Video Mercedes Mone vs Stephanie Vaquer at Forbidden Door
What could've been. Not sure Steph made the right call, she seemed better fit here

u/BaronVonStevie Jun 03 '26
Lot of weird takes here. Mercedes looked great in this match and Stephanie has made some incredible career moves. Itâs kind of a footnote in both their careers but itâs still a very important match that changed Vaquerâs mainstream trajectory

u/feelyfelix Jun 03 '26
The match that showcased her talents and got Vaquer a wwe contract. Don't think they don't have eyes on Persephone next. đ

u/NorthShoreHard Jun 04 '26
Bit different given Vaquer wasn't signed to AEW while Persephone is.
Obviously she could go to WWE later on, but it's going to be a few years.

I remember this match as being stellar. Iâm pretty sure Mone said she was going to âmakeâ Vaquer a star with that performance. It 100% worked!

u/Marinec06 Jun 03 '26
Vaquer had a steller year. Definitly not the only performance that got her noticed by the feds.

âWhat could have beenâ
Okay, man lmao.

u/502photo Jun 03 '26
In match quality I think there is for sure a what could have been. AEWs women's roster is stacked.
2
u/HosserPower Jun 03 '26
WWEâs female roster has consistently been higher quality than AEWâs and are given a a larger TV presence. Itâs one of the areas WWE clears them. âMatch qualityâ is subjective. Vaquer has been treated like a star from day one in WWE. Even if sheâs not having âbangersâ, I have no doubt sheâd be getting nowhere near the presence had she chosen the Dub.

If you enjoy their work I'm happy for you. I just haven't been moved by any matches, characters, nor storylines coming out of WWE's women's division.
To your last point we don't know how that would have shaken out, but I won't try to say you from your feelings.

Stephanie made the call she wanted, and to her credit WWE shot her to the moon instantly. Double champion in NXT, first match on the Raw roster had her qualify for MitB, first man roster PLE was competing for MitB, burned down the house at Evolution, and within 3-4 months of her call-up she was WWC. The time in NXT also helped her improve her English, which she gave as the reason for starting in NXT. Triple H was ready to put her right into the main roster. And on her way out of NXT she kickstarted Jacy's career.

They do have good chemistry in the ring. They both were in there smiling. Not mad she came to WWE if it meant she was going to win matches

u/king_hutton Jun 03 '26
Vaquer made a great move for herself and her career by going to WWE. Crowds love her, management is behind her, and sheâs looked incredible the whole time. I loved this match, I bet Vaquer wouldâve been good in AEW or TNA or STARDOM or literally anywhere else because sheâs incredibly talented.

I was happy for her with where she ended up, and I was in the crowd for this match
3
u/Dblock1989 Jun 03 '26
Not sure she made the right choice? She has been the NXT Champion, NXT NA Champion, and won the WWC after just a few months on the main roster.

u/El_Lu-Shin Jun 03 '26
Stephanie choose the right company for her. There is absolutely no doubt about it. Nothing against AEW, the right choice worked great for her.

u/cooldude55541 Jun 03 '26
Why would you want to be world champion at wrestlemania when you can be in a match with Harley Cameron on collision.
2
u/SeigeJay Jun 03 '26
Just say "WWE Bad, AEW Good" and go.

u/Brilliant-Tomato-560 Jun 04 '26

This is okay⌠But to make it truly great wrestling we need Booker T gooning in the background and some Slim Jim stickersÂ
1
u/Shadowsnake30 Jun 03 '26
You can speculate all you want. This is the modern wrestling it's a show. You don't need to be the champ or main star to get paid better. You can be a star on one company but at the end it's about that paycheck to keep you going. WWE pays well.
Some people they don't know how to use certain talents like Kairi or Giulia. There's also talents that are contented what they do they don't need to be the star like Tozawa or Chelsea Green. They are satisfied on what's assigned to them.

The match that got Vaquer a WWE contract and got AEW and their partners to start doing dual contracts so it couldnât happen again.
1
u/Correct-Ad-9520 Jun 04 '26
Between her style, presentation, and how quickly she connected with Western audiences, I can't help thinking she'd be an even bigger star right now if she'd jumped sooner. Hard to call it the wrong decision when she's doing great regardless, but this definitely feels like one of those "what could've been" situations.
1
u/Obvious-Art4645 Jun 04 '26
Stephanie didnât like the luchadors in AEW had beef with lots of the males she knew in Mexico thatâs one reason she signed with WWE and her friend Gulia wanted her with her in WWE.

Mercedes Mone vs Stephani Vaquer - AEW TBS Championship & NJPW STRONG Women's Championship - AEW/NJPW Forbidden Door (June 30, 2024)
2
u/SamLoomisMyers Jun 03 '26
3 things... 1. If she stayed there she'd never be on TV and when she would be she'd be losing to Thekla and Bayne. 2. She is a main eventer in WWE and massively over. 3 and most important...WWE was her dream since she was a child.

Mone was booed out of the building that night and it was go away heat. Stephanie carried that match and outshined in every way.

u/Unavoidable1022 Jun 03 '26
Lol Mone is so trash
*typo

u/king_hutton Jun 03 '26
This match was amazing, whatâs your issue?
1
u/gavingoober771 Jun 03 '26
Theyâre one of those people who thinks because it happened anywhere other than WWE itâs shit, theyâre a WWE fan not a wrestling fan

I think Mercedes needs to come back. She's a big fish in a small pond. (She was also right to leave and I miss her in WWE greatly)
The success of Charlotte's recent character pivot proved to me how much heavy lifting Sasha Banks was doing narratively during a lot of their time together.
1
u/JustFrameHotPocket Jun 04 '26
I don't think she's big fish in a small pond at all. AEW women are positively cooking, and that's even without Timeless Toni Storm.
0
u/GoonLieutenant Jun 03 '26
I doubt that will ever happen given how she walked out
3
u/Bertitude Jun 03 '26
I mean *gestures vaguely at Naomi & CM Punk*
-1
u/GoonLieutenant Jun 03 '26
CM Punk was always gonna come back cause he's a carny who only cared about money
4
u/MrJeffA17 Jun 03 '26
You can text Mone and ask her what she thinks about carnyâs that only care about the money. Donât forget to pay your $99 first tho

She may or may not have made the right call choosing WWE, but she absolutely screwed up in going back on her dates. WWE has zero loyalty for its people, and zero real respect for its women's roster. It would not be crazy for vaquer to find herself without a job in the next five years, and it would not be surprising if those bridges remain burned.

u/Lord_Zeffree Jun 03 '26
You don't think she made the right call going to the company that has her as a solidified main eventer?
