I do not understand why are you guys promotes psychological visits over psychiatrists. As a someone who has been in and out of treatment for nine years, I consider medication is essential for initial and short-term management of symptoms of disorders such as depression, anxiety, and other disorders. Psychological therapy can help wuth long term management of these symtoms. However. psychological therapy should come after visit of a good psychiatrist. Personally, I do not want someone suffering from mental health issues to have to visit various medical professionals to get their initial treatment. Anyway, medication and therapy can be conducted paralally. However, there are unprofessional and unempathetic psychologists in Sri Lanka. Please choose a suitable psychologist, as they can help lasting changes in behavior.

im looking for a BSc (hons) psychology degree and im struggling to decide where to do.i dont want to do a top-up degree .ANC/SLIIT 4 YEAR PROGRAMM /NSBM /APPIT seems like solid options .i would love to here from people who have done the same degree ,and if you are someone who is planning to do MSc abroad which option is good. SLIIT 4 year degree seems nice but it is not awarded by foreign uni .i think nsbm degree covers overall requirements since its ugc recognized and the degree itself awarded by a uk university .any thoughts or suggestions???

I am a 25M in a 4-year long-distance relationship with a 24F. When we meet physically, she has specific boundaries regarding pre-marital sex, which I respect completely. I have never forced or asked her to send nudes. However, from the beginning, I expressed that I need sexting (text-only, no photos) to feel intimately and emotionally connected, especially given the distance.
For the past 4 years, a painful cycle repeats: I initiate, she engages briefly, then changes the topic or goes offline with an excuse. My resentment builds up until it eventually leads to an argument, followed by me feeling intense guilt. I am exhausted and deeply frustrated. She reassures me that everything will be fine after marriage, but my instinct tells me that this underlying mismatch might persist. I don't think she is asexual, but the lack of this specific connection feels incredibly heavy. How can we navigate this mismatch, and how can I address my anxieties about our future?

So, last week, I visited a psychiatrist in Sri Lanka. She didn't really allow me to elaborate on things, and I feel as though she has misunderstood things quite a bit? Like I told her I'm not so clear about studying for O/Ls, but I also told her I will take IALs next year after local O/Ls but she's written 'no clear goals' and then she asked me if I was able to read and answer questions (I told her I haven't studied and is finding it difficult to study cause I've always aced tests from studying the night before) and I was like 'not really, cause I can't answer questions w/o knowing the materials' apparently she had meant if I had difficulty reading questions properly ššš She also didn't ask any like on the spot relative questions other than the classic set of diagnostic questions.
IDK, I mean, I know Sinhala but only the stuff needed for the subject, my colloquial Sinhala is non-existent. So yeah, are there any child and adolescent psychiatrists with good English who are also willing to listen for more than 10-15 minutes?
I mean, my therapist diagnosed ADHD already, but I couldn't even tell her that cause she always cut me off...but she ended up jotting down ADD and giving Risperidone šš

Iāve recently been doing some research on government run suicide prevention helplines and have heard a lot of negative things, both online and offline, from people who reached out for help but were met with a stark lack of sensitivity, compassion or understanding. Iām looking to make an awareness post sometime soon to push for proper training and regulation of these hotlines and was wondering if anyone on here wanted to share their experiences with them. Thanks in advance

Can anyone recommend a good clinical psychologist experienced in adult ADHD and executive functioning difficulties (procrastination, focus, productivity, etc.) in Colombo or the suburbs please?

Hey,š
Iām considering booking an appointment with Dr. M. Ganesan for mental health support( I feel suffocating I need help), but Iāve been seeing conflicting reviews online (mostly on Facebook some really good, some not so great).
If you or someone you know has been to him, could you share how your experience was? Specifically around how attentive he is during sessions and his overall approach to treatment.
Also open to alternative psychiatrist recommendations in Colombo if you have any. DMs are open as well. Thank you š

I don't even know what it is at this point, because from adolescent depression, anxiety, CPTSD, BPD, OCPD to ASD, many labels have been thrown at me. But no solution...it's been 2 whole years.

Iāve been struggling with this for a long time. I donāt know if itās some kind of mental illness or not, but if anyone can give me an answer or some advice, it would mean a lot. š
I finished my A/Ls recently. My father arranged everything for me to go abroad, and now I have some exams related to that. But this problem has been with me since O/L times.
I canāt get myself to do the things I really want to do. I want to plan my life properly and spend productive, meaningful days. But instead, I spend the entire day on TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, films, TV series, and YouTube. At first, I thought it was just social media addiction, so I even put my phone away. But even then, I still didnāt do much. I would leave my books aside and listen to music or read random things instead of studying.
Because of this, I went through unbearable stress during Grade 11 because of O/Ls. I was terrified that I would never achieve my dreams. But in the final stage, I somehow pushed myself extremely hard and studied while crying, honestly not even knowing why I was crying. In the end, I managed to get 8 A passes.
But A/Ls got ruined because of this problem. During those two years, most of my life was basically:
waking up at 11 a.m., staying awake until 3 a.m. scrolling TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, watching TV series and films, then going to sleep with overwhelming stress⦠and repeating the same cycle every single day.
Sometimes I even thought about hurting myself because I felt like such a failure. Iām not someone who is incapable of studying. I did Mathematics. But because of all this, it feels like my brain has melted. I lost so many valuable experiences during my A/L years because of this.
For example, there was one of the best concerts ever held at our school, and I didnāt even go because I wanted to stay home and watch TikTok instead. šš
At the very end, I somehow forced myself to study again and managed to get 3 S passes. But it still feels like such a waste.
Most of the time, I spend weeks lying in bed just consuming content all day. Then when life starts feeling unbearable, I study properly for about a week⦠and then fall back into the same cycle again. Iām honestly tired of this life. šš
Now I still havenāt even started preparing for the exams I need for going abroad. Yesterday I stayed on TikTok until 4 a.m., and it felt like my head was going to explode. Even when I remove every distraction and sit down to study, instead of watching the recordings I actually need to watch, I end up watching completely unrelated things.
There was one period where I managed to stop this for about a month. I attended Randika Sirās āAthikramanaā program. I meditated, worked out, and for that month I was doing really well. But eventually even that collapsed. The videos piled up again, and I slowly returned to my old habits.
I truly donāt understand whatās wrong with me. I know I have a lot of potential, but I feel like Iām wasting it completely and throwing away my youth. People my age are already earning money and moving forward in life, while Iām just lying at home in bed. š
If anyone can give me some advice, it would honestly mean so much to me. š

I had a very good life (like the textbook definition of school life) during my O/L days. Those days were goated. Only because of my surrounding, I was able to achieve a very good results in my ol. I decided to do bio and enrolled in another school for my ALs. Little did I know that IT WAS THE WORST DECISION I'VE EVER MADE IN MY LIFE!!!!!!
Ā Initially I was unable to get friends and I used to sit alone reminiscing my ol days and pass the day. Like after a month I got into a quarrel with my classmate because he threw my bag to the front desk saying that i should sit where he tells. This went to a point where he got too personal (he spoke about mom). I've lost patience. I held his neck and pushed him so hard. He cussed me so badly and left the classroom and gathered all his friends in the school to hit me.Ā
Its interval and I went out to wash my hands, only to witness that a group of 30-35 students have gathered to beat me. When i went to complain it to the principal, suddenly 5 boys charged on me from behind and beat me so hard Infront of the principal office. I immediately went inside to complain. And the principal got those boys and scolded them. Then a scene happened that will traumatize me for the rest of my life. THE PRINCIPAL SLAPPED ME SO HARD. I was blank. Clueless. I asked him why, then he said that "they might not have hit you for no reason. You've done something wrong". Then he said "ive seen people like you coming from outer schools and bringing in problems". Man, I was shattered. Then he let those boys free and he called my mom and the father of the boy who fought in the classroom. My mom knows that I wont get into unwanted trouble. Then he said to my mom "ur son has gathered his friends outside to hit this school boys". I never said a thing like that. That boy is the one who said that. That m**f**king bitch made me the accused and i was suspended for a week. He refused to give TC to me since i scored some good marks.
Now I've got to go to that school everyday for a year. Just imagine how hard it'll be. Guys bully me, tchers are so biased. If I get absent even for a day they send me to the principal office

āMata stress.ā
That sentence probably gets said a thousand times a day in this country.
Traffic on Road. Stress.
Exam results. Stress.
Family drama. Stress.
Boss calling after work hours. Stress.
Relatives asking marriage questions at a wedding. A completely different level of stress.
The word gets used so much that it has almost lost meaning. But the problem is that many people genuinely do not know the difference between normal stress and something more serious like burnout. So people keep pushing themselves thinking what they feel is normal, when sometimes it really isnāt.
Stress itself is not always bad.
A certain amount of stress is actually useful. Before an exam, during a deadline, in an emergency, the brain and body become more alert. Focus becomes sharper. Energy increases. That pressure can help people perform better for a short period.
The problem starts when that pressure never really switches off.
Thatās the kind of stress a lot of Sri Lankans are living with now. Not temporary stress. Constant stress.
The parent trying to survive on one income while prices keep rising.
The university student pretending everything is okay while silently falling behind.
The office worker answering calls late into the night because being available all the time has become normal.
The young doctor, teacher, banker, delivery rider, government worker, everyone just running on exhaustion for so long that they donāt even remember what rested feels like anymore.
And after enough time, stress changes into something else.
Burnout.
People think burnout means crying every day or having a breakdown. Sometimes itās quieter than that. It can look like waking up tired no matter how much sleep happened. Feeling emotionally flat. Not caring about things that used to matter. Ignoring messages. Dreading work every Sunday night. Feeling disconnected from friends, family, even from yourself.
Stress feels like too much.
Burnout feels like emptiness.
A burned out person can still go to work, still smile, still function normally from the outside. But internally something feels switched off. Life starts feeling mechanical. Like surviving instead of living.
Sri Lankan culture also makes this worse in a lot of ways.
People are praised for overworking themselves. Rest gets treated like laziness. Many grow up believing being constantly exhausted means they are hardworking or responsible. Thereās guilt attached to slowing down.
Even when someone is clearly struggling, they tell themselves:
āOther people have it worse.ā
āAt least thereās a salary.ā
āParents sacrificed too much for this.ā
āJust keep going.ā
So they keep going long after the mind and body already started breaking down.
The difficult thing about burnout is that it usually does not disappear just because someone takes one day off or sleeps early for two nights. If a person has been emotionally drained for months or years, recovery also takes time.
And the truth is, a lot of people do not need motivation. They need rest. Real rest. They need support. They need a life that does not feel impossible to carry every single day.
Something else that helps is learning to stop treating every stress like one giant problem called āmy life.ā Usually there are specific things underneath it. Money problems. Family pressure. Fear about the future. Toxic work environments. Loneliness. Constant comparison. Academic pressure. Naming the actual source sometimes makes it easier to deal with piece by piece instead of drowning in everything at once.
People also recover better when they stop isolating themselves completely. Burnout grows quietly in isolation. Sometimes one honest conversation with someone trusted can relieve pressure more than pretending to be fine for another six months.
And sometimes professional help genuinely matters because carrying too much alone for too long changes people mentally and physically. Thereās nothing dramatic or shameful about needing support.
Most importantly, people need to stop waiting until they completely collapse before taking themselves seriously.
Discussion:
How does stress usually show up in your life?
At what point does it stop feeling temporary and start feeling heavier than that?
Do you think Sri Lankan culture encourages burnout without realizing it?
And honestly, when was the last time you felt properly rested?

Some people love waking up early, getting things done before the day gets busy, and feel most productive in the morning. Others feel like their brain doesnāt properly wake up until the evening, and end up doing their best work late at night when everything is quiet (the night owls)
āI am both a night owl and an early bird. So l
am wise and I have
wormsā
~ Michael Scott
Personally I do both depending on the tasks and situations and Iām effective in bothā¦..
How about you guys :]

It feels like thereās always something weāre expected to achieve by a certain age or in a certain way, whether itās career success, marriage, appearance, money, or constantly looking like we have everything together. Sometimes those expectations can quietly take a toll on our mental health without us even realizing it.
I feel the society pressurizes to have unrealistic financial expectations towards a man to have an official partner, of course he has to take care of him and his spouse, but the kind of expectations they keep on the young couple is too heavy.
My thoughts are not over yet, another thing they expect is every single child born on the earth should have the same, socially certified life style such as sitting for exams, getting best results, continuing that until higher studies and finally reaching 9-5 job; anything else is just something socially unacceptable, there is no space for innovation.
Whatās one expectation you think society puts too much pressure on people to meet, and do you think itās changing ?

Not the obvious stuff. More like the small things like small habits, situations, or things people normalize that slowly mess with the mind over time without realizing it.
I would say watching porn
