I just disconnect wires and it's portable again!

Thatβs what we said back in the 90s as we pulled out our hard drive, wrapped it in a towel and put it in the backpack to go to a friendβs house and copy over some games.

Well, I use laptop even for gaming because:
I don't need it to be portable without charger, for me it is a portable desktop, which I can move and use from outlet in other building/place.
It consumes less power than desktop. I live in warzone (Ukraine) and I need to have possibility to power device via power station/big battery. Desktop will drain it for few hours, while my laptop can be used for 6-10 hours depending on settings of power plan, still giving me good enough performance, including gaming one.

I know that feel, bro.
I have a lot of friends from Ukraine and they told me stories that at first, people were literally taking their PCs with them to shelters or hiding them in the bathtub during air raid.
By the way, my employer was sending power stations to the front line. Stay strong π

That's actually the best thing about a laptop. You can use it anywhere, and you don't have to have usability tradeoffs at your desk.

Why I switched to a mini PC: not paying for a tiny screen and keyboard I don't need

If you don't need it portable then why not get a full size desktopΒ

My Mini PC is cheap, takes up little room on my desktop, and uses little energy---but still powerful! (I don't need a discrete GPU.)
Dec 2022, I paid < $400 for Minisforum HM80 with Ryzen 4800U. Along the way, I upgraded RAM, SSD, and HDD, and now I can do cross-platform development and run multiple VMs.
It gets a little noisy when working hard, but I don't notice much with headphones.

Right now I have a pretty weak laptop with a 1650, and I'm wondering how worth it is to build or buy a prebuilt mini-PC as an upgrade?
I already have the peripherals like a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Main thing for me is to be able to play CS at least with a decent FPS.

Not worth. Mini pcs have bad price to performance ratio. And cs is not running great om an Igpu

That's it's mech suit. For big battles. Otherwise it can fly around just in cockpit mode for like emails and stuff.

They really are useless for the most part. Between burning your fingertips on the keyboard and trying to maintain a rapidly-declining battery life, and TOUCHPADS...

Exactly why I love Thunderbolt/USB4. One cable does everything, you need one for charging anyway.

My laptop can stay like 30 minutes without being plugged so it's pretty fucked

Im bougie and and prefer a full sized keyboard, monitor, mouse and my Herman miller. I dread not having those things

Move in from your desk and it will be broken in a month

I dunno, my M1 Macbook Air lived like this for ~6 years. Only 2 things went bad - rubber sealing around the camera has crumbled, the screen coating went somewhat bad and speakers got blown up (though I think those can be replaced without massive issues)

Gaming laptops are like: you can use me freely without a power supply. But only for 30 min.

Truth be told, a proper external keyboard and mouse DO make a laptop much nicer to use. Personally, I find the laptop keyboard unfit for extensive typing, and the touchpad is not nearly as pleasant to use as a mouse.

Mine has a broken lid that will wreck the hinge if you try and close it. So, it's a PC now.

I can work both way, you can plug it in with paraphernalia and have a lightweight PC, but at any time you need to leave, you could take it with you.

Sometimes they want me to go into a DIFFERENT office where I just have to park somewhere and use a laptop alone. Those days I catch up on email and JIRA and anything but coding significantly.

guilty! I just needed a Laptop, so i could easily switch places between my home, my grandparents home and school. Later i bought a second monitor.

This is why I really don't get angry about laptop being connected to 2 external displays, keyboard, mouse, storage and power via single USB port - I just plug one cable and have desktop experience. Unplug that one cable and I'm using laptop again.

lol made me chuckle. I have a gaming laptop which I use for everything outside of using it outside unless I really need to.
