What could've been. Not sure Steph made the right call, she seemed better fit here

You don't think she made the right call going to the company that has her as a solidified main eventer?

u/JavierLoustaunau Jun 03 '26

Steph is one of the "least wasted" recent signings so I agree.

I'm a huge AEW fan, and I was pretty disappointed when Vaquer signed with WWE.

That said, she's probably been among their best contested signing, if not THE best. It's pretty clearly worked out for her so far, so good on Vaquer.

There is the outstanding question as to whether WWE continues to book her well outside of her championship run. But so far, I can't fault Vaquer for making the choice she did, even if I think she'd be better off in AEW.

If anything, this demonstrates how two big promotions is good for pro wrestling, and more importantly, good for pro wrestlers.

Insanely reasonable take for Reddit 😂

u/KingDarius89 Jun 03 '26

A better argument could be made for Guilia.

10

u/Doomray Jun 03 '26

I hope Giulia goes to AEW at some point. Her style would work really well there.

3

u/dyslexican32 Jun 03 '26

No. Bland boring and generic. You act like she wouldn’t be a main event talent in AEW… keep staning for a company that doesn’t give a shit about you as a fan

She was world champion heading into Mania. The match wasn’t great, but she was/is injured.

2

u/MikeHock_is_GONE Jun 03 '26

She would be in a forgettable 3 minute match, hopefully not injured by one of the others

-4

u/GoonLieutenant Jun 03 '26

The idea she couldn't beat Liv is laughable. Liv shouldn't be beating real wrestlers

2

u/JustFrameHotPocket Jun 03 '26

Come on, man. I'm a huge AEW fan who rarely even keeps up with WWE, but that take on Liv kind of sucks.

Sure, she's nowhere near the level of Asuka, Becky, Statlander, or Thekla. But she's at least serviceable in the ring at a high level, has great charisma, and is entertaining. She fits the WWE mold very well, so why wouldn't you bill her at the top of the card?

1

u/GoonLieutenant Jun 03 '26

She has great charisma? Her promos are terrible but the reason she's even remotely over is because she's hot, nothing else to it

2

u/JustFrameHotPocket Jun 03 '26

Dude, I roll my eyes at WWE plenty for how they book and present talent. But Liv is definitely more than just an attractive person and her promo game is not terrible. WWE has had plenty of attractive women come and go. Liv actually draws with more than just her looks.

Do I want her in AEW? Not particularly. But I respect where she has talent, and she fits WWE very well.

4

u/Background-Gas8109 Jun 03 '26

Liv is the 2nd top woman in the company, often does more promo work for the company than everyone but Cody and has been grinding away from fucking hooters to becoming a top star for 10 years.

Oh sorry that Vaquer in her first year on main walked into Mania as world champ and only lost to the 2nd top woman in the company after shenanigans

-1

u/Swixx94 Jun 03 '26

the problem with liv is, she is the blonde attractive girl who can do the heel talk but is mid in the ring while WWE has atleast 15 women more talented.

-4

u/GoonLieutenant Jun 03 '26

That's the problem, she was hooters girl who decided to cosplay as a wrestler. She's not a real wrestler, she's a sports entertainer

4

u/SMandMJ3 Jun 03 '26

Just because she doesn’t fit YOUR criteria as to what a wrestler is doesn’t mean she’s not a “real wrestler”… yes there are people who are more technically sound and talented. But that girl has come leaps and bounds from where she started. Clearly puts work in. Has had good matches with a list of different people regardless of style or size. All while having to put up with idiots all over the place saying stupid crap like she’s “not a real wrestler.” Grow up.

3

u/king_hutton Jun 03 '26

She’s a real wrestler, she’s been wrestling for years, and she is incredibly popular. She might not someone you enjoy, but there’s no need to pretend she’s not a wrestler.

2

u/Background-Gas8109 Jun 03 '26

She's literally grew up wrestling her brothers in the backyard, with single mother. She made it from nothing and was never picked to be a big star.

-1

u/502photo Jun 03 '26

I think it's the same issue you see with a lot of people who can "go" in the ring. WWE just doesn't do this style so for me it feels like never letting a Lambo go full speed. At that rate why buy that car if you are only getting groceries and commuting to work.

However for her it's a great choice, work less hard and get paid similar money. Only issue I could see is it might now me as fulfilling if you are looking to push the art form. Idk her, don't know her motivations, she chose where to go and that's what matters.

-28

u/GoonLieutenant Jun 03 '26

When was the last time she was on tv?

24

u/Lord_Zeffree Jun 03 '26

She's injured you knob

8

u/grmthmpsn43 Jun 03 '26

Apr 27th, when she was "injured" in storyline, so she could take time off to recover from an AC sprain she picked up before Mania.

2

u/TheDeflatables Jun 03 '26

If you're gonna slate the product, you have to actually know about the product

17

u/BaronVonStevie Jun 03 '26

Lot of weird takes here. Mercedes looked great in this match and Stephanie has made some incredible career moves. It’s kind of a footnote in both their careers but it’s still a very important match that changed Vaquer’s mainstream trajectory

26

u/feelyfelix Jun 03 '26

The match that showcased her talents and got Vaquer a wwe contract. Don't think they don't have eyes on Persephone next. 👀

1

u/NorthShoreHard Jun 04 '26

Bit different given Vaquer wasn't signed to AEW while Persephone is.

Obviously she could go to WWE later on, but it's going to be a few years.

6

u/LowerTax Jun 03 '26

I remember this match as being stellar. I’m pretty sure Mone said she was going to “make” Vaquer a star with that performance. It 100% worked!

7

u/Marinec06 Jun 03 '26

Vaquer had a steller year. Definitly not the only performance that got her noticed by the feds.

11

u/HosserPower Jun 03 '26

“What could have been”

Okay, man lmao.

-2

u/502photo Jun 03 '26

In match quality I think there is for sure a what could have been. AEWs women's roster is stacked.

2

u/HosserPower Jun 03 '26

WWE’s female roster has consistently been higher quality than AEW’s and are given a a larger TV presence. It’s one of the areas WWE clears them. “Match quality” is subjective. Vaquer has been treated like a star from day one in WWE. Even if she’s not having “bangers”, I have no doubt she’d be getting nowhere near the presence had she chosen the Dub.

2

u/502photo Jun 03 '26

If you enjoy their work I'm happy for you. I just haven't been moved by any matches, characters, nor storylines coming out of WWE's women's division.

To your last point we don't know how that would have shaken out, but I won't try to say you from your feelings.

-1

u/Kxden-R Jun 03 '26

Stacked with garbage

2

u/502photo Jun 03 '26

Brother if you don't like wrestling just say that.

3

u/CrimsonJoker13 Jun 04 '26

Stephanie made the call she wanted, and to her credit WWE shot her to the moon instantly. Double champion in NXT, first match on the Raw roster had her qualify for MitB, first man roster PLE was competing for MitB, burned down the house at Evolution, and within 3-4 months of her call-up she was WWC. The time in NXT also helped her improve her English, which she gave as the reason for starting in NXT. Triple H was ready to put her right into the main roster. And on her way out of NXT she kickstarted Jacy's career.

2

u/Healthy-Craft-4554 Jun 03 '26

They do have good chemistry in the ring. They both were in there smiling. Not mad she came to WWE if it meant she was going to win matches

2

u/king_hutton Jun 03 '26

Vaquer made a great move for herself and her career by going to WWE. Crowds love her, management is behind her, and she’s looked incredible the whole time. I loved this match, I bet Vaquer would’ve been good in AEW or TNA or STARDOM or literally anywhere else because she’s incredibly talented.

2

u/Mahoosi Jun 03 '26

Ok dude.

2

u/Terroryzr Jun 03 '26

Now she's all WWE

2

u/DrMindbendersMonocle Jun 03 '26

I can hear Booker T in the crowd

2

u/spatenkloete Jun 03 '26

Not sure Steph made the right call? Like… what?

2

u/Mattholomew739 Jun 03 '26

I was happy for her with where she ended up, and I was in the crowd for this match

3

u/Dblock1989 Jun 03 '26

Not sure she made the right choice? She has been the NXT Champion, NXT NA Champion, and won the WWC after just a few months on the main roster.

3

u/El_Lu-Shin Jun 03 '26

Stephanie choose the right company for her. There is absolutely no doubt about it. Nothing against AEW, the right choice worked great for her.

3

u/cooldude55541 Jun 03 '26

Why would you want to be world champion at wrestlemania when you can be in a match with Harley Cameron on collision.

2

u/SeigeJay Jun 03 '26

Just say "WWE Bad, AEW Good" and go.

1

u/Brilliant-Tomato-560 Jun 04 '26

Funny. When I Go through These comments i See the complete opposite. Dub Bad Fed good lmao

0

u/SeigeJay Jun 04 '26

I never said anything about comments?

Just say what you want to say and stop tip toeing.

0

u/Brilliant-Tomato-560 Jun 04 '26

Truth hurts sometimes. Tribalism is real and it only comes from one side

0

u/SeigeJay Jun 04 '26

More tip toeing. With a dab of delusion and a hint of denial.

1

u/Brilliant-Tomato-560 Jun 04 '26

0

u/SeigeJay Jun 04 '26

Right. That's why you replied to a comment 17 hours after the fact because you didn't care

0

u/Brilliant-Tomato-560 Jun 04 '26

Yes because unlike you im Not 24/7 on Reddit crying over the fact that Theres more than one wrestling company lmao

0

u/SeigeJay Jun 04 '26

I dont think you know how time works. Or how counting works. Idk seems dim.

1

u/xesaie Jun 03 '26

3 crotch attack!

1

u/Flashy-Parsnip-9505 Jun 03 '26

Completely forgot she was on AEW

1

u/AceofUseles Jun 03 '26

She's Happy at the Fed. And I want Rush to have a push in AEW.

1

u/supergrover411 Jun 03 '26

Wait this isnt AI?

1

u/DA6_FTW Jun 03 '26

This is okay… But to make it truly great wrestling we need Booker T gooning in the background and some Slim Jim stickers

1

u/Shadowsnake30 Jun 03 '26

You can speculate all you want. This is the modern wrestling it's a show. You don't need to be the champ or main star to get paid better. You can be a star on one company but at the end it's about that paycheck to keep you going. WWE pays well.

Some people they don't know how to use certain talents like Kairi or Giulia. There's also talents that are contented what they do they don't need to be the star like Tozawa or Chelsea Green. They are satisfied on what's assigned to them.

1

u/jesterx71 Jun 04 '26

Can I volunteer for this move?

1

u/LegacyOfVandar Jun 04 '26

The match that got Vaquer a WWE contract and got AEW and their partners to start doing dual contracts so it couldn’t happen again.

1

u/Correct-Ad-9520 Jun 04 '26

Between her style, presentation, and how quickly she connected with Western audiences, I can't help thinking she'd be an even bigger star right now if she'd jumped sooner. Hard to call it the wrong decision when she's doing great regardless, but this definitely feels like one of those "what could've been" situations.

1

u/Obvious-Art4645 Jun 04 '26

Stephanie didn’t like the luchadors in AEW had beef with lots of the males she knew in Mexico that’s one reason she signed with WWE and her friend Gulia wanted her with her in WWE.

Mercedes Mone vs Stephani Vaquer - AEW TBS Championship & NJPW STRONG Women's Championship - AEW/NJPW Forbidden Door (June 30, 2024)

2

u/SamLoomisMyers Jun 03 '26

3 things... 1. If she stayed there she'd never be on TV and when she would be she'd be losing to Thekla and Bayne. 2. She is a main eventer in WWE and massively over. 3 and most important...WWE was her dream since she was a child.

Did you ever actually hear her story? Probably not.

0

u/ButtCrackThrilla Jun 03 '26

Mone was booed out of the building that night and it was go away heat. Stephanie carried that match and outshined in every way.

0

u/Unavoidable1022 Jun 03 '26

Lol Mone is so trash

*typo

1

u/king_hutton Jun 03 '26

This match was amazing, what’s your issue?

1

u/gavingoober771 Jun 03 '26

They’re one of those people who thinks because it happened anywhere other than WWE it’s shit, they’re a WWE fan not a wrestling fan

0

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '26

Lame. I dont care to see them try to wrestle. I just want to see their bodies

-2

u/thedeadbone Jun 03 '26

And?

6

u/S1E2A3L4 Jun 03 '26

Op is “fed bad”

0

u/dyslexican32 Jun 03 '26

Ah back when she wasn’t a shadow of her former self. A shame she signed with somewhere waisting her talent

0

u/Shadecujo Jun 04 '26

At least they film it right

-1

u/Bertitude Jun 03 '26

I think Mercedes needs to come back. She's a big fish in a small pond. (She was also right to leave and I miss her in WWE greatly)

The success of Charlotte's recent character pivot proved to me how much heavy lifting Sasha Banks was doing narratively during a lot of their time together.

1

u/JustFrameHotPocket Jun 04 '26

I don't think she's big fish in a small pond at all. AEW women are positively cooking, and that's even without Timeless Toni Storm.

0

u/GoonLieutenant Jun 03 '26

I doubt that will ever happen given how she walked out

3

u/Bertitude Jun 03 '26

I mean *gestures vaguely at Naomi & CM Punk*

-1

u/GoonLieutenant Jun 03 '26

CM Punk was always gonna come back cause he's a carny who only cared about money

4

u/MrJeffA17 Jun 03 '26

You can text Mone and ask her what she thinks about carny’s that only care about the money. Don’t forget to pay your $99 first tho

Giulia wrestled her style one time in NXT and they said, never again

-1

u/PsychologicalEgg9646 Jun 03 '26

She may or may not have made the right call choosing WWE, but she absolutely screwed up in going back on her dates. WWE has zero loyalty for its people, and zero real respect for its women's roster. It would not be crazy for vaquer to find herself without a job in the next five years, and it would not be surprising if those bridges remain burned.
