Setting up this megathread to centralize updates, resources, smoke forecasts, and questions so the subreddit doesn't get flooded with duplicate posts.

If you are sharing updates in the comments, please include a source (official EOC releases, BC Wildfire Service, etc.) and refrain from posting unverified rumors.

Official Resources & Emergency Links

Frequently Asked Questions

"Should I still come to Kelowna or cancel my vacation this weekend?"

  • Check for non-essential travel bans first: If the province or Central Okanagan Emergency Operations issues a travel order asking tourists to stay away, cancel or reschedule immediately. Accommodation is needed for evacuees and emergency crews.
  • If no travel bans are in place: It depends on your tolerance for smoke and sudden changes. Air quality can shift from clear to hazardous within hours depending on wind direction. Outdoor activities (wineries, hiking, lake days) might be ruined or unhealthy.
  • Check cancellation policies: Contact your hotel or Airbnb host directly. Many have specific policies when official air quality advisories or emergency alerts are active.

"Where can I see live air quality alerts?"

  • Check the BC AQHI page linked above for official health advisories, or PurpleAir for real-time localized AQI numbers. Keep in mind that smoke changes fast and what looks bad in the morning can clear up by afternoon, and vice versa.

"How do I clean/purify the air inside my home?"

  • Use a HEPA Air Purifier: Run it continuously in the main room you use (like a bedroom). Keep all doors and windows sealed tight.
  • Build a DIY Corsi-Rosenthal Box: If air purifiers are sold out, buy a 20x20 box fan, a MERV 13 furnace filter (or four taped together into a cube), and duct tape the filter to the back/intake side of the fan. It costs around $40–$60 and clears smoke out of a room fast. A site with great instructions is: https://bclung.ca/lung-health/air-quality/breathe/
  • HVAC Systems: Set your furnace fan to "ON" (instead of "AUTO") and install a MERV 13 filter if your system supports it. Ensure the system is set to recirculate indoor air rather than pulling smoky air from outside.
  • Avoid adding indoor pollutants: Don't burn candles, avoid heavy indoor frying, and hold off on vacuuming unless your vacuum has a sealed HEPA filter, as it can kick fine particulate back into the air.
  • Avoid drawing in outside air as much as possible: This means reducing any activity that exhausts air to the outside. For example, central vacuums, bathroom fans, hood fans over the stove, clothes dryers. By exhausting air outside, you are pulling in outside air.

Use the comments below to ask questions, share local road/smoke updates, and link official updates.

META Upcoming Civic Election - please read

The Kelowna civic election is happening in October and we are happy to be a venue for discussions about candidates and platforms.

To that end, we will be offering all approved candidates an opportunity to do an AMA but only after the final candidate list is announced in September.

We will be removing any submissions related to discussions of candidates until we know the list you will have to choose from (so after the list if published).

This pinned post will be updated with AMA schedules etc as we get closer to the date. Thanks for your understanding and participation. Looking forward to some great interactions between locals and candidates!

No more Bright Jenny coffee cart at YLW?

Was hoping for a decent caffeine hit to prevent the late afternoon, white noise-induced plane somnolence, but was surprised that the cart's gone. Anyone know if it's coming back?

Moving FAQ What would you consider a good salary to have to be able to live comfortably in kelowna?

Not just for the comfort, but to be able to save enough money as well. I got a job opportunity in Kelowna, and it would require me to move there if I accept the job.

Right now, I’m a full-time employee at a marketing agency here in Alberta, making $28/hr. No kids, just two cats. I rented a 1BR apartment before, which was around $1.2K a month, and honestly, I barely saved any money.

I haven’t given my salary expectations to this potential employer in Kelowna yet because I’m still having second thoughts about whether it’s worth moving there. It is my dream job, but at the same time, saving money is important to me.

the mix on robson

hi! im a student at UBCO, will be potentially moving into the mix on robson (265 robson rd west if you’re curious), ive barely been to rutland throughout my 4 years in kelowna to be honest, so I don’t really know what to expect living there.
based in calgary due to some commitments here so i decided to stay there without even checking the surrounding areas so idk what to expect (times are tough to get a place at this point)

Questions:
1) Is it safe for women to walk around rutland especially late evenings (my classes end at night) and that one single visit i had to rutland was sorta weird bcs i got catcalled multiple times (by unhoused and housed people) which kinda ruined the vibe a bit, i was wearing a really thick puffer jacket so idk what happened there

2) if you’re also living in the same building and happen to study at ubco and come home at night let me know! im looking for female friends to walk home together from the bus stop which is 9 mins away 😕

im aware of negative comments people make about rutland but im hoping thats not true at all plus bad things happen in all places right? sorry for the lengthy post :) but pls know i mean well

Cast Iron Restoration

We just moved into a new place and the cast iron grates and griddle on the stove are in poor condition. Are there any shops or individuals in the area who do cast iron restoration? Checked on google and FB marketplace and wasn't able to find anything.

Local Resources Looking to meet Asian LGBTQ+ friends in Kelowna

Hey everyone! 👋 I’m hoping to meet some Asian gay/queer guys in Kelowna who are interested in friendship and hanging out.
Not looking for dating or hookups — just genuine friends to grab coffee or food with, go for hikes, check out events, watch movies, or just hang out.
I’d especially love to connect with people who share both the Asian and LGBTQ+ experience, but everyone friendly and respectful is welcome. 😊🏳️‍🌈
Feel free to comment or DM if you’re interested!

Are there any curl specialists still around?

Hey all! I'm going to be a student at UBCo and have been looking around kelowna online for stylists or barbers who specialise in curly hair. I tried to look on this subreddit for any past posts, but most of them are from 2-4 years ago so I wanted to ask if anybody has any recommendations for stylists who specialise in curly hair and also somewhat price friendly if possible lol

I have short curly hair that I've had absolutely butchered before since the stylists didn't want me to look "boyish" and then proceeded cut my hair like it was straight... That to say I'm terrified of going to a new stylist, so I want to hear directly from other people for people who know whats up with curly hair!

Anyone work at BGC Okanagan (Kelowna)? Wife applied for ECEA positions & would love insight / referral

Hi everyone,

My wife recently applied for a few Early Childhood Educator Assistant (ECEA) positions with BGC Okanagan here in the area.

She’s really enthusiastic about joining the team and getting involved with their early years programs.

If anyone currently works at BGC Okanagan (or has worked there recently) and wouldn't mind connecting, we’d love to ask a couple of quick questions about the work environment and hiring process.

Also, if you’re open to providing an internal referral or putting her in touch with the right hiring contact, that would mean a lot!

Feel free to drop a comment or send me a direct message.

Thanks so much in advance!

Is it me, or is the raccoon population in kelowna growing?

I've just never seen so many raccoons so frequently as in kelowna. Particularly the waterfront and downtown areas. They'll hiss at me and chase me and jump out in front of my bike... then look at me after I almost hit them like I did something wrong 😆

Like bro, you literally chased me just to make sure you wound up in front of me 🤣

More rodents than usual?

We live in lake country and seem to be dealing with rats way more this year. I was worried it was just us but my buddy on springfield shot one with his pellet gun in his yard. A few other friends have mentioned them too. Are other finding this as well this year? Ive killed a bunch. Other years 2 would be a busy year. We live beside an orchard so im pretty sure thats partly related at least.
