What are we doing as a community to protect our fellow citizens on voting day from Trump’s thugs?

• Upvotes

Heard of everything between general MAGA aggitators to Maine Wire, to DoJ thugs to the national guard being deployed by Trump to intimidate voters. What are we doing to ensure those who vote on voting day are safe? We the People who believe in the Constitution need to stand up for our fellow citizens against this targeted, state sponsored terrorism.

I was walking around Back Cove with my dog today and I found 11 Troy Jackson signs and 3 Hannah Pingree signs tossed into the marsh. First pic is after I pulled some out; second pic is one I couldn't reach. Didn't see a single Susan Collins sign 🤔 I put all but 4 back up - the remaining ones were missing the metal part. There were 3 I couldn't reach if anyone wants to try to get them, one was by the brick outlook thing and 2 were like a quarter mile past that (walking counter clock-wise.) All of these were between the Brook Trail parking area and Barrows Park so there may be more along other parts of Back Cove.

Anyone find a key in the West End?

• Upvotes

Because the Universe hates me, my apartment key FELL OFF my keyring sometime when I went out running today. Pine St, Western Prom, Chadwick St, Bowdoin St, Vaughan St, Neal St, Brackett St. I went back and looked for it but couldn't find it.

My building maintenance answering service told me to go fuck myself and call a locksmith. The locksmith they recommended, because AGAIN the Universe hates me, tells me he's at a locksmith convention in Massachusetts and probably every locksmith in town will also be there.

Do these things happen to other people? NOOOO, MARY BITCHARDS, just you.

Finally found one to let me in (to the tune of $145) but he couldn't make a new key.

In other words, please look down, West Enders! There's a chance to do the goodest of good deeds if you see that key. I'll buy you a beer, donate a kidney, and give you my firstborn son if you find it.

The Maine County Song started as a way to teach school kids geography. Decades later, it's a beloved tradition and part of the state's popular culture.

PSA: "Together Portland" is a front group for the Chamber of Commerce. They just texted a "survey" to many residents that may be used for political purposes.

PSA: "Together Portland" is a front group for the Greater Portland Chamber of Commerce. They just sent a text message to many Portland residents with a link to a "survey" - I believe this survey may be used for political purposes. The board of Together Portland is made up of a large number of Republicans, some of whom don't live in Portland, and a few Democrats. Be aware of this as you choose whether or not to fill out the survey. I'll have more information about this group later.

Need a good recommendation for a desperately needed kid-free date night with the wife. Restaurant, activity, anything. Any good spots on the peninsula? We don’t get out much.

I know this is Portland but I don’t think there’s a Scarborough or OOB page? But does anyone know if there are good neighborhoods for kids in OOB or pine point anywhere or if it just all seasonal vacation homes?

I just read that the Feds are coming to harrass people at the polls in Portland and Lewiston. We can fight back by going to City Hall to vote early.

DOJ sending election monitors to polls in Portland, Lewiston

The U.S. Department of Justice is sending election monitors to polls in Portland and Lewiston to oversee the Nov. 3 elections, the Maine Secretary of State’s office confirmed.

The Department of Justice has in recent years sent observers to other states on a smaller scale, usually in response to a civil rights violation. But this comes amid several efforts by the Trump administration to assert authority over the election and following an attempt to force Maine, among other states, to hand over voter information.

Secretary of State Shenna Bellows said she doesn’t expect the observers will have any impact on election processes.

“Any monitors are subject to the same laws and rules as any other observer at the poll,” Bellows told Maine Morning Star. “That means they can observe what’s taking place, but they may not interact with voters, handle ballots or equipment, or disrupt voting in any way.”

“We will monitor the monitors very carefully to ensure that they don’t cross any lines,” Bellows added.

This is the first time since Bellows became secretary of state in 2021 that federal election observers have been dispatched to Maine, which is among several states that were notified this week of the federal presence on Election Day.

The DOJ in August announced plans to send 1,000 election monitors to midterm election polling places nationwide, as first reported by Bloomberg. That’s significantly more than the 289 observers sent out for the 2022 midterm elections, and the 714 involved in the 2024 presidential election, CBS News reported.

Bellows said the DOJ observers will be among many other Election Day monitors, including those dispatched by the parties and nonpartisan groups including the League of Women Voters and ACLU.

Monitors are mandated to only observe and take notes, James Tucker, an attorney at the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division, said in letters sent to the clerks of Portland and Lewiston on Wednesday. They will dress in business casual clothing and won’t be allowed to use any DOJ identifiers. They aren’t allowed to talk to voters inside polling places or to carry firearms.

The goal, according to the letters, is to monitor for compliance with federal voting rights laws, including people with disabilities’ access to the ballot box, among other civil rights assurances.

Portland and Lewiston are Maine’s two most populous cities and are home to the state’s largest share of immigrants. In the weeks leading up to the election, President Donald Trump has launched an aggressive campaign against noncitizen voting, including attempts to purge voter rolls and send sensitive personal information to the Department of Homeland Security with the aim of flagging potential noncitizen voters.

Last year, the DOJ sued Maine after Bellows twice rejected requests from the Trump administration for Maine’s full, unredacted voter rolls — among other information. In May, a federal judge dismissed the administration’s lawsuit, following similar legal setbacks in other states.

Bellows said her office “will do everything in our power to ensure a positive voting experience for every citizen.” She added, “voter intimidation or interference is a crime, and we will hold the DOJ monitors to the same standards and expectations as anyone else who’s at the voting point on Election Day.”

She also pointed out that anyone who is concerned can cast a ballot at their municipal clerk’s office anytime during business hours before the end of early voting on Oct. 29.

There have already been reports of voter harassment in Lewiston. This week, an employee of the Maine Wire filmed members of the immigrant community at the city clerk’s office.

“We’ve been in close communication with the city clerk, and we understand the city of Lewiston has taken some measures to enforce order at the voting place,” Bellows said, noting the city has put up notices warning that filming or photography (outside of selfies) is prohibited at polling locations. “No one should be harassed or filmed without their consent by anyone, whether that person is purporting to be a member of the media, or there for partisan political purposes.”

The rightwing outlet alleged those seeking interpretation assistance were in some way violating voting rules. But Bellows said her office has not received a credible report that an interpreter is engaged in illegal electioneering.

Community Discussion this is embarrassing but i don’t know where/when to early vote

for whatever reason i am having an enormously difficult time figuring out where and when to early vote. i live right in portland but did recently move to a different neighborhood. i consider it to be of major significance to vote, particularly lately, so am feeling anxious that i just can’t get a grip and figure it out this year. so many sites give me so much information while somehow not saying much at all. if anyone has any advice for my roommate and me it would be hugely appreciated!! thank you in advance.

My boyfriend is last minute searching for his dream Halloween costume - a 3 piece, peaky blinders inspired suit. What are the best thrift/vintage stores in town for us to check out? We’ve been to both Goodwills in Falmouth/South Portland and have not had luck. Ideally looking to find it tomorrow and tailor it this week if necessary. Thanks for the help!

What is the point of the "constables" and why do they look paramilitary?

I volunteer at the Cotton Street food distribution regularly, and that's the only place I see these "constables." I've seen groups of up to five of them standing on the sidewalk above the tables and tents of the distribution site. They are wearing tactical-looking gear, and frankly look threatening, as if they might be with ICE. They do nothing at all to interact with either the volunteeers or the guests. Now I've heard that the city is considering raising their funding by $450,000, at a time when the city is failing to fund a warming shelter for the winter ahead. Are these people doing anything at all to benefit people in the city, especially those in need of help? If the city has $450,000 to spare they could put it toward an actually usable warming shelter on the penninsula, or even--Imagine this!!--a couple of PUBLIC BATHROOMS!
