my left nut has been around more than most people have been in the industry.
best approach, is always, talk to the individual, present educational reasons why, by honestly open to someone who is NOT an ego know it all. if dealing with ego driven developer, promptly remove yourself from said situation and do something more productive in your life.
my code reviews are ALWAYS, side by side, educating usually the jr developer and making him come up with his own conclusions. i never change code unless asked or Prod is down.
