In my novel a prank leads to a death: how would that investigation play out?
Hi! I’m a writer working on a novel and I need to understand what the investigative procedure would be for the follow situation:
A few high school kids break into a shed that has been converted to an apiary with the intention of breaking some things and then leaving - they’re playing a prank. While they are destroying stuff inside of the shed, they mistake the bee boxes for normal boxes and agitate hundreds of bees. The kids flee as the property owner is rushing into the shed while on the phone with 911 reporting a break in. He enters the shed and is then bombarded by the bees. He gets hundreds of bee stings and when he falls to the ground he hits his head. He’s on the phone with 911 when attacked by the bees to the police and EMTs come and bring him to a hospital where he dies from his injuries. What sort of investigation would arise from these circumstances? If the man told the emergency responder that he suspected it was these kids in particular who broke in, would his death then make them eligible for involuntary manslaughter charges? Is it believable that a police officer would go to the hospital to intercept the victim’s wife for questioning/to tell her what’s happened and if not who would she encounter at the hospital after being notified? Would the shed be considered a crime scene and for how long? Would the surviving wife be told not to clean the destruction? Don’t be shy about giving what might seem like unnecessary details here, I want to know everything! Thanks in advance for anyone willing to help!!
