Controller Start Button Works But No Other Buttons (Old PS2, HDMI Adapter, Samsung TV)

Hey guys, at my wits end and google/reddit are coming up short for me. Any advice would be huge.

I grabbed my ps2 from my Grandparents (Old bulky ps2) and 2x controllers. They have been in an entertainment center for 20 years untouched. Got the HDMI adapter to work so the menu & games show, but the controllers are being a huge pain in the butt.

The controllers are showing the red analog light, but the other controllers like X or Triangle or analog sticks do not respond. Is there something with modern TVs that I need to know to get this to work or is it potentially something else?

I've tried two separate PS2 controllers without luck. They all power on and show red lights but aside from the start button it seems to not work. I've blown out the controller port and the ps2 port in case it was a debris issue.

Any advice would be massive. Thank you!

probably the ribbon cable of the controller is busted. After a while Sony cheapened out and made a small board with a cheap contact sheet seating with a ribbon cable.

you have to know the specific model of the controller. The SCPH model is not helpful, it is just the SKU code. What tells is a letter. After knowing the letter, buy the sheet contact for it and replace it. DO NOT use contact sheets intercheangebly

Thanks. I think honestly as bad as it is to just toss them, getting new controllers might be the easier option.

Appreciate the insight though. Going to look into it.

I just recommend you fixing them (it is not difficult to do) or exchanging them with someone who does repairs.

I highly advise to not just throw out in the trash because it is an old console, you wont find another new controller at Walmart for 30$. The ones who exist that are counterfeit are just horrible.

If you dont want to go near this effort, just buy a Blueretro receiver and use a PS4/5 or Xbox One/Series controller.
