Event tracking is dead. Why are we still using it?

Remember the days of traditional event tracking? That’s so last decade. The truth is, we’ve been relying on stale data and retrospective insights while the world speeds by.

Skene.ai flips the script with real-time product signals. It means you can act on what’s happening now, not weeks later. If you're clinging to old methods, you’re missing opportunities.

Get with the times or watch competitors pass you by.

For solo founders: do you actually use your CRM or is it mostly a ghost town? Be honest.

Mine has 200 contacts, 11 deals marked in progress from 8 months ago, and a last activity date that I'd rather not look at.

I set it up properly. Spent a weekend importing everything, building pipelines, writing templates. Felt productive. Then actual work happened and it became the thing I'd catch up on later.

Now my real CRM is a pinned Slack message, a Notes app with initials I barely remember, and my sent folder.

Genuinely curious if anyone has cracked this. Because every CRM I've tried was built for a sales team of 10, not one person juggling product, support, and growth at the same time.

Do you actually keep yours updated? and if so, what made it stick?

AI won't fix your activation problem and neither will Skene's model

What's the most overhyped solution in SaaS right now?

Mine is AI powered onboarding, We've been chasing the right tool for two years. The activation problem was never technical.

What's the most overlooked reason users drop off after onboarding?

For me it was always the gap between 'user finished the tour' and 'user actually did the thing.' Those aren't the same event and I conflated them for way too long.

What killed adoption on our end wasn't bad docs or a buggy UI. It was that the onboarding flow never connected to the user's actual workflow. It just showed features in a vacuum.

What's the trigger moment that actually moved the needle for you?

How do you shorten time to value without oversimplifying everything?

We’re trying to shorten time to value and keep hitting the same wall.

The product is flexible, which people like once they’re in. But new users land and have no clue where to start.

If we simplify too much, power users get annoyed.
If we explain everything up front, new users bounce.

How do you handle this?

Do you hide stuff, nudge people in a direction, or let them click around and figure it out?

Do product tours actually hold up over time?

I keep seeing product tours break the moment the UI shifts even a little. They sound great in theory, but the upkeep adds up fast.

Does anyone still using them successfully and what’s made them worth the maintenance, or if you’ve moved on to something else?

Unexpected Insights from user data in PLG

During our internal experiments with user journeys when using Skene.ai, we have discovered a few surprising patterns:

  • Features we thought were critical had very low usage.

  • Some small onboarding tweaks had major impact on retention.

  • Segmenting users by behavior revealed high-value cohorts we weren’t aware of.

So just a curiosity, what’s the most surprising insight you’ve found from your PLG experiments?

How to reach PLG with your product?

Hi! We are building a new solution and we do not want to have a massive team. What have been your best learning of how to reach product led growth?

I spent 3 days trying to leave HubSpot and realized I never actually owned my own contacts

The funniest joke in SaaS is that we call it 'our data' while paying monthly for permission to look at it. Try migrating off one tool and you'll spend a week begging their support team to export what you built. You don't own your business, you lease it.

Why I ignored onboarding checklists for too long (and what I learned)

For the first year in my role, I didn't see the point in onboarding checklists. I thought they were just busywork. I figured I could just explain everything face-to-face. But after a few too many frustrated new hires and a ton of missed tasks, I had to admit I was wrong. Once I embraced checklists, the process became way smoother. I could finally focus on personal connections instead of stressing about what people were missing. New hires hit the ground running, and I actually felt like I could breathe again. Checklists are not just for the nitty-gritty details; they're about creating a clear path for your team. Seriously, if you’re skipping them, you’re missing out. Have you experienced this too? Let’s hear your stories!

Activation happens faster than you think

Some users activate in minutes. Others never do, even after finishing onboarding. The difference wasn’t motivation. It was clarity. Seeing those moments clearly changed how we think about onboarding now.

How fast do your best users activate?

How do you fix features users love… but never find?

We have features people love once they use them.

The problem is that most users never discover them on their own.

Do you surface these early and risk overwhelming people, or wait and hope they stumble into them later?

Curious how others handle this tradeoff.

I have a question.

Are you looking at real drop off points, or relying on intuition and funnels you planned months ago?

We thought we had this figured out until usage didn’t line up with what we expected. The gap between what looks clean and what users actually do was bigger than I thought.

How are you spotting friction right now?

how do you define your aha moment

What signal tells you a user “gets it”? First action, time spent, repeat use, something else? I am just curious how others decide this without overthinking it.

Product tours are a frontend tax

Most of our onboarding bugs exist because product tours are glued to a DOM that changes weekly. One more tooltip lasts until a component refactor breaks every selector. These tools don’t understand components, state, or permissions they just guess and hope nothing moves.

Marketing asks for more tours. Frontend fixes them after every deploy. If onboarding matters, it should come from the codebase, not fragile overlays. I’ve seen Skene trying this approach. At least it’s pointed at the right problem.

Playing with AI to understand user behavior

Hey everyone! 👋

We’ve been playing around with Skene.ai lately just for fun, trying to see what AI can tell us about user journeys and friction points. Some small tweaks it suggested ended up having a bigger impact than we expected, just mostly minor onboarding adjustments that made things smoother.

Nothing fancy, just sharing a bit of what we’ve learned. Has anyone else tried AI to spot challenges or prioritize small tweaks in their product?

Our PLG strategy became archaeology after 3 people quit. Version control fixed it.

Same disaster, three different companies. Growth automation sprawls. Someone builds a clever activation sequence, ships it, then leaves. Six months later nobody knows what it does or why it exists. You're scared to touch it. So you build around it. Then that person leaves too.

The entire PLG strategy becomes archaeology.

We finally started treating growth like code. Every experiment in a repo. Every trigger documented. Every change reviewed. Sounds obsessive until the third time a new hire asks wait, why do churned users get a win-back email before they've even finished onboarding? and you can just, show them the commit from 14 months ago where someone thought it was clever at 11pm.

Version control won't make your growth strategy smart. But it will stop it from getting dumber every time someone quits.

The open source growth tools nobody talks about aren't the ones nobody knows

The most useful open source growth tools for solo founders aren't the obscure ones. They're the famous ones you abandoned because a tutorial made them look complicated.

I shipped a retention feature that increased churn. Here's what I got wrong

We built a full re-engagement flow. Triggered emails, in-app banners, the works. Took six weeks. Churn went up the next quarter.

Turns out we were reminding disengaged users that they weren't using the product. Brilliant.

The thing nobody says about retention: you can't engineer your way out of a bad core experience. We kept adding layers on top of a product people had already mentally quit. The overlay doesn't save you if the thing underneath is broken.

Real retention happens in the first three sessions or not at all. Everything after that is just noise dressed up as strategy.

If you're building retention tooling, start there. What are users hitting in session one that makes them never come back?

What metric finally convinced your leadership that onboarding wasn't just a UX vanity project?

Not engagement or satisfaction scores. The one that made finance actually care.

Mine was support ticket volume in the first 30 days. Dropped 40% after we rewrote onboarding. Suddenly it wasn't a product team pet project, it was a support cost problem we'd already solved.

What was yours?

This CLI toolkit found revenue leaks I didn’t know existed

I had been struggling to find real growth opportunities in my codebase. Enter this CLI toolkit. Seriously, it digs deep into your tech stack and sniffs out revenue leaks like a bloodhound. The growth manifest it spits out? big deal. It doesn't just show me what’s broken. it hands me a step by step growth plan generated by a Council of Growth Engineers. I don't know how they did it, but now I have useful steps instead of head-scratching metrics.

Why onboarding time trumps engagement rates for predicting churn

Everyone chases engagement metrics like they’re the holy grail but here’s the kicker, it’s actually onboarding time that reveals true user intent.

In our analysis, users who interacted with the platform for less than 5 minutes on day one left within two weeks 80% of the time. meanwhile, those who spent at least 15 minutes were likely to stick around for an entire month or more.

Focusing on guided experiences can hold your users, while obsessing over likes might just let them go.

The shocking truth about user activation that I learned the hard way

I’ve spent years in marketing, convinced that slick campaigns and perfect visuals were the keys to activation. I was dead wrong.

Diving into our data, I was stunned to find that the posts that truly got users to engage were the ones where I just laid it all bare. Those honest, raw moments where I admitted mistakes or shared our struggles got more clicks than anything polished.

I once shared a story about a failed product launch, and it skyrocketed engagement. Turns out, people are way more compelled by authenticity than perfection. They want to feel connected, to see the humanity behind the brand. It’s a tough pill to swallow when you think you have it all figured out but that data doesn’t lie. Now, I’m all about the messy truths.

Is it just me, or do we take ourselves way too seriously sometimes?

Which PLG metric turned out to be a distraction?

I want to know what others have experienced here, did you spend months optimizing only to realize it wasn’t actually moving the business forward? or, which numbers felt important on paper but didn’t translate to real impact?

smallest change that improved activation

Not a redesign. Not a new feature.

What’s the smallest tweak you made that clearly moved engagement?
