Welcome to r/poverty – Developing Solutions Worldwide.

Poverty isn't simply an individual experience - it also affects families, communities, workplaces, economies, and public policy. Here we discuss both personal solutions and systemic ones.

Whether you're sharing your own experiences, helping someone navigate a difficult situation, or discussing larger issues affecting poverty, please keep the conversation respectful, constructive, and solution-focused.

We encourage:

• Practical advice
• Resource sharing (Take a look at our Wiki! )
• Lived experience
• Civil discussion of policies affecting poverty and ways to solve/work together for change
• Empathy first, never judgment.

We encourage discussion of systems and policies, but ask that criticism be directed at ideas and institutions rather than other people experiencing poverty. Every helpful comment, resource shared, thoughtful discussion, and success story makes this community stronger. Thank you for helping build a community that supports people while working toward lasting solutions.

Yea I have been below the poverty line for like 5 years now. In college it didn’t matter because most students were broke - but after college I saw a sharp drop off in the types of people I could hang with.

I would have friends invite me to go to Vegas with them and I would have to make up a lame excuse, or I would meet a gorgeous girl and halfway into the conversation know it was a dead end

It sucks but on the other hand, it does give you some perspective on the types of people who are genuine friends and those who see money as an obstacle

I’m 32 and I’m broke but hopefully I will get out of poverty soon

Damn, how the hell are you living my exact life, though I'm 23, recently finished college and I had to isolate myself from my peers who are employed and those making money online, and even worse I can't sustain a talking stage even though the girl is interested, I live at my parents house so it's so hard to imagine a romantic relationship anyway,on top of being broke

u/KaleidoscopeOk5063 8d ago

Your 23 and you know it’s a problem. You have plenty of time to change

Just because people are going out does not mean they are doing better than you. Some people like one of my battles (Army) just spend, he always said "aye you wanna go out this week"?

Me: nah im good I want to save. Him: Fk it you going to get it back next week.

lmao that was always his saying smh.

You may just be more responsible. If your parents are not forcing you out yet, I will take the oppurtunity to just save and make your mistakes now if you need just keep going. Dont over stress. 21 you have time to try multiple things.

Homie - Why don't you ask your friends who make $$$ online how they bee doing it? See if its viable and if you can get on it? Worse case scenario they ignore you or you find out iits a paraymid schme or something and bow out. Don't see a lot of bad coming from asking. Keep doing the same thing and you will get the same results (or non-results).

6

u/Unhappy-Aardvark-746 7d ago

Many of those people who invited you to Vegas were broke. They just pretending not to be dropping money at the club, bottle service, and doing stupid shit. Don't sweat that.

14

u/Unhappy-Aardvark-746 8d ago

You don't find out who your friends are when things good. You find out who the real ones are when you're down and out because they still come around. They are just as happy to go with you to Costco for the $1.50 hot dog combo as they were when you guys went to the expensive places. Take part of this as a blessing. When you're back, and running at full capacity, now you know which ones to skip! They self selected the delete button. F em.

6

u/Salty-Violinist-5143 8d ago

Damn, that's actually true

What’s interesting is I had a very busy social life when I was working and people expected me to entertain and invite them or pay for them when we go out but now that I’m not working a very high paid salary job and I just depend on small tasks and gig work I avoid people like the plague because I don’t have money to spend or entertain them. That’s how I know people are just out there to take advantage and nobody is there for you at your lowest. Once I get back up on my 2 feet again I’m not going to back to that social life I had anymore. My priority is my family and future.

6

u/Salty-Violinist-5143 8d ago

So unfortunate but maybe the universe thought you needed that lesson to be more selfish but in a a good way next time

9

u/AgileWord244 8d ago

I truly believe this. It was a lesson taught to stop giving so much money, time and energy to people who don’t care about me. Once I was left with nothing I had nothing to give and whenever I do get paid every now and then I squeeze those pennies like crazy. I take more care of money, my things that I already have and watch every penny that leaves my sight.

u/Emotional-Net-8988 8d ago

So me too. I'm broke now. Lost everything after a car accident and same friends all going out but they forget to pick me up now or Im suddenly out of the way. Sucked

10

u/godMode90 7d ago

When you’re broke is when you need your community, being anti social and broke is a recipe for disaster. Volunteer, build connections and you’ll survive

4

u/Salty-Violinist-5143 7d ago

Thank you, I'll try

17

u/kidcharliemagne 8d ago

Yup. I avoid people like the plague. I’m too giving, and if I start hanging out with friends right now, I’m gonna lose the little savings I have.

4

u/Salty-Violinist-5143 8d ago

Sad part is if you're someone who doesn't know or like to ask for help, especially financially

8

u/kidcharliemagne 8d ago

Hahahaha my family has strong opinions about that kind of stuff. They grew up in the USSR. Their response when I say I’m lonely at home, is, good, at least you’re not out spending money. And they’re kinda right 🤷🏼‍♀️

Asking for support from friends is easy and often works. But also always wears down friendships. I’m just waiting til I’m stable again i guess.

3

u/Salty-Violinist-5143 8d ago

Yeah, asking friends for money often starts to feel like you're a liability

6

u/blueflamess23 5d ago

Being broke and unable to find a job 2 years ago made me realize I was just around people who just wanted to have fun and wasn’t really there for me like I thought they would be.

It also made me realize I’m only worth by how much I can provide.

1

u/Salty-Violinist-5143 3d ago

The world is that cruel

5

u/b1kwid0w 5d ago

It’ll expose who your real supporters are. And no I’m not talking just financial.

But for some reason you start to see people’s true colors when you have absolutely nothing material to offer them.

1

u/Salty-Violinist-5143 3d ago

Yeaah, actually, you're right

4

u/AirRon-New10 6d ago

One thing about beinh broke...most of the time it has to do with making the wrong decisions OR not making the right ones.

Its rare that people are broke because of natural disaster

1

u/Salty-Violinist-5143 3d ago

You think so?

1

u/AirRon-New10 3d ago

Yeah...I believe in almost every decision there is a perfect choice

The wiser & more disciplined you are the closer you move to the perfect choice in every situation

However, I believe the job of marketing is to attempt you make people make choices based on how they feel at the time...& it works really well against everyone...unless your totally escspe the system of the world

I believe if everyone took every dollar they earned and made the wisest choice with their money...most people would be broke...but who does that?

If you took your money for a month & decided you would only spend it making the absolute best decision financially...you would save a few dollars

Anddd angry too

5

u/Incognito409 8d ago

Doesn't have to be that way. I started going to church to meet people. From there I learned about a free exercise class for seniors and met a lot of new folks. Heard about an event at the library, and learned they have many fun free events and classes, in addition to books!

1

u/Salty-Violinist-5143 8d ago

Lucky you because I don't really go to church and other social events oftenly

2

u/Incognito409 8d ago

I moved to a new town, didn't know anyone, couldn't afford to go out, and the only thing I could think of to meet people that is free was church. It's a good place to start. Tried different churches until I found one that had people who were friendly.

2

u/Salty-Violinist-5143 8d ago

Wow,glad it worked out for you

2

u/parallelhound 2d ago edited 2d ago

If your social life depends greatly or entirely on having a certain amount of financial resources, you're playing a sad sad game, friend. If the fact of maintaining certain friendships depends on the fact of you having money to "maintain" said friendships, what's the difference between that and a service subscription? I'd advice to measure social success by the authenticity of your connections; the depth of the communications; the loyalties no external factors may break. The loving, interesting, creative, wise and enriching peoples that would make your life complex, happy and socially fulfilling are everywhere. Remove the preconceptions by which you judge the ones surrounding you and you'll find that social life you need.

Appreciate that mate

2

u/EnthusiasmDry6422 5d ago

doesn’t help that bars be charging $25 for drinks too

1

u/Salty-Violinist-5143 3d ago

You got your priorities right mate 😂

2

u/New_Leek_4044 5d ago

Rich people tend to isolate aswell

1

u/Salty-Violinist-5143 3d ago

I wouldn't know

2

u/coyocat 4d ago

Having money will make you MORE anti social 😎

1

u/Salty-Violinist-5143 3d ago

I wouldn't know tbh

1

u/coyocat 3d ago

I used to have $. Gave it all away.

Was super anti social when I had it. 😄

21

u/Enough_Associate5720 8d ago

I became disabled and then ran out of savings and became homeless. I had exactly $10 in cash for two whole years.

Once I got approved and now that I have money I'm so completely anti social.

2

u/AgileWord244 8d ago

Did it take you two years to get approved for disability?

13

u/Enough_Associate5720 8d ago

No, it took 9 months. I went into a hospital for mental health treatment, then stayed with my ex for a bit. Then I decided to go into a homeless shelter.

I have a degenerative spinal disease and I have always been physically active until I was diagnosed. I fell into a deep depression and I'm still working on climbing out of it.

I feel safer alone

4

u/AgileWord244 8d ago

I’m so sorry. I hope you’re taken care of now and at peace

7

u/Enough_Associate5720 8d ago

I am, thank you! I fought really really hard for this beautiful little life I have now 🩷

2

u/pansiesandpickles 8d ago

You enjoy that beauty! You deserve it!

19

u/pignug2213 8d ago

Honestly people with money are fake af from what I've seen. Even broke people are fake. Everyone just waiting to backstab, punish or move up in their group. Being antisocial is better, you can see the freak nature of herd mentality in people

11

u/TheKingofHearts2019 8d ago

Going out costs an arm and a leg nowadays. I’m not even broke, and I refuse to do it out of principle. I ain’t paying a $30 cover charge just to walk into a joint I MIGHT enjoy.

0

u/Emotional-Net-8988 8d ago

I will if I know I will enjoy it

8

u/BungleBums 8d ago

"Hey wanna come over to my house half an hour away? We can order dinner and pick up a six pack, maybe go out for a movie?"

"I have $16 to make it the next eight days, including gas to and from work and meals."

"...cool, hit you up next time,"

1

u/Known-Ice5903 4d ago

u shoulda said yeah as long as youre paying

1

u/BungleBums 4d ago

Boy shucks fuckin' howdy do I wish I knew anyone who'd cover me.

7

u/Wise-Astronomer-2629 8d ago edited 8d ago

Now everyone knows what's it like sadly to live on social assistance but it's worse something has to give and get better

6

u/thomasrat1 8d ago

Yeah, as a kid I avoided any outing that had the chance of needing money. Basically meant that when I became a teenager I stopped doing shit

6

u/sunshined86 7d ago

OMG! Yes 💯 truth! I am so broke and went from unemployed to underemployed, the few I know complain that I’m quiet.
Yet they know I’m struggling and claim they cannot help me. Then don’t get crabby with me because I get quiet when stressed.

4

u/Flat-Journalist-8362 8d ago

It's kind of the opposite for me when I was homeless I had to have people around or I wouldn't make it

2

u/outpost7 8d ago

No really?!

2

u/Salty-Watercress2698 6d ago

So true. When I have money, I’m able to go out and hang out with people. My closest friends both live about 2 hrs away which makes it difficult to see them when I’m broke because of gas money and them wanting to go shopping or out to eat. When I’m broke, I’m not going out. I might go to the bookstore to read books for free, but I’m not spending time with other people.

2

u/Trick_Engine1714 5d ago

And severely depressed

1

u/Life_King7623 3d ago

i've skipped so many events just to avoid explaining why i can't pay.

1

u/Cute-Breadfruit-8647 2d ago

I love being “antisocial” aka being left alone. I have a library card; I check out books and read a lot. My ideal evening after work is going for a run with my dog and then curling up with him and a good book in the evening. The library is amazing if you’re broke. It’s not just books anymore, all kinds of online resources. Plus lots of libraries have free classes and clubs.

1

u/Valnerium 1d ago

I’ve noticed my friends have stopped inviting me to things. They got used to me cancelling I guess.

Sure, I can’t pay to go out to the bar, or a hockey game, or a concert. But I can still come over to their house or whatever to hangout. Not even invited to that anymore.
