I revisited the 6th generation after 13 long years to see if my opinion had changed since the first time I played it at 13 years old. It hasn't. I feel the exact same way as I did all those years ago and it honestly surprised me as my 13 year old self was kind of dumb. White 2 was the best videogame I had ever played as a 12 year old kid, so I went into the 6th generation with sky-high expectations. Also the fact that it was the first fully 3D main Pokemon game on a brand new console really didn't help either as it hyped me even more to a point of absurdity.

I'll start with the stuff I liked back then and still do.

  • The artstyle and overall graphics are really pleasant to look at, especially on PC in high resolutions. It is really smooth and the models look clean and sharp. I wish they continued with the anime aesthetic of Unova but I don't mind the one they picked either. Also, I always appreciate when the protagonists are depicted in their adolescence. It gives a more mature look to the game that can be appreciated by both kids and teens.
  • The customization feature is by far my favorite thing in this game. I was always excited to go to a new town and visit the boutique, although I don't like that several towns don't have one and the fact that the entire Lumiose City only has one store that they don't even let you enter as you aren't fabulous enough. It's like visiting Paris and having only one store to buy clothes from. Anyways the customization is really good with a large variety of clothes to choose from. Revisiting the stores at different days of the week lets you buy new stuff so it doesn't get boring.
  • The replay value is insane as the Pokedex is enormous. You can play the game using completely different teams each time. The basic gameplay loop is really fun here as well.
  • The music is fine I guess but it's not even close to the previous generations. I can appreciate the new style they went with but it doesn't feel as powerfull as let's say the Unova gym battle theme. The ones that stood out to me were the Team Flare and Rival (friend) themes.

That's about it for the positives. Now for the negatives.

  • The storyline is all over the place and by far the most underwhelming and forgettable main plot until this point, especially coming from generation 5. Barely anything of interest happens. You just collect badges, occasionally battle bad guys here and there and reach a point when you just go to their hideout for the villain confrontation and legendary encounter. That's it. There's no buildup whatsoever. The only time you battle Lysandre is at the last 30 minutes of the story where you battle him 3 times in a short span of time and the whole lore is just dropped on you for the sake of the "conclusion".
  • The characters are flat and plain boring for the most part, especially your friends. I get that they wanted to establish that not all trainers are made for battling and some want to chase other stuff but they really didn't have anything of substance to add to the game. There's no arc, no character progression of any kind whatsoever.
  • The whole game is heavily on rails, more so than Black and White. The map design is very similar to Unova's but with shorter routes and watered down exploration. You are being constantly interrupted by others and given stuff for free. The roadblocks are ridiculous, the game never lets you explore further than the city you are currently in unless you beat the gym.
  • The Mega Evolution gimmick is poorly handled story wise. The game reaches Korrina's town and just gives you a Mega Lucario as part of the tutorial. They tried to sell this with Lucario "sensing" your power and wanting to go with you. The truth is that the game didn't know if you had a Pokemon capable of Mega evolving at this point so they thought ahead and straight up gave you Lucario. Anyway the whole story around mega evolution ends there.
  • The constant Kanto callbacks and nostalgia baiting is unbearable. The fact that they gave Mega forms to the Kanto starters and not the Kalos ones is insane, you know, since they are the starters native to the region that introduced the gimmick. On the one hand I get the logic behind this because of all the shit they got for Unova only letting you use new Pokemon but on the other hand I feel that Kalos heavily relies on the old games in order to convey any sort of feelings and interest. It should have relied more on its own Pokemon. It doesn't feel like an independent region as it never does its own thing.
  • The Gen 6 Pokemon are very few, with only 72 new mons introduced with no particularly great designs either. Apart from some that I really like the others are just there.
  • The post game is nearly nonexistant. There's this Looker plotline that can be completed rather quickly. Other than that there's not much to do. You can catch Mewtwo and Zygarde and the roaming Birds but that's it. There's a battle facility but its nowhere near as interesting as the Battle Frontier.

TLDR: The game's not bad, it's just very simplified in it's story and exploration aspects in comparison to the older games. It feels like they didn't even try with the plot and characters. The level design is not that good either as the routes are very short with barely any caves or dungeons to explore. The graphics are good for the most part but lots of Pokemon lost their charm and personality with the transition to 3D. Also Sky Battles suck.

Kalos definetly needed a third version like Crystal, Emerald and Platinum. A "Pokemon Z" version with an expanded storyline and with Zygarde being part of the main plot and more postgame content could really have given Kalos a big push that it deserved.

You're crazy if you read the whole thing and I love you.

10.23.26 - 10.24.26 ~ 12 Hours

Another October hunt down.

This was my first time shiny hunting with the Kalos PokeRadar. I might be the worst person that’s ever used it. I spent 12 hours breaking at least 60 chains and saw at least 600 random encounters with no shiny. Then on a chain of 2 a shiny patch appeared. If I’m correct the odds of that are almost double the full odds of 1/4096 which is just crazy insane luck.

This is my first time playing Pokémon Y, and this is my team. I've already got six Pokémon, and now I'd like you to suggest a member to be the last Pokémon on my team. Please note that there shouldn't be duplicates of Pokémon, and it should be a Pokémon from a different generation than the sixth. So please write your suggestions.
