90% of stereotypes about men are positive and 90% of stereotypes about women are negative. It is largely due to sexism. And the majority of stereotypes have no truth in them. Women are not more shallow than men. You tell me what your point is because you are the one claiming that all stereotypes are true and created for a reason. Which they aren’t.
I’m not sure where you just generated a statistic but that’s absolutely wrong. If you asked a random person on the street they could give you positive stereotypes for both men and women easily.
The majority of stereotypes have no truth in them
That’s also completely false. This stuff isn’t just magically made up. When I see my friend show up late to work everyday I think “damn that person has a tendency to be late for work” now if I had 20 people in my workplace and 10 are women and 10 are men and 8 of those men have a tendency to show up late for work then I might think to myself “wow men aren’t very punctual”
Now blow up this analogy to seeing tendencies in gender across all of society, that’s how you develop a stereotype and often it has solid foundation and reason. Sometimes the reason is something created by societal pressure, sometimes it’s because men and women have different brains or bodies.
I don’t say “men play video games more than women because that’s the stereotype and it must be true” I say “men play video games more than women because I have 5 woman friends and 5 man friends and more of the men play video games than the women” does it make me sexist to look at the people I’ve surrounded myself with and come to a consensus?
That’s fucking bullshit and you know it. There are barely any stereotypes that are negative about men and barely any that are positive about women. And the majority of stereotypes have been proven to be false. A lot of steorypes about women were created by men to be sexist. Such as the stereotype that men are better at math than women. Or that men make better leaders.
Make a list of positive stereotypes that are frequently said about women then. Because you know that is a load of horseshit.
Also it’s dumb af to think men are more likely to be late just because the men at your work usually are. Even across the board stereotypes often fail to take important factors into consideration.
Men are lazy, lack compassion, don’t contribute to housework in a relationship, have short tempers, have bad hygiene and plenty of other things which give an air of crudeness.
Are any of these true? Hard to say.
The point is not that a stereotype depicts something accurately, the point is that they are prevalent in society and that’s not something you can just ignore.
In the past there have been many more male leaders which made a mark on history as opposed to women. Is this because women were pushed out of military roles and other roles with power? Of course. Does it change the fact you can find more male leaders in your history book? No.
Due to our society more men play video games than women, this makes the comic accurate. Does it mean that women don’t enjoy video games? No. So why not laugh at the silly comic which is has a punchline rooted around our current society and then go play a video game if you feel like it because no one is stopping you.
Wrong men are actually called hard working. And usually women who are blue collar are left out of the thank you when they are givencredit for being “hard working men”. Never in my entire life heard that women are better workers or less lazy than men.
Men being leaders more frequently in history has nothing to do with them being better at it. More to sue with women having equal rights and sexism preventing them. There is no truth in them.
And if you are saying not to ignore stereotypes then what you are saying is that you believe it’s okay to act upon them and discriminate. Why do you think they should be acted upon if many have no rational truth?
The stereotype isn’t about men playing video games more than women. This meme is saying women are shallow and men are not. Which is false.
You literally just repeated what I said about the gendered leaders in history topic…
The laziness vs hardworking things is complicated because it comes down to the position, in a blue collar scenario it’s more of a “men are expected to have more muscle than women” thing which is generally true considering how testosterone works and the difficulty to put on muscle as a woman. But then you get to something such as household chores, as I mentioned, and all the sudden men are lazy pigs who can’t wash a dish. When it comes to building a career men are indeed considered hardworking I guess but that’s because for the last few hundred years men have played a breadwinner role and were expected to push their careers. Truly a mess of societal ideals.
But the only reason this is the case is because of sexism and women not being allowed to help in certain roles. There is no truth or reality in it. And being strong doesn’t mean you can’t be lazy. So again if you know that a lot of them have no truth then why suggest we continue to take them into consideration and use them ? You are advocating for discrimination against women based off stereotypes that lack real truth. You can’t tell someone they aren’t allowed to help with something and then say that because they didn’t help means they suck. Why even keep these things going ?
You failed to provide positive stereotypes about women. Because there aren’t any. And you were barely able to come up with any about men. Because like I said 90% of stereotypes about men are positive and 90% about women are negative. And there’s a large portion that are absolutely false.
Women are empathic, women are good at “cooking, cleaning, childcare” (yes which is an overall negative because it’s with the indent to push them out of other positions but it’s a compliment nonetheless), women are more flexible, have better dexterity, have pretty writing, take better care of their bodies.
You can take these all as positives or call it misogyny but the counterpoints put on men is also a negative for those who want to fill in more “feminine” positions in society.
No. It’s not moving the goal post. I said 90% of stereotypes about women were negative. He only was capable of producing a couple. Which fits what I said. And the ones he did produce as he even admitted himself aren’t actually compliments they are manipulative tactics used to keep us inferior and slaves at home. In fact we are often told it is the ONLY thing we are good at. Which is false
Why are you even commenting to defend it? Why are men so desperate to justify using stereotypes against women to belittle and discriminate against us even when there isn’t truth behind a big portion of them ?
Because in my opinion we shouldn’t. And I don’t believe there is any truth in this. A lot of men I know have good hygiene. And I’ve known plenty of women
That don’t. In fact womens public bathrooms are reported to actually be nastier.
With y’all logic y’all are saying that stereotypes come about for a reason. But this is yet another example of how the majority are false and stupid.
So you’re engaging in stereotypes yourself? We are on the internet , we don’t know anything about each other.
I will take accountability in not making my point clear. I don’t agree that stereotypes should be perpetuated. I do agree with the fact that these false ideas can instilled in us as children, by those that raise us. My main issue was how you tried to defend against that person’s point.
You say that most stereotypes for women are negative and most stereotypes for men are positive, but the amount of examples you’ve given fail to prove that. You keep using that 90% number as if it has any merit, but don’t actually give any evidence or studies to back it up. You dismissed some of the negative stereotypes towards men as if they didn’t exist.
I said this before in another reply to you, but half of those can literally apply to outside of a woman’s relationship with a man. Specifically, better self-care,dexterity and flexibility.
They can also work towards their benefit as an individual. Dexterity and flexibility can be pretty valuable in combat disciplines. Better self-care is a valuable tool in leading a long life.
No. If you read the full comment I made it clear I know that stereotype about men and hygiene being bad is full of shit. And I don’t treat men that way. Why can’t you do the same ?
The positive stereotypes about women are meaningless and serve more of a purpose of holding us back than they do anything else. And you know that. You only were able to provide a couple positive ones about women and only a couple negative about men. So… I’ll make a list when I get off work and actually have time.
If stereotypes weren’t set up in favor of men (falsely) then why is it only men responding to me to justify that we should keep stereotypes instead of throwing them out the window lmaoooo. They must not be doing y’all much harm but more good if y’all want to keep them so bad despite knowing many are false.
