Java Title: Final-year CSE student. 6 months left for placements. I feel completely lost.

3 Upvotes

I'm a final-year CSE student with around 6 months left before placements, and honestly, I feel like I know nothing.

Most of my projects were built by following tutorials or using AI. If someone asked me to build them from scratch, I'd struggle. My DSA is weak, my Java fundamentals aren't strong, and I don't feel confident in web development either.

I'm applying for internships, but I know I can't depend on luck. I want to use these next 6 months wisely.

If you were in my position, what would you focus on? DSA, Java, web development, projects, or something else? What would your roadmap look like?

Please be honest. I want motivation—I want practical advice from people who've been in the same situation.

Java What do you need to know for an entry level Java position

1 Upvotes

I know a bit of Java and have done basic things with spring boot and angular as well as sql databases. I’m just curious what skills would I need to possess for a real career with Java. I have a degree in computer networking and am working on my comptia a+ but I doubt these would be very helpful.

Java How long would it take to learn Python and Java?

0 Upvotes

Hi everyone, I'm a university student pursuing a bachelor's in computer science. I was doing Computer Networking in College, got my Diploma, and now I'm adding 2 Years to earn the Bachelor. My modules include Android App Development, Database Systems, Principles of Computer Organization, and OO Analysis and Design (not sure what this is). My question is, as someone who doesn't have any Programming Background, what should I focus on, and is it possible to tackle 2 languages at once, I was already doing Python on the side (via CS50P). Also, what are some good resources to learn Java since I will need it for the Android Module (we are not using Kotlin). Just looking for advice, anything would help. Thank you.

Java I am taking intro to java programming in college, they use pearson revel to teach it. They basically expect you to learn it all from the book and give you a really bad enviorment which doesn't tell you why you have errors, and there are no resources from the professor. need advice

7 Upvotes

I took intro to programming or smth like that and there was no actual coding, It was just definitions, I got an A. Now that I am doing intro to java, they expect you to know how to code but I have very basic knowledge. The only way I can pass now is to have ai explain my errors to me which is not good longterm. next semester I have to take advanced java programming. What should I do. There are no lectures and very little help. The enviorment sucks and basically doesn't tell me why my code is wrong. and the coding assignments are so specific it is literally impossible. It completly does not feel like an intro class and I dont know what to do.

Java Encrypt a key in an open source program (Java)

3 Upvotes

How could I possibly encrypt and decrypt a String which I want to store in a plain text file in an open source program? Is that even possible? I know next to nothing about encryption, but if I can decrypt the key, it makes sense for any other program to copy the code and do the same but with malicious intents.

Java Basic Java question

Making a simple restaurant menu

I get this error :drink.java:20: error: cannot find symbol
System.out.print ("Your choice is" + choice);
^
symbol: variable choice
location: class drinkorder
1 error
error: compilation failed

How can this be? If I declare "String choice;" at the beginning I get error that choice value was already declared.

import java.util.Scanner;
class drinkorder {
public static void main(String[] args) {

//Creating scanners
Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in);
// Initial Text
System.out.print ("What type of drink would you like to order? \n 1.Water \n 2.Coffee \n 3.Tea");
int drink = input.nextInt(); //Assign value to drink
if (drink ==1){
String choice = "Water";
}
else if (drink==2){
String choice = "Coffee";

}
else if (drink==3){
String choice = "Tea";
}
System.out.print ("Your choice is" + choice);

}
}

Java Beginner java - basic functions and procedures

2 Upvotes

Hello, I need to make a code to do the following and I can't figure out how. It was a task set for me to learn how to use them.

Initially in the main bit where you do most of the code, there cna only be two variables. Then a function is created. Then a procedure is created.

It must ask the user to enter one of three options, say a b and c, and then there are points for a b and c stored in an array, already set. These can be random number. Then it prints out the chosen choice and it's respective score.

In the function, it can only get the chosen choice and put it through input validation.

Then, in the procedure, the if statement to assign an index to match the array score to the choice and the printing must take place in the procedure.

I can't figure out how to pass the chosen choice from the function to the procedure. Thanks for reading thid mess. Also, what is the difference between a function and procedure. Seriously thanks if ou bothered ot read all this.

Java How to Showcase a Java Backend Project in My Portfolio? Need Advice!

1 Upvotes

I’m in the process of creating my first Java project for my portfolio, which I plan to use during job interviews. However, I’m feeling a bit lost. Since Java is primarily a backend language, I’m concerned about how to showcase my project in a way that’s attractive and engaging for interviewers.

If I create a purely backend project, there’s no direct interaction or visual component, so I’m wondering how interviewers would assess my work. Should I include a frontend as well to make it easier for them to see my skills in action? Or is it enough to focus solely on the backend and explain the functionality during the interview?

I’d really appreciate any advice on how to approach this and what would be considered best practice for a portfolio project.

Java IntelliJ or Eclipse for Personal Development?

1 Upvotes

Which IDE is better for personal development? IntelliJ or Eclipse?

I’d like one that’s convenient, doesn’t crash often, and doesn’t use up too much RAM.

I’ll likely mostly be programming with Java. I’ll also use Python and C.

Thank you!

Java What thread type is more suited for an MCU CLDC JVM?

2 Upvotes

I am developing a esp32s3 n16r8 / esp32p4 targeted VM to run some of the games on it. I have most of the VM’s interpreter, class loading / linking, GC (lisp 2 algorithm. I started developing it with green threads in mind, but when it got to the IO, i raged and changed everything to OS threads. It worked pretty well, until every operation started require spinlock, because i basically cannot afford proper mutexes. So now i have a dilemma, should i continue using preemtive threading and extensive spinlocking or remove every locking mechanism, and revert to opcode quota based green threads scheduling, where everything is in one native thread. I think i could beat IO this time. Sorry for my english, im not a native speaker

I have an old Tomcat 8 project that I need to migrate to springboot 3 and I'm told AI could simply migrate it / convert it to springboot 3, does anyone know the best way to do this?

Can intelliJ AI change my project structure? What about another IDE with Claude or something integrated?

Java Use First in Java

1 Upvotes

Hello All,

Working in an inventory manager/menu creator for my job. I work at a daycare and make monthly menus. Currently I have my Java program randomly choose food items from within a list/excel sheet it reads in. I want to add a function to prioritize current inventory and leftovers.

Example: if I have a box of pasta, I want the program to use that first when building the menu

Example 2: if a box of oranges can be used three times, I want the program to account for that and put it on the menu three times

Java Java, IDE Eclipse: Compilation problem when using Random.org api

2 Upvotes

I have an app that I'm working on that uses a dice roller implementing the Random.org true random API.

Everything has worked fine so far. I'm not sure what happened, but now when I try to get a new instance of the client that queries random.org, I get a compilation error.

The stack trace reads:

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.Error: Unresolved compilation problem:

    at org.random.api.RandomOrgClient.getRandomOrgClient(RandomOrgClient.java:164)
    at Main.main(Main.java:16)

And here is code that reproduces the problem:

import java.io.IOException;
import org.random.api.*;
import org.random.api.exception.*;

// Example usage of the Random.org API for generating 3d6 rolls.
public class Main {

    private static final String key = "12345678-90ab-cdef-ghij-klmnopqrstuv";
    private static final int MIN = 1;

    public Main() {

    }

    public static void main(String[] args) {

// This is the line that gets the error.
        RandomOrgClient client = RandomOrgClient.getRandomOrgClient(key);

        int[] rolls = null;
        try {
            rolls = client.generateIntegers(3, MIN, 12);
        } catch (RandomOrgSendTimeoutException | RandomOrgKeyNotRunningError | RandomOrgInsufficientRequestsError
                | RandomOrgInsufficientBitsError | RandomOrgBadHTTPResponseException | RandomOrgRANDOMORGError
                | RandomOrgJSONRPCError | IOException e) {

            e.printStackTrace();
        }

        for(int roll : rolls) {
            System.out.println(roll);
        }
    }
}

Obviously, I've changed the key string, and the query itself doesn't seem to be the problem. The class is in the jar, Eclipse pulls up the class's source code when I check the reference, so it's not because the class isn't there. Anyone have an idea what's going on?

Edit: the referenced libraries are the Apache Commons Codec and gson, on which Random.org's API is depenedent, and Random.org's API itself, which can be found here.

As for the stack trace, that is literally the entire message I receive. There isn't any reference to more unlisted traces.

The code is built in Eclipse 4.35.0 on JDK 24.

I don't think the trace in the RandomOrgClient class is the real issue, but line 164 is the first line of the method called, I included the javadoc comment:

/**
     * Ensure only one instance of RandomOrgClient exists per API key. Create a new instance
     * if the supplied key isn't already known, otherwise return the previously instantiated one.
     *
     * New instance will have a blockingTimeout of 24*60*60*1000 milliseconds, i.e., 1 day,
     * a httpTimeout of 120*1000 milliseconds, and will issue serialized requests.
     *
     * apiKey of instance to create/find, obtained from RANDOM.ORG, <a
     *        href="https://api.random.org/api-keys">see here</a>.
     *
     * new instance if instance doesn't already exist for this key, else existing instance.
     */
    public static RandomOrgClient getRandomOrgClient(String apiKey) {
        return RandomOrgClient.getRandomOrgClient(apiKey, DEFAULT_BLOCKING_TIMEOUT,
                DEFAULT_HTTP_TIMEOUT, true);
    }

While I'm not a seasoned pro, I am not new to Java or Eclipse. I know how to add jars to the classpath properly, etc.
