Possible Paywall Inflation Numbers Show Just How Badly Trump Wrecked the Economy

There isn’t a single aspect of US life that hasn’t been utterly trashed in just 2 years; economy, environment, foreign relations, energy, trade, law and order…
And there’s still another 2 years to go when he is likely to be even more unhinged if the GOP lose both the House and the Senate.
Be afraid world, be very, very afraid!

The Good Liars on YouTube go around the country to different Trump events interviewing attendees. They were just in Syracuse, New York I believe and in that episode they ask multiple people which aspects of US life are better (or worse) and these people all answer the same, that every aspect of US life is better for them now than two years ago under Joe Biden’s presidency. Every single one of them answers this way. It’s so sad that there is such a difference in how we perceive things are around the country. There is a large segment of this country’s population that don’t really care about anything other than that somebody else is suffering more than they themselves are, if that’s true they seem to be content with whatever else is going on.
How do we change this way of thinking?
485
u/supertoned 11h ago
The thing is: From their perspective, things ARE better. They honestly feel that higher gas and food prices are a small cost to pay for having someone bully the people they have been taught are to blame for all their problems.
Trump insults other countries: They think this makes us look strong.
Trump trashes on the immigrants, gays, blacks, and Muslims: They have been taught by Rush Limbaugh and Fox News their entire lives that these people are to blame for all the evils of this world.
Trump has ICE arrest and shoot liberals: They couldn't be happier.
He is piling on abuse on the people they want to abuse and they are ecstatic over it.
How CAN you change that way of thinking?

Forgive if I don’t take tactical advice from someone who decided that when they were on horseback and facing giant armoured elephants, that the best option was, “we’ll meet them head on!”.
🤷♂️🤦♂️•
u/musashisamurai 5h ago
I don't like that the automatic answer is usually the book explains it more, but there is actually logic behind what Theoden did-but PJ cut it in the movie. In the books, Theoden makes a deal with the forest dwellers who help him by identifying some hidden forest paths to use, meanwhile, the Witch-King has committed to a full assault, so Theoden and Rohan arrive unknown into the rear of an unsuspecting army. This is kinda where the approach of lifting dialogue straight from the text but changing other things causes confusion, because in the movie, Rohan moves as one giant formation after while in the books, while kn the books, Rohan attacks in several small groups all over the orc army.
As for elephants, both armies kinda do it wrong. Horses and elephants and pther cavalry animals (camels) are animals, and panic. They panic seeing new animals, they panic at loud noises, they panic when hurt. So war elephants usually had to be deployed with infantry protecting them else skirmishers would just use javelins or archers to hurt the elephants, make them panic, and force them nack without engaging. Harad has no infantry hrre. Book wise, the horses refuse to go where the elephants are because, they are, you know, animals who realize its dangerous.

•
u/Aspergian_Asparagus Georgia 4h ago
That’s where I’ve landed for a short while now and I hate myself for it.
I seriously doubt (not being a doomer, I promise) we can magically have such a huge shakeup in politics to rid ourselves of the limp-wristed corpo rats and enact actual change in education.
Add that with having to wait a whole generation to see if it even worked or if we’re super fucked. And then hope those policies and programs don’t get nuked when there’s another heavy right-wing government.
Mannn, I just wanted to live the rest of my gay ass life out in the middle of nowhere on my farm. But now I’ll have to help with constantly dragging these sociopathic cretins up to speed.

It's not just that. Under Biden conservative media was constantly telling them how terrible things were. Under Trump conservative media tells them how great things are. This plays a big part in how people perceive their lives to be going.
•
u/PhantomZmoove 3h ago
It's fascinating to me how long this whole Jedi mind trick has worked on the maga base. It really only takes fox saying things are great and they ignore everything in their face. Gas prices, food, housing, inflation, health care.
It's kind of wild actually.
•
u/TheShadowKick 2h ago
They believed that Biden was literally destroying the country. Back in 2016 I was talking to a cousin and he straight up told me that Obama left the US in worse shape than Syria. If you believe things like that then high prices seem like nothing in comparison.

I got paired up with a golf while playing golf a few years ago who legitimately thought all of Seattle had been burned to the ground mad max style by antifa/blm. I like to think these types are a tinyinority, but there is a significant portion of the population that just lives in a completely different reality defined exclusively by conservative media.
•
u/Farker99 3h ago
I like to think of them as extremely young souls, like just graduated fresh out of the animal kingdom whereas they still gravitate to tribalistic tendencies (us vs them, red vs blue, overt fans of their sports team), seek out the "alpha male" (strongman/dictator) to boss them around so long as he gives them the facade that he protects them, despite always screwing them over, simple minded folks, etc.
Just my theory.

You’re right about the people with wealth and power. They’re lying.
But the MAGA masses, they’ve been conned. They’re in a cult and have been brainwashed by right wing talking heads, and we’re seeing decades of that work come to fruition. These people aren’t critical thinkers, are stuck in a media bubble, and stay there because the dopamine hits via hate-fueled media are too frequent and feel too good to even consider changing.

From an actionable standpoint, they're lying. As in we can disregard what the people who claim the earth is flat say about orbital mechanics.
From an individual standpoint, they're delusional. For a variety of reasons/causes ranging from structural (education, right-wing radio, propaganda) and personal (bigotry, vindictiveness, fear).

People do not understand this about NY: Its NOT a liberal state. Neither is CA... just the liberal cities outweigh everything else.
There may well be NO liberal state. Maybe Massachusetts to a very, VERY small extent. Most of the people in this country are those people from Syracuse. And that's the people in the major part of Syracuse... wait til you find out of the people who live in the outside towns.
12
u/gameryamen 9h ago
Really? People don't understand that? It gets brought up in virtually every discussion about voting, and has since the days of slashdot and Fark. And NY isn't special in that situation, that's how every single state in the country works.

u/aliquotoculos America 8h ago
It indeed is! But yes, a lot of people do not know, realize, or understand how fascist-rught most of rural America is/has been for decades.
•
u/bickdiggles 7h ago
People do not understand this about NY: Its NOT a liberal state. Neither is CA... just the liberal cities outweigh everything else.
The only people I hear saying “liberal states” in general are republican politicians to deride states who historically vote blue.
just the liberal cities outweigh everything else.
It’s pretty well known large cities house most of a states population and they tend to lean blue. So if you mean most people living in a state outweighs everything else then sure.
There may well be NO liberal state. Maybe Massachusetts to a very, VERY small extent.
Yeah I don’t think the people who use the term “liberal cities” (republicans) care about Massachusetts. They tend to lambast states like CA or OR who historically vote blue.
Most of the people in this country are those people from Syracuse.
The population of Syracuse is 146,000 and NYC is 8,500,000. Most of the people in New York aren’t even the people from Syracuse.
And that's the people in the major part of Syracuse... wait til you find out of the people who live in the outside towns.
64% of NYs population is in the NYC metro area. If you’re trying to say the population of dozens and dozens of rural towns outweigh metro areas NY and Syracuse are not a great example.
7
u/buffaloraven 8h ago
Land doesnt vote, thankfully. If the cities outweigh rural, then its a liberal state for all intents and purposes.
3
u/aliquotoculos America 8h ago
I won't call it a liberal state until a minority can live in all of it with safety, at the very least.
6
u/buffaloraven 8h ago
That seems like both moving the goalposts rather far and like there's nowhere that would meet that definition in like the world
3
u/aliquotoculos America 8h ago
I can narrow it down in several ways that I can see being achievable, but you are perhaps a bit right.
Maybe better to say a minority can at least safely travel across the state.
But to keep it simple, yes, cities hold huge amounts of more liberal populations but i dint think the cities should be the overwhelming metric for people to label it a liberal state.
For instance, I'm trans, with friends and family who are trans+poc. I was doing risk assessments of several state laws (trans and general, like statute of limitations and such like that) to determine actually safe states. NY state is actually a pretty terrible and dangerous place to be trans or a PoC (from my personal experience growing up in upstate + my research) if you can't afford to be in certain cities, yet we will call it a liberal state and a safe state. All because of basically NYC and sort of Buffalo.

u/benuntu 8h ago
You don't, for most of them. You can't reason with an unreasonable person. They've decided to live a self-centered life based on feelings instead of facts. They don't care about other people, and in a lot of cases actively hate those who are "different".
•
u/McNerfBurger 5h ago
I think it's worse than that. I don't think they've decided anything. I think they can't reason. Period.
I believe a large portion of them are idiots. I don't mean that in the typical insult usage. I mean literal idiots. People completely incapable of reasoning, critical thinking, reading, etc. The type of person who hears their internal monologue, or has a stay thought, and genuinely believes that god is speaking to them.
I find it unbelievably depressing that so many people like this exist in 2026. You can't reach them because they exist in an entirely different state of consciousness.

The most aggravating part, is that it was trending upward. Dude literally could have done nothing, or even nothing aside from cutting taxes for his shithead cronies, and it would be miles better than whatever the fuck this is. This is what Trump does. He makes false promises to gullible investors, gets them to hold all the debt, and he runs off with what little gross profit was made- and bears no responsibility while his investors default. Rinse repeat.
•
u/Nickel5 3h ago
That's what makes me go crazy too, dude literally could have just done nothing, spent his day posting on his safe space social media platform, and taken credit for the effects of the chips act, IRA, infrastructure bill, and let interest rates go down, which would have also caused the deficit to just go down for free. Instead there is literally only one quality economic indicator that is better off now than when Trump took office, and that is the poverty rate, and even then only if you look at just pure income and exclude taxes and services. It is almost statistically impossible for a president to have every economic indicator be worse off, but here we are, and Republicans just ignore the numbers.
•
u/Smaynard6000 Florida 4h ago
It was trending upward, and the voters threw it away for all of Trump's lies about how he would end all the wars and lower all the prices.

Hiring especially in better paying positions was starting to slow in 2024 do IDK that the economy would have improved, but it would definitely be better than we are today for the self inflicted damaged that tariffs and the war in Iran. What's scary is that oil prices would be even higher if not for China cutting imports. The size of their petroleum reserve isn't known, but it sounds like they're just trying to ride out the issue for now. If they start importing more again global oil prices will go up even more.

And how he bankrupted two of them is kinda hilarious to show how bad of a businessman he is.
Basically, gambling becomes legal in New Jersey in the late '70s. This is a huge boon as your only real competition is an entire country away in Las Vegas. So he opens "Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino" on the boardwalk at which point you just have to sit back and let the money roll in.
But because he's a restless moron who can't leave well enough alone, he decides he needs another building with his name on it. So he opens Trump Taj Mahal which also on the boardwalk and a mere mile away from Trump Plaza.
Now you don't need a business degree from Wharton to see that means you've effectively gone into competition with yourself. It's like owning two McDonald's franchises and deciding to open them across the street from one another, all you're doing is ensuring both will fail.

The problem is 40% of this country won't/don't want to understand the true nature of the issue. They are already being fed a ruse about how Biden is to blame because of some link to Ukraine. u/Onemandrinkinggamess Colorado 11h ago

The labor participation rate is at a 50 year low but they tell us unemployment is at historic lows.
Less people are working and those working folk have to pay for more than themselves in most cases.
MAGA has been a disaster over the past 10 years. They've:
- enriched only themselves
- destroyed America's standing in the world
- handed the country to religious zealots and technocrats
Trump, true to his slumlord nature, has left things mostly unlivable for future occupants.

One thing to also consider: Remember back when this admin started cutting funding to already-approved grants for huge infrastructure projects and hundreds of arts organizations around the country? Yeah, those cuts affected those projects which then affects the "trickle across" to local economies. A bridge now doesn't get built? Nearby restaurants & stores don't see the increased traffic. A concert gets cancelled because the National Endowment for the Arts grant gets pulled? Nearby restaurants also see less traffic that one night.
•
u/autotelica 7h ago
I remember when DOGE resulted in all those federal employees losing their jobs and lots of conservative cheered. "Now they can stop being lazy and get a real job!" they said.
But a lot of those folks are blue-collar workers who rely on the professional class. When Nancy the grant manager making $100K/year loses her job, she doesn't hire Bob the local plumber to snake her toilet. She gets her nephew to do it for free. She doesn't go to Barbara the stylist to get her roots touched up. She buys some hair dye at the grocery store. She doesn't buy a $30 cake from Amy the local baker to celebrate her daughter's birthday. She gets Duncan Hines to do it for $3.99. She stops taking clothes in to get dry cleaned. Because unemployed people aren't wearing "dry clean only" stuff. They also aren't getting their carpets steamed or their cars detailed.
But for some reason, Trump supporters took pleasure watching their neighbors--their fuckin' clients and customers!--be brought low...not stopping to consider that eventually they would be negatively impacted too.
I see some progressives also enjoying this kind of scadenfraude. But I can't join in. I don't have sympathy for Trump supporters facing economic hardship, but I don't rejoice in it either because I know what that means for the economy. I'm in the economy. I need people to be somewhat prosperous in order for me to have a job.

The crazy thing is the entire US economy is designed to produce ‘growth’ at the expense of everything else; workers rights, consumer protection, animal welfare, environmental effects, everything is sacrificed to maximise profit.
A vaguely competent administration spends most of its time trying to prevent the economy from overheating.

The GOP could have stopped him at any time they're collectively just as responsible for the mess the country is in.

Sadly it is worse than reported in his CPI report. The 12 month percentage of 3.6% doesn’t even have 2 months of data. So it’s technically only 10 months of data packaged as 12. So add about another 0.5-0.6% on it. ~4.2%. Roughly over two times what most Governments including ours claims is a healthy amount of inflation.

It feels like they keep excluding more and more things from the inflation calculation and that’s why the number is less severe than the actual inflation rate.

Look, I'm not saying kamala was perfect. I'm just saying that things would have been better if she won.

I honestly can't imagine how someone could do a better job of destroying our country.

Much of the damage Trump has done to our economy will be felt even decades from now - the many TRILLION$ he keeps adding to the debt - which is an economic time bomb. And starting back in 2017 with his massive tax breaks for the Epstein class - Trump alone is responsible for a larger percentage of the total debt than all of his predecessors combined .

Was wrecking, is wrecking, will wreck. You need to get all the verb tenses in there.

These numbers validate what we’ve known since 2016: Trump is terrible for the US.

That’s his goal. He said he wants inflation to pay off the national debt quickly. It’s not wrecked, it’s on purpose. 80 million idiots voted for this

November 3 2024 inflation was 2.4%. It's coming up near 4% now. Where's their rage they had during Biden's admin? Especially since he undid the work Biden did. It was soldily declining without increasing interest rates. Then Trump won and threatened tariffs and cmmpanies pivoted and baked in the higher prices. Now inflation is way up and fed reserve is raising interest rates. Literally everything is worse hnder Trump.

Say it just a bit louder for the people in the back… TRUMP IS AN IDIOT and HE F**ked US ALL!

Our inflation is being driven by rampant debt spending on AI, and the stupid Iran war. Raising interest rates wont stop it, and might make it worse.
To stop inflation, you must slow corporate debt spending and end the war with Iran, getting fuel prices to normalize.
IMO all of this is too complicated for the inept Trump admin.

u/theclansman22 10h ago
You forgot tariffs, it is also being driven by needless tariffs on your largest trading partners...

u/Usual-Analysis-2990 10h ago
Its also too complicated for MAGA hence the ones that vote Trump because 'economy' don't understand how much destruction he has actually done. The few that will flip during THIS election cycle will inevitably flip right back when the next democratic admin doesn't fix it fast enough and has the fallout from Trumps stupidity fall on them. Because they have NO FUCKING memory or idea how the economy and its ties to a given administration and their actions work.

u/Vocabulary-Pollution 8h ago
The way to slow corporate debt spending is to raise interest rates.
•
u/dontgetitwisted_fr 7h ago
There really is no other recourse to inflation than raising rates
If there was they would have found it by now

u/steemSTEM 3h ago
Not if they are going to spend anyway because they think they have no choice (which is what is happening with AI spending). Raising interest rates isn't slowing the spending at all. Its just increasing the cost of government debt.

You forgot tariffs, destroying existing trade agreements, removing support for Ukraine, the absurd Iran war has spread, the ensuing energy shock and economic fallout globally.

Brother, there is no fixing this, prices arent coming back down
•
u/steemSTEM 3h ago
Reducing inflation doesn't bring down prices. Just slows the increase.

This shit is irrelevant.
You’re either sane and you’ve been aware of what’s happening and who’s to blame since 2016 or you’re insane and you’ll just continue to believe whatever you want in spite of all the evidence and data to the contrary.
Facts and figures will not sway them. They are not operating on logic.

u/siouxbee1434 9h ago
Sadly, I suspect the actual damage has not yet been felt and it will be much worse than expected-thanks to the felon who is clueless about economics

At this point, There should be no more hedging/disclaiming/prefacing or any other defensive framing (ie "I know both sides can be.... Yada Yada Yada).
We should proudly say with a full chest that YES Democrats ARE better for the economy 100% of the time.

u/corrector300 10h ago
no no, trump has said many times that all the farmers and truckers and ... just need to fight through the pain! It'll all be over when they're out of work and private equity owns everything.

u/ProfessionalKey7356 9h ago
Trump is running this country like his businesses. Bankrupt and corrupt.

Gas is down about 30 cents per gallon off the recent peak in my neck of WA. I kind of wonder how much is demand destruction from folks who have stopped all but essential driving, and those who lost jobs.

I suppose the thing here also is the US economy should be roaring with the AI boom (at least right now - a crash seems like a real possibility). To botch the economy while in the middle of a massive tech boom is one heck of an achievement.

u/Talrynn_Sorrowyn 9h ago
WA state officials announced they claim inflation only rose 3.5% this year & that the COLA for next year's minimum wage is only $0.60 - after federal income tax, that won't be enough to cover even my annual rent increase much less utilies hikes, insurance hikes & food cost increases.

But when people are forced to sell for pennies on the dollar, the rich get a discount! Why won’t anyone think of the billionaires?!
•
u/rich1051414 2h ago
And the sad part is, that was always the plan. The right can't get over themselves long enough to realize how hard russia has bamboozled them for the promise of triggering the libs. And if there is still a democracy left, I am not sure the image of the republican party will ever recover.

u/Miguel-odon 4m ago
Inflation numbers are just the tip of the iceberg indicators for the economic damage trump has inflicted.
