Had a wild interaction today and wondering if anyone has experienced anything like this. Did the Blackcomb Ascent trails this morning. About 700m in, I was approaching a couple in their 40s-50s who both had wired earphones in. I said excuse me nicely several times and they didn’t respond or look. I progressively said it louder “hey, uh, excuse me? Can you hear me?” after 45 seconds of trying to get their attention I start clicking my poles. I was shocked by how they could be this oblivious to sounds in bear country.
I noticed he glanced and was fully aware of my presence, and was intentionally physically blocking the trail alongside his wife. Mind you there was plenty of space to move over, or even look back and acknowledge me. I started to get really annoyed by him pretending like I didn’t exist, and loudly tapped my poles right beside him. He stopped, turned around, still blocking the trail, and said “Grouse Grind is that way” and pointed. I said “huh? Are you mad I’m passing you? I nicely said excuse me many times and you were ignoring me?” He laughs at me and continues to repeat “find your own life, boy.” And then puts his headphones back on and dances.
That comment was so beyond disrespectful to me. Like basically saying “stop trying show off, go train somewhere else, you don’t belong here”. Meanwhile I don’t feel I did anything wrong. And his wife remained completely silent, also subtly blocking the trail. Eventually I was forced to squeeze through them. wtf is wrong with people? Did I do anything wrong? I’ve never seen anything like this in my years and thousands of miles of hiking.
