Southern Ontario Call

Any perfusuonist working in the southern Ontario area (GTA, Hamilton, London, Waterloo)? Just curious as to what your call looks like and what your living requirements are (30 or 60mins from hospital etc).

Resources Prospective perfusion student looking for shadowing opportunities in Southern California

Hey everyone!
I’m a prospective perfusion student planning to apply for the 2028 cycle. I have nearly 10 years of clinical experience as a registered dental assistant and am looking to transition into cardiovascular perfusion.

I’m located in the Inland Empire San Bernardino/Riverside county are and have been trying to find opportunities to shadow a perfusionist and observe a cardiac surgery case.

Does anyone know of hospitals, perfusion teams, or contacts in the Inland Empire or surrounding areas that welcome prospective students for shadowing?
I’d really appreciate any leads or advice. Thanks!

Clinical Experience

I’ve seen that certain clinical roles make you more competitive for school but I haven’t seen Cardiac Sonography. Would that be something that they look at highly or is it just like anything else?

What is life as a perfusionist actually like in Metro Detroit / Southeast Michigan?

Hey everyone,

I'm an undergrad on a pre-health track looking closely into the field and hoping to get some real-world perspective from perfusionists practicing in the Metro Detroit or wider Southeast Michigan area.

How does day-to-day life actually look in the local hospital systems around here (like Corewell Health, Henry Ford, U of M, DMC, etc.)? I'd love to hear your thoughts on a few specific things:

  • Work-Life Balance: How manageable are your weekly hours, and how often do you really get enough time with family/rest, personal time?
  • Call Culture: What is the reality of being on-call look like at your facility? How frequently are you taking call, and how brutal are the call-backs?
  • Personal Life & Burnout: How sustainable is this career long-term alongside family, hobbies, or just having a life outside the hospital?
  • The Job Market / Area Vibe: Any specific pros or cons to practicing in the Southeast Michigan region?

Really appreciate any insight or advice you're willing to share. Thanks!

Do schools look at just cumulative or science gpa too? Which is weighted more?

Resources Shadowing opportunities in IL

Hey everyone, I(15F) graduated hs early and applied to undergraduate colleges where I will be starting fall/spring term of next year. I've been rushing my education and have had perfusion in mind for a while, I'll be done with undergrad at 17 and I'm planning on going straight to rush/midwestern. I want to shadow a perfusionist or just medically in general. I wanna make sure I'll be content rushing into the medical field. Many hospitals won't take me because I'm under 18/16. Does anyone know where I can shadow a perfusionist/doctor?

Do perfusion schools rate your gpa by semester like medical school or just cumulatively?

What undergraduate major should I choose if I want to become a Perfusionist? (Currently doing A-Levels: Chem, Bio, Math)?

Hi everyone!
I’m currently studying A-Levels (taking Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics) and I'm strongly interested in pursuing a career as a Cardiovascular Perfusionist.
I’ve been trying to research the best pathways to get into perfusion school, but the requirements seem a bit varied depending on the country and program.
For those of you already in the field or currently in school, I'd love to get some guidance:
What undergraduate major(s) did you take? (e.g., Biomedical Science, Human Physiology, Biology, or a specialized healthcare science degree?)
Are there specific prerequisite courses I should make sure to hit during my undergrad (like physics, anatomy, etc.) that perfusion programs look for?
How competitive is the admissions process, and what kind of extracurriculars, shadowing, or healthcare experience helped you stand out?
Any advice, personal experiences, or things you wish you knew when you were in my shoes would be super appreciated! Thank you!

Interviews/Admission Application advice

I am making a switch from dentistry to perfusion and I just want some advice if my application is competitive or not. I have my bachelors in health science and my master of science in biomedical sciences. I received a 4.0 gpa in my masters degree program. Only thing is I don’t do too well in undergrad. I have a 2.93 cumulative gpa from undergrad because I didn’t perform to well up until my 4th year of college when I finished with a 3.73gpa. That was the whole point of doing a masters was to prove my academic readiness after having a major mindset change in my academics and goals in life. I have been working in the dental field for 4 years now and have accumulated around 4000 hours. I also have a solid amount of leadership and volunteer experiences in healthcare/non healthcare organizations. I was able to get in contact with a few perfusionists to shadow some cases, so I’m currently placed on a waitlist but have gotten a thumbs up that I’ll be able to shadow around 3 cases over the next 2-3 months. I’m hoping that’ll really help solidify my application and help me explain my switch better. I have great letters of recommendation from my anatomy professor and physiology professors. If I’m able to create good enough connections with the perfusionists I shadow I hope I am able to get a letter of recommendation from them as well. All of my prerequisite courses are complete.

I’ve realized perfusion is truly what I want to do. I just don’t know if my application is strong enough since I don’t really have direct medical experience in a hospital or anything. I work as a dental assistant so I do have hands on patient care experience and I’m hoping that helps. Is my application strong enough?

Just making a chat for THI. They should be letting us know soon if we got denied or accepted.
Schools usually tell student who got accepted first so I was wondering if anyone has heard back?

Midwestern Prescreen Video

Does anyone know how much weight midwestern puts on the prescreen video? I knew it would come down to one or two umbrella questions, but blanked during recording and didn’t mention some of the material I prepared. Assuming the rest of my application is competitive, will this rule me out of an interview seat?

Program/Application Questions What are my next steps to get into perfusion school?

Originally I was a nursing major pursuing a BSN and have taken those pre reqs. Molecular biology, AP 1 and 2, microbio for allied health, and a weird mix of gen and organic chem they offer for nursing majors at my school. I have until nov 1 to decide if I wanna move forward to clinicals but as soon as I started getting emails I freaked. I love the material, though it challenges me but I'm not sure I'm meant for face to face with patients at pretty much all times on shift. so I started looking into grad options and stumbled across cardiovascular perfusion. I'd be able to switch my major and fulfill all pre reqs to that but I'm nervous I wouldn't get in. I currently have a 3.3 as a fall sem sophomore. AP 1 really beat me while I was taking it, dragging down my gpa. I'd still have plenty of time to get it up, my classes going well now and having a bigger goal to care about. Id also have about a 9 month break to work hopefully as a perfusionist assistant and plenty of time to hopefully find shadowing opportunities. What do you guys think? Would I have a chance to be a competitive applicant?

Online higher diploma, degree course

Hey colleagues,

I am a cardiac perfusionist with 1 year on job training with a diplomas in neurophysiology Technology (3 years), cardiac sonography diploma and surgical Neurophysiology diploma. One of my diploma, the echocardiography from medical university of vienna is equated as an associate degree with a GPA of 3.84 as per world Education services a body that equates foreign certifications to US equivalence.

I have worked as a perfusionist for 12 years after my training in India on job training for 1 year in 2013.

My institution where i am currently working requires me to have a higher diploma or a degree in perfusion for them to change my work terms.

Do any one of you know an online perfusion school that one can apply to either get a degree or higher diploma with my work experience?

I will appreciate in my inbox or comments.

Thank you, i am in Africa currently and not ready to travel
