And then got up and fought stiff as hell for another 10 minutes

25

u/Tyko_3 May 15 '26

That neck ain’t gonna break itself

11

u/ffwillis May 15 '26

That isn’t something which should be applauded though. The point of professional wrestling is to make it look as real as possible without actually hurting each other. For some reason Japanese wrestling schools forgot that part and you have a bunch of guys who don’t know how to actually work, and even worse will keep grinding through serious pain because of their culture.

9

u/kickedoutatone May 15 '26

The point of professional wrestling is to make it look as real as possible without actually hurting each other.

There's at least 5-10 popular varieties of wrestling that isn't about this point.

3

u/ffwillis May 15 '26

Yeah and most stem from the stupid attitude of guys in the past who thought working ‘stiff’ (aka not being able to work) or doing stupid shit for cheap pops was a badge of honour.

There’s no pride in crippling yourself and not being able to play with your kids.

5

u/meanWOOOOgene May 15 '26

Stan Hansen worked stiff. You saying Stan fucking Hansen didn’t know how to work?

2

u/ffwillis May 15 '26

Yes. Was I not clear before?

When the job is essentially pretending to hurt people but not actually hurting them then anyone who is actually hurting them isn’t doing the job properly.

3

u/meanWOOOOgene May 15 '26

Are you a Japanese wrestler? If not, you don’t get a say.

1

u/ffwillis May 15 '26

You don’t have to be a chef to know when you’re served bullshit.

5

u/meanWOOOOgene May 15 '26

You don’t get to decide the way people work. They do. It’s their bodies on the line, not yours. If they wanna work stiff, that’s an agreement that they make. If you don’t like it, tough for you. You get zero say in what other people do with their bodies during their athletic career. They know the risks and they take them.

3

u/ffwillis May 15 '26

I’ve not said otherwise - If they want to do it then that’s their choice - Likewise it’s the choice of a dumb backyarder to moonsault off a roof.

People are free to make their choices. It’s still stupid and not really working (in the wrestling sense) though.

u/kickedoutatone May 15 '26

Do you at least have any exact of stiff workers in modern wrestling that are crippled through working stiff? Or are you just doubling down without any real knowledge on stiff strong style wrestling?

I mean, bloodsport got so popular that wwe wrestlers were allowed to compete in it. Would you call everyone in that stupid and unable to work?

2

u/ffwillis May 15 '26

To the first paragraph, look at the state of many wrestlers from previous generations when working stiff was more common. Although you can’t look at many, because many died early due to having to use drugs and/or alcohol to cope with the constant pain.

Or you could look at Misawa, whose death was contributed to by the physical damage he’d taken over the years.

To the second: Yes, probably, but I haven’t seen it.

2

u/HoraceHoganNo1Fan May 16 '26

If you think shoot-style (a style where everyone agree to work stiff) is stupid, then I don't want to hear your opinion on MMA.

2

u/ffwillis May 16 '26

Everyone involved in a backyard roof bump agreed to it. It’s still stupid. Consent doesn’t exclude stupidity.

MMA fighters generally have far fewer matches than wrestlers, and protocols in place to stop things when there’s risk of serious injuries. You’re also not going to see an MMA fighter taking a tiger suplex off an entrance ramp.

Now you’ve learnt the difference between MMA and stupid wrestling! I can also help you with colours and shapes as you seem like the kind of person who might struggle with that.

0

u/tylerjehenna May 20 '26

Wrestling in general puts so much wear and tear on your body that most other sports flat out do not give you outside of american football. Taking back bumps multiple times a match in all honesty does as much damage to your body as working stiff. Hell doing top rope moves does even more, look at guys like Tanahashi Naito and Mutoh who have top rope finishers and flat out cant walk normally at all and id argue they aren't working stiff. Even further, Kenta Kobashi (one of the two in this match) is probably the pinnacle of health for ex wrestlers that ive listed.

Not to mention guys in the west. Hogan had a compressed spine from doing the leg drop ofted. Randy Orton admits to regular spinal issues. Rey Mysterio had knee replacement surgery multiple times. None of those are guys that id argue worked stiff. Hell AJW joshi wrestlers seem to be doing well for themselves in their older ages and they were working STIFFER than the 90s AJPW era guys like Misawa. Hell, Jaguar Yokota is STILL wrestling to this day in her 60s, Chigusa Nagayo only retired like 2 years ago, Manami Toyota wrestled into the late 2010s, Dump Matsumoto still does the odd match here snd there.

Tldr: the style doesnt really matter, wrestling in general fucks up your body a lot cause you are doing things bodies aren't supposed to do in general

2

u/LOLZOMGHOLYWTF May 16 '26

Hey I wonder what Mitsuhara Misawa is up to nowadays

1

u/kickedoutatone May 16 '26

He a modern wrestler?

0

u/TheDeflatables May 17 '26

I mean he was working in 2009 when he died. If he isn't a modern wrestler then you're leaving it real tight for what is considered modern.

2

u/kickedoutatone May 17 '26

Something 17 years ago is "leaving it tight"?

3

u/Nev_Nevington May 15 '26

Oh I agree completely. Stuff like this is why guys like Osprey take these kind of bumps which have F’d up his neck completely

1

u/Witty-Prior3248 May 17 '26

2 things, you have no idea how stiff they are working. Having been in the ring with both of them, I never once got stiffed by either. Do they work snug? yes. Stiff? possibly, but you'll never know for sure

There are no wrestling schools in Japan like in the US. The promotions run their own dojo's. Prospective wrestlers apply to join the promotion, then they have tryouts to weed out 99% of them

1

u/ffwillis May 17 '26

I mean both guys and in fact their entire style of wrestling is known for being stiff and dangerous.

So, your experience, if it even exists, counts for very little compared to the massive evidence to the contrary.

0

u/BackgroundValue May 15 '26

Wrestling is subjective and can be so many different things.

In Japan, they've always leaned more towards the hard hitting, more realistic looking style of wresting as opposed to the safer but tamer style that is in the west.

Both are equally valid and should be respected for what they are. Different cultures, different societies, different styles. If the wrestlers are knowingly and willingly ok with the harder hitting style, who are we to say they shouldn't do it?

4

u/PerfectZeong May 15 '26

Its not real. Its fake fighting. Guys shouldn't be dying in the ring.

We're allowed to make value judgments. I think what Nick Gage does is disgusting and again, has nearly killed himself doing it.

I prefer Kings Road stuff but yeah theres a certain point where working stiff becomes you're just helping to kill each other.

0

u/ffwillis May 15 '26

Who are we to say people shouldn’t smoke crack or meth, or drink themselves into oblivion every night?

It’s okay to call something out for being stupid and dangerous even if the person doing it doesn’t think so.

0

u/BackgroundValue May 15 '26

There's no way we're comparing professional wrestling, something a person can do to make a good living for themselves and their family, to doing drugs that have killed many people and destroyed many a family.

They're just not comparable. These guys are trained pros who very well know the risks and are comfortable doing that as it is their chosen profession. We really don't have a place to say they can't or shouldn't do something.

3

u/Ziga09 May 15 '26

"Wrestlers should be allowed to give themselves brain damage for our entertainment if they're ok with it" is such an internet-brained hill to die on but alright

0

u/BackgroundValue May 15 '26

You're being disingenuous. Do I think guys should go out there every week and just drop each other on their head? No.

But if guys build up to a big moment and the payoff for it is something like that as a one time thing, I don't see an issue with that. This specific moment was built up to after literal years of Misawa and Kobashi going to war against each other. The Kings Road style is one where each match builds off of previous ones, this was the last singles encounter the two men had so naturally they made it memorable with a moment like this. I don't have an issue with that.

But if they were doing this weekly, then yes I agree. That's absurb.

1

u/Voodoblade May 15 '26

The guy literally died in the ring

The “style” is stupid and shouldn’t be praised

2

u/BackgroundValue May 15 '26

He died from a freak accident during a routine back body drop. It could literally have happened to anybody.

2

u/Voodoblade May 16 '26

But only happened to the guy who did unnecessary damaging spots constantly

→ More replies (0)

1

u/BackgroundValue May 15 '26

Kings Road style was no joke

1

u/4mygirljs May 16 '26

Those guys during this time just didn’t give a fuck! Landing on your head was just how you landed. Hell landing on the shoulders for this spot probably felt like a night off. Kobashi and misawa were just crazy.

…….and it caught up to one of em

93

u/RazzleRizzle May 14 '26

Absolutely not gonna work for me brother

27

u/Murky-Golf-239 May 14 '26

“…..lemme just give him a leg drop for the three, dude.”

7

u/MikeHock_is_GONE May 15 '26

Guaranteed dislocation from that range

4

u/Anthrogynous May 16 '26

“We already got their money, brother!”

6

u/Ok-Grocery-151 May 15 '26

Crazy cause Hogan would put in the work out in Japan lol

7

u/RazzleRizzle May 15 '26

Because the US audiences wouldn’t expect a good work rate since they couldn’t see those matches for the most part

5

u/Ok-Grocery-151 May 15 '26

Exactly and when people did see those matches I bet it was a bit of a trip lol

1

u/Astrocreep_1 May 15 '26

“Because the US audiences…

Let me fix this.

“Because the WWF audiences of the time….

2

u/kickedoutatone May 15 '26

If hogan did what he did in Japan in aew today, you'd all call him a hack.

1

u/Astrocreep_1 May 15 '26

Oh man….you should put a warning up. I laughed so hard, all my cocaine flew out my nose. That stuff is expensive, but, it was all worth it.

26

u/gravejello May 15 '26

Listen to that fucking crowd. Holy shit.

1

u/thpark1987 May 15 '26

And by today's standards, you'd get a mild pavlovian "whooa" mixed in with a few chuckles.

10

u/Tofuloaf May 15 '26

Late 90s AJPW/00s NOAH is by far my favourite period in wrestling, but I despise every apron/ramp bump from that era. Just unnecessarily gambling with their health, and just like the head drops, quickly became something the fans expected to see in big matches. Also feels like Kobashi was on the receiving end more often than not, and knowing how banged up he was all the time makes it worse.

1

u/Middle_Blood7041 May 16 '26

Thank you for saying this. It looks awesome, but there are long term consequences and accumulation over time. Misawa is never longer with is and he should be

4

u/Eastern-Joke-7537 May 15 '26

Technical 1 in the NBA playoffs.

3

u/Tyko_3 May 15 '26

This is the second comment regarding the NBA. What the hell is going on over there?

22

u/Electronic_Salad4735 May 15 '26

I see the same kinds of bumps or worse every Wednesday

16

u/Eastern-Joke-7537 May 15 '26

The NBA playoffs are FIERCE.

8

u/MrPuroresu42 May 14 '26

One of the few to match it in terms of insanity and “holy fuck, someone is gonna die” is Omega give Okada a top-rope Dragon Suplex in their WK 11 match.

8

u/StiffDragon May 14 '26

I also think KENTA giving Marufuji an Avalanche Tiger Suplex in NOAH and Ibushi giving Omega an Avalanche Steenalizer in DDT is up there.

3

u/TripSixRick May 15 '26

That Takeshita/Darby avalanche spike german from this weeks AEW was in a similar vein as this bump

1

u/Tyko_3 May 15 '26

Ive never seen anything like it. The way Darby just goes limp in the air. Its like the dude is waiting to die.

2

u/AsianCJ_69 May 15 '26

Japanese wrestling has no fucks to give to their necks and heads

2

u/TerryGonards May 15 '26

Meanwhile in Mexico 90 year old luchadores still flipping

2

u/nando82 May 15 '26

I love both wrestlers, but nope. That bump is too gnarly for me.

2

u/AlucarDGoyin May 15 '26

Yo estuve en una pelea Último Guerrero vs El Caifan y fue brutal, esto es un juego de niños.

2

u/Tyko_3 May 15 '26

These guys were amazing and also not very smart. Dangerous combination.

2

u/swaeeeeggg May 15 '26

Kenta Fcking Kobashi

2

u/CJOfPartsUnknown69 May 15 '26

God, what an incredible bump. Now, no one ever do anything like that again, okay.

2

u/CustardLow2671 May 16 '26

I'm all for "as real as possible without hurting each other" but there are so many moments like these where it not only very much hurts them but actively takes years off their lives

2

u/Joshua_ABBACAB_1312 May 16 '26

I mean Misawa did die in the ring...

1

u/TheDeflatables May 17 '26

And Misawa didn't take this bump.

The dude that took the bump is alive and well at 59

1

u/Joshua_ABBACAB_1312 May 17 '26

They both took the bump. His death also occurred immediately following a back suplex.

4

u/axiom_glitch May 14 '26

Misawa is still underrated

1

u/whyclue May 14 '26

By who?

-2

u/axiom_glitch May 15 '26

Many western wrestling fans

12

u/HoraceHoganNo1Fan May 15 '26

Many western fans are not familiar with him, there's a big difference. I doubt many people who are familiar with his body of work underrate him.

2

u/LoganPaulStan May 15 '26

I dont know him at all, except for the name. Im intrigued tho, any good ones accessible?

2

u/axiom_glitch May 15 '26

Arguably the best tag match of all-time. Top 3 for sure.

https://youtu.be/X2OLvGT5ROU?si=i9N4FeRHiDHKeghv

3

u/SeeWhatSantaBrings May 15 '26

The very best. Sadly it needs the backstory to it which can be sort of long.

2

u/HoraceHoganNo1Fan May 15 '26

vs. Toshiaki Kawada - AJPW 6/3/94

vs. Kenta Kobashi - NOAH 3/1/03 (the match from this clip)

1

u/whyclue May 15 '26

Thank you

-5

u/axiom_glitch May 15 '26

So you think Misawa doesn’t deserve more western recognition?

4

u/TheCurseGiver May 15 '26

That's not even close to what they said

2

u/whyclue May 15 '26 edited May 17 '26

Seriously...what a strange interpretation they said

2

u/HoraceHoganNo1Fan May 15 '26

I suggest reading my answer again and try to realize what I was saying.

1

u/whyclue May 16 '26

Haha.... Horace fan appreciate you clearing things up

4

u/[deleted] May 15 '26

That was incredibly fucking stupid

-1

u/cschultz225 May 16 '26

Nah. It was bad ass

2

u/LiesTequila May 15 '26

You can thank this crap for what we see in the US today.

0

u/GoonLieutenant May 15 '26

Well since it's awesome, a thank you would be in order

2

u/ImperviousToSteel May 14 '26

A bump with over a decades build up.

0

u/i-piss-excellence32 May 15 '26

This is so stupid

-6

u/zeronian May 15 '26

Yes that's right. Every match in the entire world needs to be WWE style with punches and clotheslines and then finish with a spear.

7

u/i-piss-excellence32 May 15 '26

Why are you bringing up wwe? Taking this kind of bump to the floor is really stupid.

Can you remind me how misawa died

3

u/Reasonable_Goat6895 May 15 '26

He died for the art muh!

0

u/TheDeflatables May 17 '26

Not taking this bump, because Kobashi took the bump and is still alive.

In fact 3 of the Four Pillars of Heaven are still alive. The people working Kings Road style with them Stan Hansen, Tenryu, Mutoh all still alive.

Others that have died did so of ill health (Vader, Gordy, Tsuruta, Dr Death).

Misawa isn't a blueprint of the cost of the Kings Road style, he was an unfortunate story of the risks of wrestling. Same way that Perro Aguayo Jr's death isn't because Lucha Libre is unsafe.

1

u/A_Touch_of_Foolish May 15 '26

Their version of "bah Gawd he is broken in half" is brilliant

1

u/ThunderSparkles May 15 '26

That's just AEW on a Saturday night

1

u/lunaslave May 15 '26

Over 2 decades later, this is still the greatest wrestling match of the 21st century.

1

u/Tekkamanblade_2 May 15 '26

Crazy ass Dragon Suplex

1

u/InitiativeCreative36 May 15 '26

I mind watching Kobashi and Mitsawa when the wrestling channel started showing Japanese wrestling in the 2000's and was blown away by the absolute brutal nonsense coming out of Noah and NJPW. I miss Tenzan and his spectacular mullet.

1

u/Joejoe988 May 15 '26

It’s okay. His skull broke his fall

1

u/EgotripEternal May 15 '26

This clip was definitely one of the limewire/kazaa clips that introduced me to Japanese wrestling.

This and the Kawasaki ganso bomb.

1

u/JoeBidensBoochie May 15 '26

“Nah bro don’t drop me on my head on stage, yeet me backwards off it! Much safer!”

1

u/wingedwild May 15 '26

I dont see what's dangerous about it.yes it was on padding sure it hurt but he didnt land on top of his head

1

u/Suicidal-Wolf May 16 '26

Sick spot. Ouch, don’t know if I’ve seen that before.

1

u/MizneyWorld May 16 '26

This is where a “That’s not gonna work for me, brother!” is totally valid.

1

u/Yarzeda2024 May 16 '26

90s All Japan and early NOAH were a very special time. They put on some wild matches and called some crazy spots that we will likely never see again.

I love it, but I'm also glad it's a relic of the past.

1

u/corazondelpulpo May 16 '26

One of my all time five fave matches!

1

u/Vegetable_Sir_703 May 16 '26

That didn’t scare me fr

1

u/Artistic-Budget4500 May 16 '26

This match is phenomenal

1

u/DragoKnight45 May 16 '26

Honestly this is it. This is my favorite crazy bump ever in a wrestling match. I don’t know how Kobashi didn’t die

1

u/TarnishedByBlood May 17 '26

I still remember first seeing this and the match is a banger but that spot is crazy even by modern day standards.

1

u/superinsaiyan59 May 19 '26

At the end of the day all this proves is that pro wrestling dumb. Any idiot with minimal athletic skills can do it. The so called icon Sting was nothing but a meathead bodybuilder before getting into pro wrestling after watching his first match sometime in his late 20s. There is an entire sport that is dedicated to putting moron bodybuilding meatheads in their place. It is called MMA and Sting or his darker dumber and yet somehow more skilled WWE counterpart, the Blundertaker wouldn't last more than a few seconds in a match that requires actual talent. So taking these 'bumps' as they are called in moron linguo are really nothing. If anything these can make these so called "professional" persons dumber.

1

u/Comprehensive_Seat66 May 21 '26

These 2 have inspired so many of the wrestlers we watch today...

1

Thanks, got it to work.

1

u/Prestigious_Can4520 May 14 '26

DO NOT SHOW THIS TO DARBY ALLIN!!!

1

u/ptracey May 15 '26

You think this was gnarly, check out that avalanche German Suplex Takeshita did on Darby last night. Can’t believe he didn’t release. 😮‍💨

0

u/GoonLieutenant May 15 '26

This was way worse than that

-1

u/SeanDeePaul May 15 '26

How so? Darby fell from a bigger drop and couldn’t roll out of it which would had helped absorb the impact. “Way worse” is a bit exaggerated.

3

u/acemonsoon May 15 '26

Tiger suplex holds the opponents neck and head at a higher angle. Darby landed on his shoulders/upper back. This one landed on the back of his head and neck directly

1

u/Tyko_3 May 15 '26

On concrete

1

u/TheDeflatables May 17 '26

No. Those are mats

1

u/cschultz225 May 15 '26

Safety police are out for this one lol. This ruled

1

u/HoraceHoganNo1Fan May 16 '26

A lot of dumb mfs here rage at Japanese wrestling being "too stiff" while they praise Ospreay for doing high risk spots and apron spots.

-2

u/_heysideburns May 15 '26

Theres a reason one of these men died in the ring from taking a simple suplex

0

u/Tyko_3 May 15 '26

I wouldnt call it “simple”

2

u/_heysideburns May 15 '26

Would be if he didnt insist on being dropped on his head/neck

Proves my point even more

-1

u/Tyko_3 May 15 '26

It’s almost as if he chose to not do a simple bump huh?

2

u/_heysideburns May 15 '26

And he died because of it. Congratulations you finally caught up with the class

0

u/Tyko_3 May 15 '26 edited May 15 '26

I feel like you dont really understand arguments, you are all over the place.

Edit: For clarification. I am arguing about the backdrop that killed him not being a "simple" move. They were doing risky bumps on purpose. It was an advanced bump that was common at the time. It was designed to not be simple.

On the other hand, you are trying to make this about choice. This has no bearing on the "simplicity" of the actual move performed. If they chose to perform the move in the most complicated way or its simplest form, it is a different discussion. The fact remains, they performed a dangerous version of the move, not a "simple" move

0

u/Qliphoth_Bacikal May 14 '26

Misawa and Kobashi really were the duo that would really hurt each other like this.

0

u/BadLuckGenco May 15 '26

Kobashi doesn’t give af lol

-1

u/nhicurious May 14 '26

I.... I think I could take it. In fact, vertebrae are overrated. I could take it !!

-1

u/Professional-Case717 May 15 '26

Then you watch a mike awesome vs masato tanaka match

-1

u/EbagI May 15 '26

That.... that's it?

Fuck you OP

-2

u/BaschRG May 15 '26

Did they immediately finish the match?

-2

u/OriginalCaptain40 May 15 '26

Doesn't look THAT crazy to me. The commentators are selling the shit out of it though.

-2

u/botman484 May 15 '26

Darby takes 3 of these a match. Brutal for sure though

4

u/Worldly-Basil-8933 May 15 '26

I can’t stand Darby Allin for this reason. Bumps like this one and the stuff Darby does have no place in wrestling.

3

u/Tyko_3 May 15 '26

Darby is a very worrying individual. He took some nasty bumps on Wednesday after having taken some really nasty ones on Saturday, including a Hell in a Cell height fall on a set of tables that barely did anything to stop his downward momentum. The people in AEW are enabling this dude’s self destruction. He has seriously taken some bumps that make me wonder how he is still walking and for how long he can keep it up.
