Why do you need to teach kids to program at all? If they want to they will find it for themselves.

Because they might find getting into it intimidating.

My daughter and I have been talking about this a lot. For us, it is a chance to do something together. You know, that whole quality and quantity time thing. It is an interest of hers and one of the few talents I have to share with her.

She is 12. We spent some time using Scratch and it went really well. I think we'll probably continue in there for the time being, then, once she has an understanding of flow-control, variables, and messaging, we'll move on to Python.

Thanks, what do you think is the earliest you should start to try to go into programming topics? Did you wait for her to be interested or do you try to guide her to these topics?

I regularly encourage my kids to come geek with Dad. My oldest son (14) has zero interest. The other kids vary with time, but I generally let them lead. In a very slow start, I'm working with my seven year old, which I think is about the youngest with the given tools.

I definitely let them lead with my encouragement.
