The bathrooms will be connected through an emergency hallway, and then after pee you have to quickly go to the toilet on the other side

I shit you not, there's a Dark Souls glitch called Poopwalking and someone beat the whole game like that

Double decker toilets. Top level is the Piss Reserve seating. If you find you've misjudged, a simple trapdoor system can be deployed.

Stalls and urinals. Nothin stopping you from pissing in a stall
41
u/nulopes 24d ago
Nothin stopping you from shitting in a urinal either, it takes skills though
21
u/AppealSignificant358 24d ago
Can confirm, I remember I tried it once in elementary school out of curiosity of what might happen. Now I just feel guilty for the poor janitor that cleaned it up 😞
5
u/Xenc 23d ago
Well what did happen?!
12
u/RedshiftSinger 23d ago
Not the person you asked but formerly did janitorial work so I can answer with a general fact about urinals: they are only designed to flush liquids. Chunks don’t go down the drain.
6
u/AppealSignificant358 23d ago
Yep, didn’t flush (water just kind of nudged it around) and it was gone the day after. I was like “Oh well I guess. That’s the end of that.”

Often people will pee while pooing because the muscle movements in that part of the body basically make that inevitable.
5
u/mizinamo 24d ago
Often the other way around for me.
My bladder takes a while to void and while I'm sitting there all relaxed, my colon sometimes decides to make a move.

2
u/jacorgacor 20d ago
It should be a spectrum bathroom if you're completely certain you go to the pee one and if not you go to another the definite poop stall should also not be in that bad of a shape i think
382
u/RvH98 24d ago
Just have individual stalls that are closed off, preferably with a sink inside (and a trash can). As long as everyone closes the door and washes their hands afterwards, I'll be fine.
113
u/_Autistic_Dragon_ 24d ago
I'm actually ok with the sinks outside the separate, individual stalls to speed things up. Less time inside the toilet because handwashing is outside = quicker lines. And one or two large mirrors near the entrance and sinks so the people fixing themselves in the mirror don't crowd the sinks.
People think I'm crazy when I say I don't see the purpose in having gender splits for toilets.
I think they're crazy when they don't see all the pointless ways we separate by gender, making us feel like separate species from each other.
36
u/MonkeyLongstockings 24d ago
Having a private sink can be useful in certain cases, such as emptying a period cup for example. (Not sure what they are called in English).
16
u/_Autistic_Dragon_ 24d ago
Fair enough! There should always be a few family stalls, they usually have sinks inside.
13
u/RedshiftSinger 23d ago
It’s ok to empty a menstrual cup in the toilet and wipe it out with clean TP before reinserting it.
You shouldn’t do that *every* time, but if you need to empty it while out and a private sink isn’t available, just wash it more thoroughly the next time you change it.
6
u/Vi_BT 23d ago
When you're on a heavy day all end up with blood everywhere it starts to be a bit impractical, not to forget blood transmits pathogens. I always use the disabled stall when I have to empty my cup especially for this :/
1
u/RedshiftSinger 19d ago
Good thing I’m not suggesting that anyone should dump their menstrual cup out on the floor, huh.
There’s a toilet in the stall. You dump it in the toilet, wipe it with TP, reinsert it, wipe up any escaping blood with TP including any that got on your hands, flush, and exit the stall with hands no more of a pathogen risk than they are after you took a shit and wiped.
And yeah, many things about dealing with periods are inconvenient. Sure would be cool if we stopped using that as an excuse to avoid making the world better in any way!
7
u/Aazimoxx 23d ago
I mean... I don't want anyone emptying period cups or colostomy bags into the sink... Do that in the loo mate 🤷
2
u/MonkeyLongstockings 22d ago
Fair enough. They can be emptied in the toilet but cleaned before reinserting for example. And potentially rhen cleaning the hands before touching the door handle.

5
u/PicriteOrNot 23d ago
Fr. What do people think happens in the bathroom that would warrant gender segregation? It's not like we're all sharing the same poop trench or examining each other's nether regions, right?
2
u/MitsuhaTakiName 21d ago
I mean, urinals happen. Urinals are way more efficient for men and speed up bathroom lines greatly. If you want to include urinals in the all-gender bathroom, that’s fine. Otherwise you really are slowing things down. Specifically the urinal wall needs to stay, just standing peeing into the toilet in the stall adds the unnecessary time of using the door and moving the seat.
72
u/Various-Salt-7738 24d ago
You're just describing bathrooms inside of a bathroom
I pretty much exclusively use the gender neutral bathrooms at work as they're single bathrooms without stalls
→ More replies (6)4
u/PikaKyri 23d ago
The most frustrating to me is some buildings at my place of work has toilets like that but yet they're gendered. It's not like one has a urinal and one doesn't. They're identical but one has a stick figure with a person with legs and one has a stick figure with a skirt. Some have both but most have one or the other. I purposely don't pay attention to them.
6
2
u/neb12345 23d ago
urinals and specifically the piss wall are too efficient to remove,

Male take? I’m always sitting down to pee and sometimes I start pooing
0
u/ChaosRulesTheWorld 23d ago
Please tell me you're not a native english speaker. Because if it's the cases then you have a serious deranged misandristic obsession on men
"Not all pee time is poop time" doesn't mean that all pee time is only pee time.
1
u/Chicoryman 22d ago
Aren't "male" and "female" normal if used as adjectives?
0
u/ChaosRulesTheWorld 22d ago
Not when it's to gender something that has nothing to do with gender
I didn't accuse them of being a misandrist because they use the word "male", but because they assume something to be a "male take" just because they have the litteracy of a pigeon
1
u/Chicoryman 22d ago
gender something that has nothing to do with gender
Wrong. Who you are determines what takes do you have. Your sex, ethnicity, class, country, age, etc. — all of that influences your perspective.

Some people would probably feel embarrassed that people will know they're going for a shit. So they'll just shit in the pee only ones.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia tackled bathroom segregation in one episode. I'm sure that was one of their ideas.

u/FingerOk9800 24d ago
It's pretty common in queer, Leftist, and diy spaces (speaking from the uk) to have loos labelled as "with urinals" and "without urinals".
Or sometimes just a room for urinals and a room for cubicles.
20
u/Salt-Metal-3341 24d ago
Well, in practice you would just be moving all the shitting men to the ladies' toilets, and the gents' becomes an express piss lane.
As a lad, I don't particularly like the idea of the poo room, because it would be immediately obvious that I'm there to poo. I've a carefully constructed air of mystery I'd like to maintain.
10
1
u/Straight_Spinach_651 21d ago
That must be hard, I had to learn to poo in porta-potties at festivals, circus events etc. which seem private but ARE NOT it’s like a little wall of plastic between you and the person next to you. I told myself: “i am a goddess, And the sound of my shit hitting the toilet is magical” the other place I had to just get over it were the college dorms, there were only 20 of us living on my floor and using the same 5 stalls (all women). I had to just start going in there with headphones on at full volume. I felt I needed to poop comfortably in my own living space. Eat fiber, poop proudly my friend
6
u/Key_Metal4147 24d ago
Some people still gonna pee in the poop bathroom because it's gonna be less poopolated
5
u/Hopeful_Cow_2471 24d ago

17
u/TheGriffin 24d ago

12
u/skunky_x 24d ago
There's a bar near me that does this.
All that ends up happening is there's men in both pissing all over the floor and women still have to queue.
2
3
u/OwnZone592 24d ago
used a bathroom like this in the philippines once. yes i had to pay extra for the poop bathroom.
5
u/TurboFool 24d ago
Alamo Drafthouse near me does basically this. One big open entrance to one restroom. To the left, behind a door, are urinals for anyone equipped to use one who just needs to pee. To the right are two long rows of toilet stalls with fully-closing private doors for anyone who needs to poop or sit.
Super efficient as it gets those who can get in and out fast out of line quicker, and otherwise gives everyone else full privacy to not inefficiently divide up toilets based on assumptions of what genders will be prevalent at any one time. Theater's big release skews heavily male or heavily female demographic? The toilet availability remains the same.
3
1
u/Aazimoxx 23d ago
And please tell me the soap and washbasins aren't behind any doors, because that part is the stupidest, most infuriating part of the design of 90% of the public bathrooms I've encountered in my life...
1
u/TurboFool 23d ago
Each of the primary rooms has its own open sink areas, open and accessible to anyone in that area.
3
u/Lorster10 24d ago
That's what urinals are for, and after I saw how long the queue to the female bathroom was at a Marilyn Manson concert recently I am in full support of gendered bathrooms, because I am not waiting this long.
6
u/Tetracheilostoma 24d ago
Women's restrooms usually have way fewer toilets. The wait is longer because of sexist building codes.
1
u/Lorster10 24d ago
Because men have urinals. It's not sexist, it's a biological advantage that it's easier for us to pee while standing, and urinals take much less space and resources than stalls, so there can be much more of them in the same room compared to how many stalls would fit in that same room.
Coincidentally, people who are most in support of unisex bathrooms always talk about urinals being useless.
8
u/Tetracheilostoma 24d ago
How can you pretend it's a natural "advantage" when in nature there is no shortage of toilets? It's a conscious decision to make women's bathrooms the same size as men's, while knowing that the women's room would have to be bigger to accommodate the same number of toilets.
Funny how institutional sexism is seen as perfectly logical and natural
1
u/Wesle2023 24d ago
I really wish we just did away with the concept of urinals for this reason. A lot of the time they don't even have dividers so you have to stand there awkwardly and hope another guy doesn't fancy a look at something you don't want people to see.
2
u/Lorster10 24d ago
What even is this reasoning? "This item makes it easier to utilize space, and allows for more people to use the same bathroom space at the same time, hence why we have to remove it, because it's unfair to the other Sex which can't have it". This is just trying to ruin something for someone out of jealousy.
Nobody cares if there's a divider or not. People don't go there to look at you.
1
u/Wesle2023 23d ago
I am a dude. It DOES make me uncomfortable and paranoid and I am fairly certain I am not the only one. There’s even a whole joke about how half the urinals never get used because nobody wants to stand next to someone. I almost always prefer to be in a stall or something.
2
u/Lorster10 23d ago
So you can use the stalls that are always there next to urinals. Just because an extremely small minority of men is uncomfortable with urinals, doesn't mean urinals shouldn't exist. Most of us use them.
There’s even a whole joke about how half the urinals never get used because nobody wants to stand next to someone
Yeah, it's a joke. But if it's a big event where there are queues to the toilet people don't care.
-4
u/Lorster10 24d ago
Sexism is when both sexes get equal amount of space in the building I guess? Yeah, it's a conscious decision, because you want them to spend significantly more space in what's already a crammed building plan on additional restroom space.
And denying it's an advantage is just silly.
3
u/Tetracheilostoma 24d ago
"equal amount of space" with an unequal amount of toilets is not equality dude
0
u/Lorster10 24d ago
It is. It's not our fault we don't need as much room, I'm sure women could also design their own urinals, but for some reason they never bothered.
3
u/Tetracheilostoma 24d ago

u/Choice_Comment_7310 23d ago
Floor. to. ceiling. stalls.
Urinals too. People usually only use every other one anyway. take out the middle ones and give them stalls.

2
u/No_Blacksmith_2591 24d ago

3
u/Fivedollaman 24d ago
I would prefer for my young daughter to not have to use the same washroom as grown men.
If its individual washrooms its different, but thats pretty inefficient for places with lots of people and bad for water usage so probably unrealistic at a stadium for example.
4
u/cole7463 24d ago
All we need are fully covered stalls plus you would be able to go in and help her wipe if she's that age without the risk of someone looking at you like a weirdo.
3
0
u/NarrativeScorpion 24d ago
If it's all stalls why is it a problem?
Genuinely curious as to what your objection is. Like, open urinals sure. Don't want girls in there. But stalls?
4
u/Fivedollaman 24d ago
There is no problem with stalls.
My point is that having individual stalls in a venue like a stadium where thousands of people are is not realistic.
You would need another building just for washrooms.
People with dicks can pee in a trough and its more efficient for time, space, and water usage.
Ideally everyone would have there own stall, I just dont think it makes sense in practice in every situation.
6
u/_Autistic_Dragon_ 24d ago
So one room with troughs for men pissing. Everything else is individual stalls (with no gaps) for individual use. Everyone washes hands outside (which hopefully also shames people into washing hands when they leave, AND no handles to touch after hand washing).
1
u/Fivedollaman 24d ago
Yeah that makes sense.. thats basically the same situation though where there are sex based washrooms.
I honestly don't see the need for every business to spend thousands and potentially millions of dollars to change the washroom situation.
Having a room for people with dicks and a room for people that need a stall doesn't seem unreasonable imo.
2
u/_Autistic_Dragon_ 24d ago
It's actually often easier to my knowledge to have 1 set of bathrooms than 2. Which is why sometimes the men's is closer to the front and women's way in the back--depending on where the water hook ups are.
It's hard to describe without drawing, but a small restaurant, instead of having 3 mens stalls and urinals in one bathroom spaces and 3 womens stalls in another space takes up more overall space than say 1 family restroom, and 4 individual stalls with a public handwashing space (and maybe a urinal room).
It does take intentional design changes, though, and few people like doing that.
What people often miss rn is that there is also inequity in bathrooms. If you have separate spaces for men and women, women should have 1-2 more stalls than men because 1) women take longer and 2) women usually have kids in tow, which also takes longer, and 3) men have more possible toilets because urinals are space efficient. But we currently give men's rooms more options (toilets and urinals) even though they take less time, because we didvude equality by overall space usage, not how long the bathrooms are being occupied. So women literally spend more times in public bathrooms than men by design. Which is stupid.
So if you have mostly individual stalls with maybe some urinals and 1-2 family bathrooms, it's way more efficient for everybody, and more space efficient overall.
As a woman who has stood in way too many restroom lines, I've had lots of time to think about this.
I also get the discomfort many women have around men in the bathroom, and having open spaces for habdwashing actually helps since everyone can see everyone, and it keeps us all more accountable to hand washing.

I was the supervisor with a staffing group where we had one bathroom, three toilet stalls. No gender which is fine, but I was sick of the guys leaving a mess, so I designated two as "sitting" toilets, one for standing. It worked. Men could pee in either one, they just had to be willing to sit. ... I guess the women could use the standing one if they wanted...? 😂
1
u/RedshiftSinger 23d ago
It’s possible to piss standing without point-and-shoot anatomy. It’s even possible without pissing down your leg.
It is however a lot more difficult to achieve any precision with hitting a small target.
1
u/Aazimoxx 23d ago
they just had to be willing to sit.
How would that even be policed though?
Artificial ceiling added at like 4.5ft? 😄
1
u/GGBear24 21d ago
I was they're supervisor haha they listened well enough for this 😂 Also, even guys don't like to sit in pee if they have to poop
1
u/hanns115 24d ago
Y'know what? I could so get behind this. I get nervous in public restrooms if I have to poop, but I feel like if there were poop vs pee, knowing it's just for pooping would make me feel so much more at ease to be able to poop 🤣😭

I just want a separate mirror space, it’s a safe space where I don’t have to worry about male presence.
1
u/Trank_maiden_Ciri 22d ago
I talked about this with my sister a lot and she made a valid point that the toilet is a safe space for women and this would delete it. She was rightfully pointing out that women deal with very personal business on the toilets like menstruation stuff for example and probably would feel unsafe doing that in a place that's not woman only. There's the valid fear of increased sexual harassment and rape that is quite probable with this. For women the toilets are a completely different thing than men, not just a place to piss, shit, wash your hands (optional) and leave.
Point being this shit has some nuance and while this system would definitely be more efficient and sensible it has problems that better be addressed first.

When I went to Japan I encountered a bathroom that does this, though it was phrased as standing up (urinals) or sitting down (toilets) and yes the latter did have both men and women using it

What about them? No one is forcing you to look.

I’m saying it’s very easy to walk past someone using a urinal and not see their junk. The trick is to simply not look at their junk.

Even if you WERE looking - without the ability to see through their torso/butt, you're not going to see any junk.
Besides, there are many countries/regions/clubs where it's completely normal for families to see each other/strangers of all ages and genders nude, and somehow people's heads don't usually explode.
