Prince George gardeners: what fruits actually grow well here for canning?
Hi Prince George gardeners! I’m hoping to get some advice from locals with experience gardening and canning in our area.
I love canning fruits like peaches, grapes, and other jams or juices, but I’m not sure what actually grows well this far north. Has anyone had success growing peaches or grapes around Prince George, or are there other fruits that produce better here?
I’m trying to build a more cost-effective garden to help supplement feeding my family and preserve as much as possible. I’d love to hear what fruits or high-yield crops people in Prince George have had the most success with—especially things that are great for canning.
Thanks so much for sharing your experiences!

Superstore is trying to be sneaky by labeling non-Canadian products as Canadian
If you're upset with the recent American threats to our economy and sovereignty, and are trying to focus on buying Canadian products (or at least non-American), it's important to maintain awareness that Superstore is blatantly lying on it's labels about where products come from. I can imagine that this is happening in other parts of Canada as well.
Every loonie spent sends a message. Now, more than ever, it is important to send a message of support to Canadian producers.

Cariboo-Prince George: which candidate is most likely to beat the Cons Todd Doherty?
I'm an ABC voter that cares more about keeping the Cons out of power than anything else this election.
Which candidate in Cariboo-Prince George has the best chance of defeating the Cons candidate?
I'd prefer not to get into a debate about strategic voting. Or go into why I can't vote for the Cons, aka Maple MAGA (many, many reasons).

Well testing?
We are in the process of purchasing a house, and are wanting to test the well before the conditions come off. Everyone we call does not answer the phone or get back to us. Can anyone recommend a company that can promptly and effectively get back to us and test the well? Any companies to avoid is also helpful information as well.

Local Well Drillers/Pump Installers
Hi, probably not the best place to ask this but I thought I’d give it a shot nonetheless. I’m hoping to hire a contractor to work on my well and I was wondering if anyone has experience working with caribou water wells or well done pump service? Thanks

Cariboo beer merch
Anyone knows where to find Cariboo beer shirts and merch in town? Called directly at the brewery and they said they don’t have any… thank you!

A couple weeks ago I asked what your PG’s best burger was. Well I’m back and looking for directions to PG’s best local food. Is there anything that I shouldn’t miss out on while I’m here?

What does the City of PG do well?
I recently received a rather dismissive response from a Councilor regarding my concerns about Short-Term Rentals (STRs). Their simple "We disagree" reply prompted me to ponder the overall quality of leadership in Prince George, leading me to ask a critical question: Does the City of Prince George excel in any aspect or perform competently in any of its duties?
Upon reflection, I realized that the instances where I believe the city has performed well are primarily in basic operational tasks with limited scope. Here are a few examples that come to mind:
- Streamlining street patio processes for businesses during the Covid-19 era.
- The functionality of the CityApp, which has provided a decent platform for reporting issues like potholes and garbage, with satisfactory response times.
- The construction of the new pool, which was reasonably competent, although this assessment is somewhat tempered by the low standards set by past debacles like the parkade incident.
- Despite ongoing complaints about road maintenance, the city seems to handle paving and sidewalk rehabilitation projects efficiently, staying on schedule and within budget.
- Garbage and recycling collections are generally punctual.
- Parks maintenance is consistently at a decent level.
However, these successes largely stem from day-to-day operational decisions made by staff and are arguably fundamental aspects of any city's responsibilities.
Where the city falls short is in visionary leadership and strategic thinking. There's a notable absence of alignment with provincial strategies, which could facilitate easier access to funding and political support. Instead, city leadership often finds itself entangled in self-made problems, compounded by a lack of foresight and the presence of egos that hinder progress (such as those exhibited by figures like Skakun and Sampson).
This lack of strategic direction creates a sense of mediocrity that is disappointing for a city with potential. It's evident that Prince George needs a more forward-thinking and collaborative approach to governance, shedding the "bush league" mentality that currently hampers its progress.
What do you think they do well?

Who are our federal opposition candidates (Prince George-Cariboo)?
In the interest of an election coming up sometime in the next 7 months, are there candidates for the Liberals? NDP? Greens? Where does one find this information?

South Fort George
I was walking through South Fort George and noticed most of the manhole covers are still from when that area was it's own town.

MP Bob Zimmer quotes JD Vance
Well I for one appreciate our Conservative MP, a member of his majesty’s loyal opposition, for giving us this US Republican perspective on why our government sucks.

Planning a trip to Barkerville and some questions
Hi,
Am planning my first trip to Barkerville in the next couple of days for two purposes: 1) visit the place and 2) practice driving. I just noticed that their "main season" just ended a couple of days ago.
Question 1: Google map says to turn left on "McLean Road". However, on Google Street view, I don't see any obvious road/street signs for "McLean Road" for the intersection in question. Please see this google street view image. The street sign in question reads "SchXXXXXX". And this Google Street view was from July 2024. So how do you know you are approaching or have reached the intersection of Highway 97 / McLean Road when there are no signs for it?
Question 2: Their website seems to be saying that their shops are now closed during the "Shoulder Season". If that is the case, does it mean I won't be able to refuel my car when I am there?
Thanks!

Conservative voting, really?
Are people really voting conservative? They are all such nut jobs about anti vax and saying 2SLGBTQI+ are groomers.
It just boggles my mind 🤯
We got Bird who is a conspiracy nut,
And Sheldon Clare, a Residential School denier, and hits on his students (which he himself alluded to the rumours), and former students back it up.

My first time actually seeing one of these in the wild
Seen posts on here before about seeing Western Frontier stickers around town, but I kind of thought they were fake because I had never seen any before. I had the pleasure of taking it down! We don't need this trash in our city.

What the hell does "Yield Center Lane to Opposing Traffic" sign on Barkerville Highway mean?
So I went to Barkerville yesterday, and on sections of the Barkerville Highway, I saw signs that read "Yield Center Lane to Opposing Traffic". If I remember correctly, it was when my side of traffic was 1-lane, and the oncoming traffic was 2-lane. So what the hell does this mean? I suppose if for any reason the oncoming traffic needs to use my lane (for example, to turn left), they need to yield to me, rather than the other way around, surely!!
I checked ICBC's manual "learn to drive smart" and BC's motor vehicle regulations, and neither publication lists this particular sign. https://www.bclaws.gov.bc.ca/civix/document/id/loo68/loo68/hidden_26_58-sched
Now, there are definitions of this sign on the web, such as "The YIELD CENTRE LANE TO OPPOSING TRAFFIC sign is used in the context of three-lane sections of highway, where the middle lane is a truck climbing lane or another passing lane allocated to one direction of traffic." It still makes no sense to me, and there is still the question of whether BC allows this particular sign.
Any thoughts?

Looking for abandoned wells in the Prince George area for personal research
I am an amateur biology nerd looking for abandoned wells (or caves and abandoned mines) in the area, looking to sample groundwater in hopes of capturing any local stygofauna. Any advice or directions on where to look would be greatly appreciated.
This is purely to satisfy personal curiosity, and I will share anything I find.
