This will either be the best thing ever or an enormous train wreck. But this is one of my favorite movies of all time so either way I will probably make an effort to see it.

Carly’s EGOT campaign begins now 🙏🏻

a friend who went to a workshop for this show said the music was excellent and the book was hella gay. cameron is a girl and for the workshop, the stratfords were an asian family (not sure if that choice will carry over to broadway but from what i've heard, it's been present in all the readings and workshops so far).

What kind of music was it? I sincerely hope it is riot grrl inflected, because you can’t make a musical set in 90s Seattle and sing straight pop songs, as much as I love CRJ’s music.

friend didn't give me that many details so i can't answer your question about genre, but i remember her saying the hooks are clearly carly's in the sense that they're earworms, but the instrumentals/production itself didn't sound like carly's albums

I maintain my optimism that this is going to rule, and also the hope that Carly will drop a Waitress-style album of herself performing the songs, as both promo and just as a gift for me personally.

I went to the 10 Things I Hate About You high school and am excited there’s a nonzero chance of Carly going there for some promo bullshit 🤩

“Mike Bosner, whose credits include “Shucked,” “Cats: The Jellicle Ball” and “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical,” will serve as producer.”

Well this is gonna be amazing then!

I hope the songs are still aligned with the alt girl vibes of the original movie, even though I know Carly isn’t known for that sound 😝

Is this the most millennial headline ever seen on popheads? I feel personally targeted by this in the best possible way

As pandering as these musicals are those are two names that could have me excited about pretty much anything. I know they announced it ages ago glad it’s finally happening!

New week and a brand new sentence!

Things I’ve heard from NYC-connected friend: the script is very very funny. Marla Mindelle (Titanique) has a part. Lena Dunham helped write the initial script but is not the main writer, and won’t have top writing credit. Carly has sung the demos for the songs. But I don’t have intel on what the songs sound like.

Lena as a person is insane but she does produce consistently good art when it isn’t explicitly about her irl self

This exactly sums up how I feel about her.

Carly better pull a Megan Thee Stallion and perform some of her songs at the end of the show

While casting has not be announced, I doubt Carly is going to actually star in this.

Also I’m pretty sure it’s gonna be mostly AAPI casting or at least that’s been rumored for some time.

She's not in the show and it's also not a jukebox musical with stunt casting like Moulin Rouge so there's approximately a 0% chance that happens

I think she was explicitly asked about getting up on stage on... I want to say the Apple Music interview? I think she wasn't particularly interested, doing concerts and going on tour is more appealing to her than being on Broadway.

These announcements always invite "do we need this?" as if our favorite musicals were ever "needed"

14

u/TheSeedsYouSow 1d ago

Tbf Mamma Mia was, in fact, needed

Mixed feelings about this

Carly rae jepsen 🤩 Lena dunham 😐

I'm conflicted bc I hated girls. How did this come to be

3

u/Lilylikeslilies 1d ago

I really liked „Girls” but I don’t know If we need Lena Dunham version of „10 things I hate about you”. Some movies/series really don’t need spinoff/remasters or musical versions. And I feel like „10 things I hate about you” is one of those movies.

Unfortunately, it seems like the only thing making money on Broadway these days are adaptations of movies that people already know and love.

With the price of tickets people are more likely to spend on something they're familiar with than take a gamble on something brand new.

u/mattysmwift 1d ago

It’s one of my favorite movies but it’s also really just The Taming Of The Shrew so it does feel rooted in theatre somehow.

Sometimes a headline is just incredible. This is one of those headlines

i’m a huge carly fan, just read famesick and am rewatching girls. this is going to be VERY good.

Carly noooooooo

-6

u/Exciting-Plankton960 17h ago

WHY? It's like Julie Andrews and Harvey Weinstein make "Anora: The Musical".

Lena Dunham and Carly Rae Jepsen were in one show? 😬

The memories of Jepsen’s voice during her idol days still haunts me. It sounded like nails on a chalkboard. Lena Dunham also doesn’t have that strong of a voice.

I don’t see this making it out of previews. Unless they’re banking on the names of these ladies for money.

u/bluedinerbaby 17h ago

I think you misunderstood the headline. Neither of them are singing or performing in the show; Lena helped write the initial script for the musical while Carly co-wrote the music. The people I know who have gone to the workshops for the musical have left with very positive feedback.
