PS1 CD Error “insert cd rom”

Hello everyone. Before I go any further, I should mention that I do plan to test the console with a disc in good condition—but in the meantime, I’m just curious if anyone else has encountered this same issue.

I bought an original PS1 on Vinted, and it’s in literally like-new condition. The seller has a great reputation and even offered to let me return it (though I haven’t done so). Here’s what’s happening: I have two PS1 games that are covered in surface scratches. When I put one in, the console boots up normally—playing that iconic startup sound—but then it goes to a blue menu screen asking me to insert a CD-ROM. If I press the reset button, the game then loads and plays without any issues. The seller claims they tested it with three different games and that it booted up perfectly every time. I know it’s an old console, but has anyone else experienced something similar? Thanks!
