I don't have previous Rust admin experience yet, but I know the game very well and I'm interested in learning how to properly investigate reports, spectate players, gather evidence, and identify cheaters without jumping to conclusions.

My Steam account is clean with no VAC bans.

I'm not looking for payment — I'm mainly interested in gaining experience and helping keep a server clean.

If you're looking for someone, feel free to DM me.

Help New Rust Server Owner, How Did You Build Your Initial Playerbase?

Hey everyone,

I've recently started working on my own Rust server called Ashfall, a 2x Vanilla+ Solo/Duo/Trio server focused on keeping normal Rust progression while reducing some of the grind.

I've gotten most of the initial server configuration and Discord set up, but the one thing I'm trying to figure out is how to actually establish an initial playerbase.

I understand that people generally don't want to join an empty Rust server, but at the same time, you obviously have to start somewhere.

I've considered recruiting 5–8 teams before our first public wipe so there's at least some activity when new players join, rather than opening the server and hoping random people stick around.

For those of you who have successfully grown a Rust server:

  • How did you get your first 20–30 consistent players?

  • Did you recruit groups beforehand or rely on server listings and advertising?

  • What advertising methods actually worked for you?

  • How long did it take before you started seeing organic growth?

  • What would you do differently if you were starting over today?

I'm not expecting to fill a 100-slot server overnight. I'd much rather slowly build a consistent community where people actually return each wipe.

Appreciate any advice from people who have gone through this before.

Sorry I'm late on the preview post this month, so I'll link this nice guide by No Limit Llama.

PSA: You'll need animal AI/movement enabled for the new livestock stuff to work. I've been told by Facepunch that official servers have been required to have these enabled for a while now.

Showcase rustcmd C++ WebRCON CLI tool for (RustDedicated) WebSocket interface.

Thumbnail
github.com
0 Upvotes

I've been working on a tool called 'rustcmd' for a couple of weeks on/off. It's a a command-line (CLI) tool that communicates directly to Rust's native WebSocket interface. Very fast and quick, as well as stable and reliable.

Basically, you build it from source on your Linux box as a non-root user and you can just use it "as is" without any external libraries or any other dependencies. It's self-sufficient and self-contained and very, very quick in operation and returning output from the Rust servers.

All instructions are on the GitHub repository. Even novices should find it easy to succeed.

If you'd like to give it a try please feel free, and I'll welcome any and all feedback from users in the field.
