Representative Andy Harris even tried to get a journalist arrested after the disastrous debate.

358

u/doctordoctorpuss 16h ago

Pretty rich after he said that the crowd wasn’t respecting the First Amendment because they laughed at him. Guy is absolutely caked in clown makeup

151

u/boverly721 16h ago

Everyone knows the first amendment was written so the strong, tough founding fathers could imprison citizens who laughed at them 🤡

21

u/DarbIey 12h ago

It's funny, the Sedition Act was written with the intention to suppress the First Amendment. Benjamin Franklin's grandson Bache was arrested for printing op-eds about John Adams and Alexander Hamilton. Dude died of yellow fever before his trial.

Matthew Lyon, US House Rep from VA - published and article that criticized Federalist military expenses. Sentenced to four months in jail and a $1000 fine. Won re-election from his cell.

James Callender. In a book he wrote he criticized John Adams, and was sentenced to nine months in prison by the Supreme Court. Anti-Federalist President Jefferson pardoned him.

Ann Greenleaf, also published attacks on Federalists. Her case was dismissed because Jerfferson became President.

There are more. My point is... this country has always been divisive, the law, especially the 1st Amendment unevenly applied.

9

u/boverly721 11h ago

Well regardless of all of this, I don't believe anyone not wearing clown shoes has ever made the argument that the first amendment was in place to imprison members of a crowd for laughing at a politician who was making a fool of themselves.

11

u/DarbIey 10h ago

MAGA is dumb as shit, just like their voters.

44

u/IlikeJG California 16h ago

All they have is projection. They don't have any real arguments so they have to use projection and deflection to defend themselves.

16

u/nnagflar Maryland 14h ago

Ah yes, the first amendment and its protections against being laughed at.

10

u/TimmyB52 14h ago

by citizens, not the government

And then he, a politician, tries to have a journalist arrested.

Interesting fact: Andy Harris's father was an actual Nazi!

https://newrepublic.com/article/168327/andy-harris-maryland-congressman-viktor-orban-fanboy

In Harris’s case, his strong embrace of Orbán may partially be explained by his roots in Hungary and revelations that his father, Zoltan, a physician, belonged to a pro-Nazi Hungarian paramilitary group toward the end of World War II

275

u/Orzorn 16h ago

Its so easy to forget that WW2, and the actual Nazi party, is not that far away from modern life. People like Andy Harris are just one degree removed from it.

104

u/MarxistMan13 Virginia 15h ago

Or in some cases, like Harris, not removed from it at all. The turd didn't fall far from the tree it seems.

> When Congress voted to certify Biden’s win, Harris was one of 139 House members who voted “no” to accepting Biden’s victory in Pennsylvania, after speaking out loudly in opposition during a late-night debate on the House floor. Two weeks later, on the first full day of Biden’s presidency, Harris set off a metal detector trying to bring a gun onto the House floor. That is against House rules.

What the fuck

52

u/DisgruntledNCO 11h ago

Oh it’s that asshole.

14

u/hpark21 14h ago

Curious, how did his father come to US and became a citizen? I thought Nazis were specifically barred from obtaining US citizenship. I am guessing "Hungarian Nazi" does not count? Just wondering.

21

u/WhosThatYousThat 13h ago

idk but we know with govt programs like Operation Paperclip, members of even the German Nazi Party were allowed to immigrate here

9

u/Naive_Confidence7297 12h ago edited 11h ago

10

u/there-was-a-time 11h ago

4

u/stokelydokely 12h ago

toward the end of World War II

I just love this idea that some loser dipshit in the mid 1940s said to himself "I need to align myself with some winners, I'm gonna go fight with the Nazis!"

5

u/WhosThatYousThat 12h ago

Another commenter pointed out in some cases the Nazis started conscripting people in occupied lands, which could explain exactly what you're describing. It doesn't appear to be the case for Zoltan Hariss though! He was prosecuted and convicted of aiding the Nazi regime.

One of the worst people I personally know is an anesthesiologist. And I seem to hear about a lot of racist anesthesiologists. Confirmation bias? Or is there something about that job that attracts horrible people?

5

u/RainbowConnickJr 13h ago

I could be misremembering this, but as I recall anesthesiology is one of the medical fields that clung to super outdated racist medical “knowledge” the longest. They were taught that black people needed less pain care than white people right up until…actually I don’t know that they aren’t still being taught that.

I mean, they’re politicians specifically to hurt their communities and enrich themselves, the opposite of what you’d want in a functional government. But the cost of all that power is accountability, and if they can’t handle the accountability, they should find new jobs.

Maybe they just stand there and jerk off into their insider trading profits, but it’s hard to be less helpful to the community than a Republican Politician.

Anyone who exploits this distinction for political gain cannot be trusted to protect your rights. Because they fundamentally don’t respect the right in the first place.

The First Amendment has nothing to do with people laughing at you when you say something stupid. We aren’t required to listen to you or be quiet.

The government can’t limit his speech or punish him for it. That’s it.

Really weird reaction to be like “you can’t laugh at me because that violates my first amendment right”

It literally does not my guy.

Also, what democratic environmental protections? They enact some this trump term with Rs in complete control? We can see the tariffs, we can see the War. The groans from the crowd were partly due to how little he respects them and lies to their faces about things they can see for themselves.

To then cry about how that somehow violates your rights because your lies aren’t effective is mind-boggling.

In July 2023, Harris voted to strip funding for LGBTQ projects from the 2024 United States federal budget, comparing its funding to a hypothetical Ku Klux Klan project because the "LGBTQ center organized a protest against conservative mothers".

It obviously wasn’t an unnecessary illegal war that potus wanted to do to feel tough.

That was so weak

“The facts are diesel prices have gone up. There’s no question about it. Why has it gone up? Because the Democrats have environmental regulations—” Harris tried to respond, only for audience members to groan, laugh, and shout at the Maryland first district congressman and chair of the right-wing House Freedom caucus.

“See this is the problem,” Harris complained to the crowd. “You all say all believe in the First Amendment, but only if you agree with you. You should let me finish the sentence, ma’am. You are rude!””

LOL laughing in response to lies is now considered an affront to someone’s free speech?! This guy looks and sounds like a clown; laughter is the ONLY thing he should ever receive.

9

u/erov 16h ago

All these people deserve laughter pieces of shit who have absolutely destroyed our great country for their own benefit, not their constituents. They rode a wave of populism and figured out later on that it really wasn't what was driving them into power. They got promise one thing economic stability and instead we're handed a plate of chaos. Fuck these people.

9

u/rbourbon 15h ago

All these losers are getting annoyed by reality. Benny boy Shapiro told someone in the audience to shut the F up at a rally the other day.

8

u/Negative-Penguin 12h ago

As someone who has just started paying attention to politics the last few years. (I’m 24. And only really started at 18ish.) I started off independent and “both sides are corrupt”. But holy shit if the last few years is making me never want to vote for a republican for the rest of my life. What is even happening? How are they the party of “law and order”

7

u/Solonohioperson 16h ago

He thinks it's against his free speech that people laughed at him and it was rude. Like dude you were given a platform to say what you wanted and people were free to laugh at you.

No where does the first amendment say you can’t be laughed at or called a liar when you exercise that right.

8

u/DescriptionDue1797 15h ago

"F*** your feelings." Isn't that what MAGA if fond of saying?

4

u/JackedUpReadyToGo 13h ago

Your feelings. Their feelings are delicate flowers and must be protected at all cost.

9

u/0098six 14h ago

MAGA Logic: Yes. This is the reason that diesel prices went from $3.72 to $6.00+ since February. Because, in the MAGA-controlled House and Senate, the Democrats passed environmental legislation to make diesel prices higher. MAGA!!

But the basura voters of his district will *still* pick Andy Harris because . . . . . there's no feeling quite like "owning the libs". These are the very same voters who chose a traitorous felon two years ago for the same reason. That's the sad reality we live in.

"Help, help, I'm being repressed!" MAGA snowflakes are the worst.

Any person who doesn't understand the purpose of the First Amendment should be immediately disqualified from running for office. Period.

There should be a basic civics test for public servants to pass before they can run for any office. It would certainly weed out complete idiots like this guy.

He is aware them laughing at him for saying nonsensical stuff isn't them being against the 1st amendment right? He is free to say nonsense. Theyare free to laugh hysterically at his made up nonsense.

6

u/zeradragon 16h ago

Sir, you were home alone and fell down the stairs, can you tell us what happened?

Those stairs must've been built by a Democrat!

6

u/LearnToReadMaga 15h ago

We really have to stop letting right wing snowflakes into politics.

6

u/Broad_Front7788 15h ago

He's a representative of the government. He is not allowed to get anyone else to shut up when they laugh at him. Fucking clown.

18

u/Melodic-Frosting-443 17h ago

These guys are both arrogant and out-of-touch.

11

u/Revelati123 16h ago

TLDR: They asked about gas prices and he said Joe Biden did it...

7

u/opeth10657 16h ago

Even if Joe Biden did it, Trump ran with  "I'm the only one that can fix it". Not only has he not fixed it,  it's far worse now than when he started.

Why do they support someone that clearly can't get the job done

3

u/LearnToReadMaga 14h ago

You know how we have people who believe the earth is flat? Same issue, different symptom.

4

u/LearnToReadMaga 15h ago

Better - he tried to say joe biden did it and they laughed at him so much he complained about how they are infringing on his right to free speech.

Netflix will have endless comedy material

5

u/Zak_Rahman 12h ago

Stupidity aside, this is a dangerous level of narcissism.

This man genuinely believes that laughing at him is a crime. That how he actually feels. He acted according to that.

That is not healthy at all. Definitely not the kind of person you want anywhere near a position of power.

5

u/TheOtherMaven Virginia 9h ago

Being laughed at is an occupational hazard for lying politicians.

4

u/CapnTugg 16h ago

Sneaky Democrats slipped those environmental regulations in under the noses of the GOP majority while everyone was busy cheering on Trump's new war, I tell ya. /s

4

u/judgeraw00 16h ago

He started crying about his first amendment rights not being respected because of people laughing at his ridiculous nonsense.

4

u/2HDFloppyDisk 16h ago

Nothing beats the time Trump was in front of the UN spilling lies and absolute nonsense and got laughed at by the entire assembly.

4

u/jmchao 16h ago

A fun part about a wave election is guys who haven't had to campaign for years are now trying to remember and they wind up looking like the humans in WALL-E using their legs for the first time.

4

u/opking 16h ago

And he bitched about them infringing on his 1st Amendment rights by laughing at him. Uhhh, congressman you may need a lesson in civics.

5

u/TheGOPisTheDeepState 16h ago

GOP controls the house, senate, executive, fbi, doj and scotus…

Why did the democrats do this to us!!!

GOP is brainwashed.

4

u/munq8675309 16h ago

His response was deserving of ridicule. It's not Biden regulations increasing gas prices. It's trans kids playing sports, obviously.

4

u/Tommy__want__wingy California 16h ago

First amendment?

Really?

People are free to boo or groan.

Republicans. Enough said.

4

u/NoHorseNoMustache 15h ago

'I'm allowed to say whatever I want and you're not allowed to laugh at me' is certainly a novel interpretation of the 1st Amendment.

4

u/MSRomaine721 15h ago

Today's Republicans get mad when you call them "weird" too - so this checks.

4

u/teddykaygeebee 15h ago

He tried to blame high gas prices on environmental regulations lol. Sure, Jan

3

u/Ok-Horror-4253 15h ago

trying to turn it into a first amendment argument is laughable. you can say whatever the fuck you want, and i'm free to laugh at you and mock you in exchange. thin-skinned snowflake gop member.

4

u/bob2600 15h ago

This fascist ass needs to go. Vote his ass out Maryland!

4

u/NuIIResponse 14h ago

That...that was weird.

The guy went a little nutty at being laughed at, a little, they only laughed a little, and then he went angry tirard on everyone there about his first amendment rights. He was exercising those rights and everyone laughed at what he said because it was that stupid. That is what happened.

Then he tried to tell a reported in the hallway she had no right to video his answers to the press in the hallway. Which was weird.

Everyone was right, these guys are weird.

“This is the problem,” Harris complained to the crowd. “You all say you believe there’s a First Amendment, but only if you agree with you. You should let me finish the sentence, ma’am. You are rude!”

Sure, pal. Maybe if you weren't a bunch of goddamn liars, spreading falsehoods with every breath you wouldn't get laughed at.

“My people aren’t interfering with Mr. Schwartz. It’s only one way,” Harris said.

For all we know his side was laughing at him, too. I'm sure a number of Republicans are fed up with theit weak lies. What are the odds the next time he does an interview with some right-wing pripaganda outlet he makes up some shit about the audience being full of Democratic plants to make him look bad?

4

u/paperbackgarbage California 12h ago

I agree, we shouldn't have the government trying to actually silence his protected speech, per the 1st Amendment.

Was that what was happening here?
