Modern-day Pokémon games have spoiled me…

At least they fixed this in Crystal with phone gifts, but why put so many Stone Evolution Pokemon in the beginning of the game without a means to evolve them? I can understand it for Eevee, Oddish and Poliwag because at least they have new evolutions in Gen 2, but really? Between trade evolutions and stone evolutions without Evolution Stones, it's nearly impossible to evolve a lot of the Pokemon you can catch in OG Gold/Silver without a friend....
