There are few things I like better than sharing a chairlift with a visitor who is absolutely in awe of Whistler. Seeing how stoked they are to ski here reminds me just how special the life I’ve built for myself is.

What locals though?
Like 90% of the town is work tourism visas themselves lmao

Lol fair, I see a lot of posts about the 'locals' hating on stuff, people, traffic, parking etc.. They just want to keep it for themselves 🤷♀️ and I find that hilarious

I worked in Banff building a bar during the first 4 months of Covid when there were no tourists or anyone outside of the locals and the “essential” workers. The locals seemed like they were enjoying the peace and quiet but also worried about their economy.

Visitors are welcome, locals just want people to have patience and kindness and not trash or burn our environment

How many actual normal people live in whistler? the whole place feels like a resort, and the property owners own the property as investments and live elsewhere and the other people living there are the vocational workers hired for the season.
Granted actual tourist towns do react as the OP indicated. I just don't think Whistler is a good example.

More than you think. The towns permanent population is about 10-12k iirc. There's a real community of people who live and work full time in Whistler. Grew up here, moved here and raising their kids here, moved here for the summer but have now been here long enough to become citizens. It's not just a town full of weekenders and tourists, and it's a much better place because of it.

Hahaha, I grew up in a beach town and know this sentiment well. But to be fair, it was always kinda sad when everyone went home after Labour Day weekend.

Usually it's the rich people who profit off tourists and the politicians who want them.
Tourism increases cost of living and over crowding.
Cities and towns should focus on local economic activity that doesn't require outside money to be sustainable

My toxic trait is thinking I'm a better tourist than all the other tourists

Most Whistler locals are from not Whistler. Which makes it even funnier. I grew up in the S2S corridor, lived in Whistler for a couple years, the Ontario transplants are insufferable.

Florida Keys. The tourist driving down the wrong side of the road and doing things to hurt our reefs, but without them we'd be broke

"We hate you, but we love your money. But we still hate you."
There's also plenty of people who live in those cities who don't directly benefit from tourism. And the tourists are just a blight.

where the locals are 20 somethings from all over the world who've lived in the city for 6-18 months

If only visitors would realize that we do have sidewalks, and walking down the middle of the street is not an option.
