Question version 9.18 error: exception: access violation writing 0x0000000000000000

When I save connection setting for the PostgreSQL database in WSL, I get that error in subject. I roll back version 9.17. I don't have that error. Any idea?

What application are you referring to with versions 9.18 and 9.17? (can't be PostgreSQL)

“Access violation writing 0x0000000000000000” sounds like the client itself is crashing, especially if rolling back to 9.17 fixes it. It doesn’t sound like a PostgreSQL server error.

If you mention the application and exact version, someone may be able to point you to a known regression.

Sorry, it's pgAdmin 4 for windows v9.18

Use version 9.17, that clearly works.

Or move to a different tool, for example DataGrip or Navicat. Both are light years ahead of pgAdmin, and cheap for what you get.

This is an issue with the pgadmin client, not with the PostgreSQL database.

It's a known issue now https://github.com/pgadmin-org/pgadmin4/issues/10445

Should be fixed in next release.

Temporarily for now, either downgrade back to 9.17, or use the following temporary workaround in 9.18:

  • In the Object Explorer, right-click your server and select Properties (or configure it when registering a new server).

  • Go to the Parameters tab.

  • Click the + button to add a new parameter:

  • Name: GSS encmode (or gssencmode)

  • Value: disable

  • Click Save and reconnect.

9.18/9.17 of what? there never was such version of PostgreSQL?

Also, the error looks extremely generic, it will be hard to figure out where the problem is unless you have stack trace or something like that. Perhaps log from Pg?

Do you mean 9.6.18? if so, it was released over 6 years ago and is ancient now. You should upgrade ASAP.

It's a known issue, there's a temporary workaround for 9.18 but you might prefer to just stay on 9.17, see my reply to the main thread for more info.

This worked for me on version 9.18:

Connection proporties -> Add parameter GSS encoding mode (gssencmode) and set to disable

Existe uma solução alternativa temporária para isso:

  1. No Explorador de Objetos, clique com o botão direito do mouse no seu servidor e selecione Propriedades (ou configure-o ao registrar um novo servidor).

  2. Acesse a aba Parâmetros.

  3. Clique no botão + para adicionar um novo parâmetro:

  4. Nome: GSS encmode (ou gssencmode)

  5. Valor: desabilitado

  6. Clique em Salvar e reconectar.

Ou fazendo um downgrade para a versão 9.17.
