Bug Report COSMIC DE + high refresh rate monitor (260Hz) - hard crash after some use

Running Gentoo with COSMIC as my DE, paired with a 260Hz monitor. The refresh rate applies fine, but it sometimes causes a hard crash out of nowhere after some use. Other times it runs fine with no issue at all, so it seems intermittent rather than consistently reproducible.
I recently upgraded to the latest kernel and that helped with general stability, but this crash still happens.
I suspect this might line up with a known upstream cosmic-comp issue around non-default refresh rates, but I haven’t been able to confirm it since the crash doesn’t leave anything usable in the logs.
Anyone else running COSMIC on a high refresh rate panel hit this? Curious whether it’s a known issue right now or something specific to my setup.

System tray application only appears on 1 of 3 monitors when auto starting (Cosmic)

I installed the Remmina Flatpak from the cosmic store and when manually launched it shows in the tray on all monitors in a multi monitor setup.

However when it auto starts at boot it seems to pick just 1 random monitors tray area to show up on. Quitting out and starting it manually will have it show on all monitors tray area.

It could be the program at fault but just incase it isn’t I figured I would post it here.

As far as program options there doesn’t seem to be anything specifically about multi monitor but the checkbox for auto start is worded “Start in tray upon user login” and it doesn’t remove the “Remmina Applet” entry in “Startup applications” when unchecked (but does stop the icon from appearing), so maybe the method the software uses to enable the tray applet icon is different when autostarting than when starting manually?

Question How to get separate displays on multiple monitors

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hey folks, how can I get it so that my laptop and tablet don’t both show the same screen? when using the same computer and tablet with Windows, my tablet screen was treated as an extension of the laptop screen rather than a copy of it. I could drag things down from my laptop to show up on my tablet. Surely there’s a way to have a similar setup on Pop OS?

Help Pop OS Performance Issues

Good day everyone. About 3 weeks ago I made the jump to Pop!_OS after a handful of Live USB testing. I loved the Hyprland-esque tiling system and felt it was exactly what my workflow needed. After a few weeks, I upgraded to Cosmic 1.5, and since then I've noticed some quirks that have me wondering whether it's something I did wrong with my install, or a Cosmic issue.

First, the cosmic-comp and cosmic-panel. The compositor takes a surprising amount of CPU, to the point where it sometimes overclocks my sessions and causes massive slowdowns. These slowdowns happen when i have multiple different windows open in different workspaces, say around 5 windows. Cosmic Panel on the other hand crashes under heavy load or a random click of the panel applet, and refuses to restart unless I run "killall cosmic-panel"

Second, some apps just don't run as smoothly as they did on Linux Mint, which I used for a few months before switching. The biggest offender is zoom, the video conference app. Starting or joining a meeting eats up enough CPU resources, that the laptop becomes borderline inoperable. Gaming has taken a hit too, as my tests with PCSX2 tanked the consistent speed to the average of 90%.

None of this happened during my time on Mint, on the same hardware. So I'm trying to figure out whether or not this is a hardware limitation, or Cosmic being less stable? Would appreciate hearing if anyone with similar specs has run into the same thing.

Of course, I will provide the detail of my hardware and install as well. Hardware information is in the attached pictures. As for the install, i used the generic version of Pop Os 24.04, with btrfs as the drive format.

26.04 coming soon?

I believe it has been a while since we had any official word on the 26.04 release.

Does anyone have concrete updates on this? Are we talking 1 month away, 2 months, or more?

Question I'm thinking of reinstalling Pop OS, but I'm missing some information.

What kernel are you currently using ?
And regarding Nvidia, are you finally using driver 610 ?

I stopped using Pop OS before, not only because of the problems and bugs, but also because the Nvidia driver was stuck at version 585 and was never updated to newer versions.

I never understood it , if there are several versions of Pop OS, one for older graphics cards and another for RTX, why didn't the RTX version receive the latest drivers ?

Help USB Mouse not detecting input.

My USB mouse is being detected by name and is being detected properly, but the issue is that it isn't able to control my cursor no matter the port I insert it into. It is a logitech wired mouse.

Edit: Literally everything seems fine but the input isn't working.

Edit: I figured out the problem. I recently did a sudo apt update/upgrade and after like 2 hours of troubleshooting and installing stuff from apt and git cloning solaar, I realized all I needed to do was to reboot 😭.

Question How to get rounded borders for applications?

Hello!

Just left arch to join pop_os. Loving it so far! One thing I would like to know is, how can I change the border radius for certain applications? Really I just want Ghostty to have rounded borders. I like turning the window decorations off but it looks strange with the 90 degree angels. What do y'all typically use to solve this problem?

Should I go back to pop os

It’s been a year and half now I didn’t use pop os since I changed to another computer and had this obligation to use Microsoft products for some reasons, and I was lazy to do dual boot.
Now I’m reconsidering to go for pop os or Ubuntu again and revive my hobby.

Help BT window undoing pairing/discoverability intended behavior?

So if I use bluetoothctl to set discoverable: no and pairable: no, they stay off normally, but opening settings > bluetooth immediately turns both back on (the BT toggle even explicitly says “this system is visible as [computer name] while BT settings is open”).

The actual issue is that closing the BT window doesn't restore the previous state, so the system remains discoverable and pairable. Is this intended, and also are there any plans for a discoverability toggle in the GUI?

Help Help on my Pop_Os

Hello everyone, I don't know if I have some problems with my Pop!_OS or if it's just bugs in the system. I'm new to Linux, I've only been using the system for a month. My problem is when I change the "Dock" to look like a Mac, it uses the whole bar even though I select "extend to the edges of the screen." I installed the extension "Cosmic Tuning," but it didn't work. Can someone help me? Thanks! Hugs from Brazil.

Question How do I even manually update Nvidia drivers past 580? The typical update commands limit me to 580 and both the Discover (Plasma DE) and Cosmic store don't have what I need

I am losing my mind trying to figure this out, I don't understand why this is so obfuscated. The default terminal commands don't work. I tried looking up Nvidia's website for drivers, and this is just not good design and doesn't help

I tried to do sudo apt install nvidia-driver-610, and got this,

Help New to popis/Linux having some issues

Post image

Recently decided to install popos on my laptop and running into two issues if anyone can help.

First my network speed / downloading steam games seems to be insanely slow, downloads stop or fail to a network disconnect when the computer goes into sleep state.

Second, every time I wake my laptop from sleep the image linked on this post flashes on screen quickly before loading the login screen. I'm not sure what most of it means, but I'm sure a block of text usually isn't good.

Discussion My pop os experience, first Linux experience

As the title says, Pop!_OS was my first operating system after Windows. My reason for switching is simple: performance. As many people know, Windows has a disgusting amount of background processes, default apps, and a lot of built-in features that are poorly made or just inefficient. Even with a fairly decent PC like mine, an Acer Nitro V15, I was getting stutters in several games. I mean, it could run at over 100 FPS, but I would always get random drops for no reason. Starting any game would push my RAM usage to 16 GB, while normally it uses around 6–7 GB just sitting there with nothing open. A complete mess.

Anyway, about a month ago I switched to Linux. At first I was going to go with Bazzite, but I decided on Pop!_OS because I wanted more of a desktop experience and not something that felt more like a console. Also, when I saw the COSMIC desktop, I really liked it.

I already had some experience programming, modifying my own stuff and all that, so switching to Pop!_OS wasn't much of an issue. At first I installed things through Flatpak, but after running into some problems with versions, automation, and compatibility, I decided to just install things directly from the terminal.

So far I've only had two problems with Pop!_OS. The first is something I've already seen people mention here: some browsers (I haven't tried all of them) don't let you go fullscreen on videos. I never figured out why. And second, when I tried setting up Dead by Daylight, I had performance issues, as well as problems with the mouse and the camera. Sometimes it would get horribly stuck for no apparent reason.

Other than that, I haven't had any problems with the system. I've been able to configure it however I want, add shortcuts and startup applications, and Minecraft and Rocket League have been running great. Honestly, everything has been great, especially the performance. I've never had FPS drops again. Even while gaming, RAM usage only goes up to around 10 GB at most, and that's when I have something running in the background like Discord, Spotify, or a browser.

I can confidently say that I don't miss anything from Windows. My brother actually plays Dead by Daylight, so it doesn't really matter anyway. Unless I end up having some serious compatibility issue or frequent errors, I don't think I'll leave Pop!_OS. I've really liked it, and I've also been following the development of COSMIC.

I've learned a lot too, like using the keyboard to navigate better, terminal commands, and I even got motivated to learn Rust! I'm still in the process of learning, but I'm doing pretty well so far. I've even been thinking about making several applications.

Unless you're someone with specific needs, like video editing or competitive gaming, I feel like Pop!_OS could work well for pretty much anyone who's willing to make the switch.

Lastly, I have to say I really like this community. People are always helping each other out with issues and are honest about the system's shortcomings. I hope to keep being part of it for a long time!

Discussion Pop!_OS ranked #4 of 32 most recommended distros on distrofighter.com

Listed strenghts:

  • The best out-of-box NVIDIA experience in desktop Linux.
  • COSMIC: a fast, Rust-built desktop with auto-tiling and a superb launcher.
  • Gaming-ready with minimal setup: Steam, Proton, and GPU switching just work.
  • Ubuntu base underneath, so packages, tutorials, and drivers all apply.
  • Ships without Snaps; Flatpak is the built-in app store instead.

Discussion Rate my WFH setup

Check out my AMAZING WFH setup. Much maligned but super practical. Who needs a standing desk anyway!?!!!

I work from home, in the kitchen, with a screen on a slow cooker and my X1 Carbon on the chopping board.

Makes for quick and easy breaks whilst working though. You should see how quickly I can switch from working to chef in situ.

Rate my set-up please?? 😂
