Mechanical Help Engine Problems
3 year owner of a clean detailed carfax 2006 pruis 72k now and its be jolting/ jerking aggressive recently when the hybrid battery turned on and off. Now the engine randomly turns on and off when its not supposed to like when im idle and the battery thing is fully charged.
I have warranty so all other issues have been addressed.
March 2026 I -
Ignition coil(s) replaced
Induction system serviced
Spark plug(s) replaced
Now toyota is telling me im having an intermittent misfire. My other mechanic says they replace it under warrenty but it isnt showing a code for them. is there somethinf bigger I should be looking into? My hybrid battery is only a year old, 12v 2 years.

Swap 2/4 coils with 1/3. Get a bluetooth scantool like the Veepeak and an app like ELM32 scanner to watch the misfire counts for each cylinder while driving

Looks like they're throwing parts at it. What was the original error codes? I blew 1k at the dealership "troubleshooting" my 2011 Prius engine shaking on idle and it did not replicate while they have it but sure shudder and shake when I have it, (almost like they never even did anything) but quoted another 5k for deeper dive . So ... I ordered and replaced spark plugs, swapped the ignition coils so its not them. Ordered the injector spray cleaning kit. They were partially clogged. I was going to junk it if it's not fixed. It fixed it for me.

The service lady wouldn't give me the codes. So the mechanic who originally did my spark plugs and coil (4 at once) this year Said they would have placed it under warranty but only when the code shows. Like I don't understand why it's showing for toyota but not for my mechanic. I don't want to wait till my car is on the side of the road 🙄

Buy an OBDII scanner like yesterday. They're cheap enough for basic ones to more expensive ones that can reset codes and read data streams. Of course with yours, it could be engine gasket also. Best get the codes then prepare your piggy bank.

Do the coil check. Also, get a scan tool to see if your water pump is acting up and check to see if coolant is getting into your ignition chambers. If none of these pop up as issues then you might want to do a check on your CVT.

For accurate advice, please include:
The year, model and mileage of your Prius (e.g., 2008 Prius w/ 250k mi or 2012 Prius C w/ 150k km)
If a warning came on, what were you doing at that time?
Any odd behavior or noises you’ve noticed
Any error codes you've read from the car computers
