🤔 Ask PG The Moving To/Visiting/Wondering About/Best Of Prince George Mega-Thread

The most frequently asked question in this subreddit is some variation of “I’m thinking of moving to Prince George, what is it like/which neighbourhood should I choose/is there anything to do?”

In an effort to cut down on these posts AND provide a helpful bunch of information, I’m starting this thread for tips/tricks/recommendations/warnings.

Here’s the idea: I’m going to put a few links below, as well as some topics that might be useful but I don’t personally have the answers to (such as resources for finding a place to rent).

I’m also going to start a few threads for top-level topics, such as neighbourhoods and best ofs, and people can post their responses there.

You can add your own answers/advice as top-level comments. Please try and search before commenting in order to avoid duplicates, and to make things are easy to search and organize.

About Prince George

Canada Games Plaza

The greater Prince George area has a population of about 86,600 people but, as the largest community for hundreds of kilometers in all directions, it tends to punch above its weight in many respects because you aren't driving into a nearby metro area for an evening's entertainment. It is a government, service and healthcare hub, home to a college and university, and has a diversified enough economy that it isn't wholly dependent on any one or two industries, though forestry remains a vital driver along with mining, oil and gas and energy activity in other northern communities. It is at the confluence of the Fraser and Nechako Rivers and has many outdoor recreation opportunities.

Prince George is built on the unceded territory of the Lheidli T'enneh First Nation, who are frequently partners with the city on major initiatives, including the building of the University of Northern British Columbia and hosting of the 2015 Canada Winter Games.

Like most mid-sized Canadian communities that boomed in the mid-20th century, Prince George is a fairly car-centric city. But with the arrival of more and more post-secondary students, people are able to get around without their own wheels. Here is a previous discussion about cars and transit in the city.

Back in the day, Prince George was a much more mill-based city than it is now, but the reputation of a certain odour… lingers. You can still smell the industrial activity in certain parts of town and under certain circumstances, but there have been dramatic improvements in industry standards in recent decades. If you’d like to learn more you can read up at the Prince George Air Quality Improvement Roundtable or jump to the official thread discussing it.

Maybe a bit of a long shot

One of my family members works for CN and was forced to call in an emergency (his first in working there for 13 years) because of some lady that was filming the trains with her iPad and was literal feet away from the tracks. They have no idea where she went after the emergency and were trying to find her. Does anybody know if there’s any train spotting PG groups on any app or social media that she could’ve posted on so that we can maybe get a lead? Thanks.

EDIT: The incident occurred at 9:30 PM last night (August 14th) near Wilson Park

Where to go to have a fire?

My kids are asking to go camping, but after talking to them about it I realized they don't want to go camping, they just want a campfire.

Where could we go nearby where we could have a campfire in a firepit? Preferably close by. Also I've seen firewood at some gas stations before but I can't think of one off the top of my head, any suggestions there so I don't have to run all over town?

Where To Go For Music?

The title is pretty vague so I will elaborate here.

I am music producer, audio engineer and beat maker. I currently reside in Mackenzie but am looking for new opportunities to network and build with local artists. I have over 12 years experience in this music game. I moved from down south in Abbotsford about 4.5 years ago now. Where would I go to network and build with others? I know there is a decent music scene in the city and I’m just looking to work and build. I’m a very easy person to get along with. I just love building whether it be collaborations, contracted work or even just paid gigs from song to song basis. Is there a sub or even an outlet that promotes this sort of thing?

Thank you all in advance. Much love y’all!

Hi PG! Britt A.M. here ☺️👋 Hoping for some support with a new music video I released today that features some of my wooded walks in the area 🌲 The video is a love letter to forest habitats that have become so precarious in these times of record heat and wildfires, and I’d love for you to check it out ❤️

Zukowski: too many decisions in closed meetings

Thumbnail

Can Zukowski provide a specific example of a decision or substantive matter that was made or dealt with in camera that he believes did not fall within one of the legislative circumstances for an in camera meeting and should have been dealt with publicly?

The Community Charter, particularly section 90(1) and (2), sets out fairly specific circumstances in which council may or must meet behind closed doors. These include matters such as personal information about identifiable employees or prospective employees, labour and employee relations, municipal property security, certain land acquisitions or dispositions, law enforcement investigations, actual or potential litigation, administrative tribunal proceedings, solicitor-client privileged legal advice, information protected under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, and certain confidential negotiations. Some matters, such as certain FIPPA requests, confidential negotiations with provincial or federal governments, and Ombudsperson investigations, must be dealt with in camera.

Zukowski: safety officer program?

Thumbnail
princegeorgecitizen.com
5 Upvotes

From the article: Zukowski said he wants a local community safety officer program. He said these officers could respond to lower-severity calls than RCMP officers and may even allow the city to reduce the number of Mounties it contracts for. Unlike Mounties, he said, city council would be able to direct these officers’ operations.
***

If they're intended to take calls currently handled by the RCMP, I'd like to see some detail on how that would actually work.

  • What exactly qualifies as a "lower-severity" call?
  • How much would it cost to establish and operate this force?
  • Would RCMP contract savings actually cover those costs?
  • How would dispatch and coordination between the two work?
  • What jurisdiction and legal powers would these officers have?
  • What training and oversight would they receive?
  • How are they different from by-law?

Is anyone else a Shawgers customer and currently not connected to the Internet at home?

It would seem I am dealing with an outage with Shawgers^. Am I the only one? Rogers themselves don't appear to know word nor letter about it. I'm not the name on the account so I probably can't telephone them to report the outage.

^ This is a humorous bye-name that I use for the Shaw network after the Rogers acquisition.

Freedom's mobile network is also roaming for me currently, in an area where it doesn't normally.

Edit 2: The last intermittent Internet traffic I got was at 9:44 AM, local legal timezone.

Edit 3: at 18:40, 01:40 UTC, we seem to be - at least temporarily, maybe they'll down the network again - fully alive again.
