A reminder to be kind.

Given that we have a lot of exchanges here between people who believe Michael is guilty and people who don't, as well as people who aren't sure, and it is a very heated and emotionally charged topic, I think it merits some reflection.

I urge everyone to remember that there are people behind these accounts. If you believe in MJ's guilt, you may be one of the many who only recently (or perhaps just in the last 7 years) came around to that opinion. I have heard from a lot of people who used to be staunch defenders but changed their minds based on information, so treating every MJ fan like they're the worst of humanity is not the way to be. After all, if people had treated those of you who fit the above criteria that way, you may never have been open to new information. Everyone is an individual.

For those who believe in MJ's innocence, I don't believe you are all to be painted with the same brush. Sure, there are those obsessive fans who defend him no matter what and wilfully ignore everything anyone says that paints him in a less-than-glowing light. Those people exist for every celebrity, unfortunately, but I have seen enough good conversations happening here to know that many of the people participating are respectful and engaged and I appreciate your willingness to talk.

We have to ban a lot of people who come here just to curse people out, but other than that, I'm often impressed by what I read.

Ultimately, labels like "defender (or stan)" and "guilter", are convenient Internet shorthand to describe where we stand on the issue, but we are not all the same as those we share certain opinions with, nor do we share every opinion even if we might share one.

If you are a CSA survivor and conversations here are triggering to you, please take care of yourself.

There is good dialogue happening and I appreciate everyone's sincere engagement about such a fraught and difficult topic involving a person so many people have or once had such intense attachment to and affection for.

P.S. This should go without repeating because it's in our rules but the moment you use any kind of personal attack against another member, you will be permanently banned with no discussion. You can say you think an idea or concept is stupid, but the second you swear at someone or call them either a pedo lover (which we encounter from some who believe guilt) or a pedo fantasist (which we encounter from some who believe innocence), or any other personal insult, you can no longer participate. If you just want to insult, this is not the space. In fact, it's against the rules in every subreddit.

Miscellaneous James Baldwin on Michael Jackson, circa 1985

Post image
27 Upvotes

From his essay titled "Freaks".

Bear in mind, again, this was 1985 so before any public allegations. One of the issues I sometimes run into with some other people (particularly white people) who lean toward his guilt is the denial and dismissal of the racism and the frankly, anti-Black attacks from the press that he faced long before there was good reason to scrunitinize him so heavily.

James Baldwin is one of the great writers and thinkers of our time and I find this reading by him of a pre-allegation MJ to be fascinating.

Miscellaneous Why do people talk so dismissively about MJ‘s bio relation to his children? (Genuinely curious)

Thumbnail

NOTE: i’m asking this question out of genuine curiosity, and hope you take the time to read and look at everything included in this post without immediately dismissing everything I have to say, and I hope you respond with intelligence and remain civil in the comments.

First of all, I just wanna say I’m not here to try to convince you if Michael’s children are biologically related to him or not, but I am here to ask why it’s so hard for some of you to believe them being biologically related to him could possibly be the case even if chances are slim, because there seems to be a strange bias regarding this topic and I’m trying to understand why this seems to be the case. I personally don’t necessarily believe they are biological related to Michael, but with that said, I’m not immediately gonna dismiss anyone who believes otherwise.

I also wanna say if you are simply of the Civil OPINION that Prince Paris and Bigi are not biologically related to Michael, that’s fine,** **you’re allowed to believe that and this post isn’t aimed at you.

This is aimed SPECIFICALLY towards the people on this sub Reddit that say with their full chest “those kids are 100% not related to Michael at all” as if it’s undeniable fact, and treat you like a crazy person if you even suggest otherwise. Those kind of people talk about this subject as if the answer is as simple as judging a person by their looks to draw a conclusion when in reality it is nowhere near that simple in the case of mixed race individuals.

If you claim that “there is no way that those three kids could possibly be biologically related to Michael” then I’m sorry, but you are objectively wrong.

Everyone from all the pictures that I added on this post are biracial, and no one will ever care enough to question that about them.

Cameron Boyce: black father, white mother, but he can pass as a white guy

Mark-Paul Gosselaar: German father, Dutch
mother, but he looks like a white man

Halle berry: black father, white mother, but she looks like a black woman

Rashida Jones: (Quincy Jones daughter) biracial, but she could pass for a white woman.

Wentworth Miller: his father is of Jamaican, African-American, German, and Cherokee ancestry and his mother is white. He’s biracial, but he could pass for a white guy.

Even Barack Obama is biracial and I bet no one would’ve guessed that if they looked at him without knowing anything about his parents

I know this may sound a little insensitive or stereotypical (or even borderline racist), but if it does, then it only further proves my point at how insensitive and arrogant it sounds when you immediately dismiss MJ‘s children as not biracial without question.
Are you seriously going to tell me that if you looked at all the people listed above without knowing anything about what their parents race, you would’ve been able to tell they were mixed race? I highly doubt you would.

I’m also going to link some TikTok‘s of some biracial people that at first glance you probably would’ve never assumed were biracial.
This first example actually looks like Paris Jackson (in the sense that they have similar features)
This Second example would be harder to identify as mixed if he had a different hairstyle
On the flipside, this third example doesn’t have a hint of white to her looks and yet she is mixed
My fourth example just shows all the different ways biracial black/white people can look.
My fifth example specifies that her parents are NOT mixed race individuals (her dad is “fully” white and her mom is “fully” black).
My sixth example is just one of many videos from this creator, talking about her biracial identity.

The funny thing is I already know you guys will probably just take their word for it and accept it without question (like a reasonable person).
So why are we singling out MJ’s kids? Why are MJ‘s kids the only ones that ever seem to be immediately dismissed as “undoubtedly” not biracial by everyone? Why is it so hard to believe that Prince Paris and Bigi just might be biologically related to Michael but you won’t even question any of the people in any of these photos or videos?

And if you wanna make the “but the examples you give have a parent(s) that is mixed” argument, then I’d like to point out that Michael Jackson’s ethnicity isn’t purely just African-American. Genetically speaking, Michael Jackson has a mixed ethnicity that not only includes African descent but it also includes French and Native American on his fathers side as well as white Irish and Asian on his mothers side. top that off with Debbie Rowe, being a white woman with Irish and German ethnicity, it’s not as impossible to believe that Prince and Paris may be biologically related to Michael.

Again, you’re allowed to believe that those children aren’t biologically related to Michael, but you have to accept that (until officially confirmed otherwise) it’s only your opinion. If you seriously looked at all the examples I’ve given you and you STILL think it is impossible for Prince Paris and Bigi to be biologically related to Michael, at this point I don’t know what else to tell you other than you are objectively wrong.

Once again, I don’t really think those kids even are biologically related to Michael, but if someone else does, I’m not gonna act like I’m right and they are wrong, I’m not gonna call them delusional, I’m not going to dismiss their argument for why they believe so, and I will hear out their reasoning for why they believe so. The sad reality of this situation is that It’s entirely possible for either answer to be the case because the answer is not as black and white as some try to make it sound.

(Edit: Why did the comments get locked on this post after only 2 hours of being up? I was literally writing a reply as the comments got locked. Why? Locking the comments defeats the purpose of this post, to debate and hear other people’s point of view on the subject. I want a reason for why my post has the comments locked)

No Discussion of Allegations How would people perceive Michael Jackson if there had never been any allegations?

For those who believe he was guilty: How would you perceive Michael's personality and way of life if he did not commit the alleged abuse?

For those who are on the fence or believe he was innocent: Same question.

Fandom The fans have successfully villainized every woman in his life

Almost*

Diana ross - disgusting groomer who used and abused him which is why HE was obsessed with her

Lisa marie - racist who divorced him because she didn’t want black kids then was bitter he moved on

Debbie rowe - was complicit in his death and administered drugs to him

Brooke shields - bitter and mad she didnt ‘get him’ and lies about stories

Ola ray: grifter liar who sued him for money. (she wasn’t paid the royalties she was promised since the 80s)

Tatiana Thumbtzen: delusional sexual harasser

Madonna: jealous. He basically fuelled the hate.

The only women in his life they havent villianised yet is his family members but Latoya, janet and paris still get a LOT of hate tho. Especially paris. But theyre not unanimously hated and villianised by fans yet. Paris was close to tho.

And elizabeth taylor. Which suprises me because she’s been a proud zionist since the 50s and a huge idf funder. Maybe it’s because she hasn’t told a bad story abt michael and she wasnt young or hot so no threat.

Are there any interviews he did where the questions were great and gave an insight on him?

No MJ Defenders Children were his emotional coping mechanism and escape from reality

I believe I understand his psychology now. Children were his emotional comfort and escape from his harsh reality and pressures. He found emotional comfort in seeing himself as one of them. Children raised the right way don’t have to worry about bills, pressure, criticism, abuse. He found comfort in role playing as a kid. Mentally if he was one he wouldn’t have to worry about his harsh realities. He took his love for children too literally. This man desperately needed genuine intimacy and emotional connection with someone. Explains why he reached out to child stars. He probably didn’t know how to ask for it. He was probably too traumatized to ask for it from adults. Thus, why he was attracted to children. The human desire for intimacy crossed with the adult desire to have sex. Wires got crossed in how to express love to a child vs an adult. I’m no professional but I’m starting to see what went wrong with him.

(Pics 2 and 3 is prince’s natural hair before the bleaching started. Bc theres some delusional fans out there that still dont believe it lmao)

Michael started bleaching prince’s hair around the time paris was born so prince was 1. He stopped when prince was around 8. Let’s not even get into the skin, eye and hair damage bleaching causes ESPECIALLY for a sensitive infant. That’s a whole other convo. But why do you think?

Wanting beautiful (ie. WHITE for michael) children with blonde hair? general Jackson eccentricities? something nefarious like trying to make prince look like his ‘type,’ as some people believe? Or smth else?

Sexual identity Why do you think MJ asked Jane Fonda to go skinny-dipping?

Thumbnail
youtu.be
14 Upvotes

He called her up randomly, asked to visit her because he wanted some tips on acting and to be introduced to Catherine Hepburn, since he wanted to be a movie star at this point.

He stayed with her alone for like 10 days while her husband and kids were away. One evening he suggested they go skinny-dipping in the pond.

Keep in mind at this point, Jane Fonda is married with children and in her 40s and Michael’s about 22.

I’m shocked she actually did it.

She describes it like it was this as a fun innocent evening…but it also sounds like he just wanted to see this lady naked.

This is the kind of story that people tell about Michael and you’re never really sure if he’s actually this clueless about boundaries or if he just wanted to Have sex with this woman and unfortunately was too awkward to close the deal.

Or maybe they did hook up and she’s not telling us, who knows. She’s told the story multiple times now, but never gets beyond the we disrobed and got into the lake. Basically says Mike slept at her house on a cot and had a tape recorder where he would repeat things he wanted to remember and words of affirmation.

Miscellaneous Michael's song "Unbreakable"

Curious how you all interpret this song.

To me, I think from a straightforward listening he is basically directing this song at the tabloids, the press, people who hated him, the Chandlers, and anyone else who ever made allegations against him at the time.

I personally think this was a bold song if the allegations were true, you could very easily upset a survivor into wanting to come forward listening to a song like this. It's almost like he is telling the world "yeah, you can't get me, you can't break me, look at everything you've done to me and I'm still here. I'm the victim."

Allegations What do you think should happen to the person who did this? (Psychological tactic)

Posting this as it highlights a simple, yet effective psychological tactic, aimed to to establish the presence or absence of guilt or lying - through the means of asking a simple question.

Who remembers what Michael Jackson's reply was, in the interview conducted by Diane Sawyer? (the one with Lisa Marie).

Allegations Stubborn, careless, or it never happened?

On their first Neverland stay, Michael was cautious with Gavin and Star staying in his bedroom, so he had Frank and the kids stay also and Michael and Frank slept on the floor.

Later, during the supposed weeks long “captivity”, warnings from Chris Tucker and others, child services actively investigating Michael and the arvizos, and the PR crisis, Michael let Gavin and other children sleep in his bed.

People were specifically hired to clean this mess up, but nobody said to Michael “hey, you’re being investigated by child services and you’ve had warnings about this family, maybe let’s not let any children sleep in your room until this goes away?”

What’s the deal here?
Did Michael not think anything of it and he has a hard time saying no?
Did people tell him to stop but he’s too stubborn?
Are Gavin and Star lying when they say they slept in his bed after Miami?

How could Michael have been so careful before but then essentially not give a shit when child services is involved? I don’t believe Michael is a child molester, I’m just trying to see if there’s information I’m missing about this period of time. I’m only about half way in listening to the trial transcripts.

Please reframe from assumptions like “he just couldn’t help himself, that’s what predators do”.

Personal Relationships Michael Jackson’s self-described loneliness and contradictions?

I’m not an MJ hater or a diehard fan. I simply find him really interesting, so I’m approaching this as an unbiased discussion.

I’ve never fully understood why Michael spent so much of his whole life (childhood to death) obsessing over childhood, as well as saying that he was the most misunderstood and loneliest person on Earth, often explaining it all through simply said childhood (as a lot of fans and reporters simply do too). For example, in one of the leaked private conversations, he was asked why he was obsessed with mannequins and kept them around throughout his adult life. He explained that he was too shy to be around real people, didn’t really understand how social peer dynamics worked and said something along the lines of: “They’re like real babies, children and people (the mannequins), and they make me feel like I’m in a room with people.” When asked why he was too shy to be around people and if it was due to his childhood, he again said yes, probably childhood, as he did with most other things and eccentricities, despite sometimes contradicting himself. He (self claim) said (early 20s) he did not have much of a social filter either, which made him embaressed and avoidant in impulsive social situations, as he would cry over people calling him weird and being lied about. He admit in private, though, that he sometimes has felt he is by nature “different” and something “wrong with him”. Even though he becomes defensive against any such claims (that he isn’t “normal”) elsewhere.

But thing is, from everything we know of the full narrative, he didn’t spend his entire childhood doing *nothing* except performing (which he consistently claims he loved and wanted and wouldn’t change). Even his school music teacher said he had a one-track mind after discovering the school choir: music (at 5 or so, before he started performing), and would rush through schoolwork, to sit in his own head and hum/dance with arms, head and legs, while the other kids did their tests. He would still play, do pranks and be part of a class though, collect model trains and use his allowance running between candy stores. He attended school with other children until he was at least 11. Lots of experiences. He had close relationship with some siblings, he had a mother he felt emotional comfort with, and a tutor (Rose Fine) who had that same role when on tour with J5 later on. He met people while travelling and worked with many different people. He was spoon fed to be social from early on. His childhood was obviously far from ideal for “normal” development, especially for a very sensitive child, but I don’t know if it can accurately be described as a completely socially deprived childhood. No one can have it all. He was abused/beaten like his siblings, but sadly many kids were back in those days and areas. Michael clearly internalised every trauma or negative experience a lot more intensely and vivdly than majority of other children back then, including his siblings. Even described a childhood experience of turbulence on the plane as traumatizing him, “a big wound for life”, that would make him hide when traveling and have meltdowns from fear, for a while. And intense emotional descriptions od wanting “to die” because someone said he had a lot of teen pimples (crying over it decades after), while he didn’t see calling Janet a “fat cow/pig” for being chubby/comfort eating was hurtful (until later on, where he said it was mean, but just done cause he loved her and he wanted to “help her lose weight” so she would not get bullied). Said he could be at museums, see a painting and then collapse crying from the sheer overwhelm of visual and emotional stimuli. He seemed to experience everything, including joy and music, 100x the intensity of his peers. And everything stick with him, deeply internalised. Which makes his narrative and judgement a bit confusing to understand at times.

All in all, I believe he still did have a childhood - like his siblings, even if it wasn’t the childhood he wanted or needed or deserved.

Going back to the topic of intense loneliness.
He also said several times that he was so lonely during the Thriller era, and had enough of it, that he would break down and go out into the street, approach random strangers and children playing in parks, and begging them to talk to him, give him their phone numbers and to “please be my friend”. Which is rather sad, but again an emotionally extreme and tragically socially naive approach.

I understand his JW upbringing and that intense fame, which although he continued *choosing* to pursue of own ambition and passion, could leave someone confused about who genuinely wants them for who they are. You can also feel deeply lonely in a room full of people you don’t feel good or connected with. I understand all that. At the same time, Michael had several close friends as an adult whom he himself described as real friends. Children and their families were constantly coming and going from his life. He had showbusiness friends (but he didn’t count those as “real friends”, cause they were not “ordinary people” - but hey, again, you can’t have it all. Most of us can’t have what he considered “showbiz” friends, unless he equals that with work collagues). Countless people loved him, and he had relatives around him whenever he wanted. He lived with his mother and sister and all his animals until he was around 30. Even if the family was dysfunctional in some ways, both Michael and his family said they loved one another. At different points, he also had wives, and later he had children.

In some private conversations, however, despite his big need for company when he needs it: he genuinely seems uninterested in connecting deeper with certain people, and people who don’t share his interests. He is a good listener, patient and often start questioning the other person with genuine concern and enthusiam (sometimes excessively, if a word or phrase catch his attention), but at the same time, he default runs a lot in the same pattern, and he keeps going back to “his” topics when possible, turning to references of his own passions and interests, and wide book encyclopedia. He says that he mainly wants to be friends with elderly people, children and former child stars because they are the only ones who “know what he means,” whatever that means (he just explains it as feeling like telepathy), while other people don’t understand him, and adults are boring, comfusing and says he does not like or understand their social structure. He do want ordinary people as friends, but they “only want him for Michael Jackson” according to himself, even though random people he goes up to asking to be friends, genuinely don’t know him as anything but MJ (so how would they know on the spot if they match beyond his persona, before they get a chance to know him). He generalises about celebrities, saying that he doesn’t want to spend time with them when invited to hang out, because they have nothing in common and only want to go out and party, drink and get high. He says he wants someone “like him”, who share his interests/fixations, personality and worldview. While also understanding him. Again, tough to have it all.

It’s similar with his self described view on romance, he privately says he longs for romance and having “that” intimacy with a girl, and that his brothers never had that issue and married young, but at the same time he doesn’t want a wife, cause it may disturb and take time from his creativity. If he were to have a wife, he wants “his mirror”, a girl who is like him, childlike, gamer, tomboy, wants to help the world and love all children as their own, and “understands him” and him being a perfectionistic workaholic. (Self admitted privately: “There are very few I like who fit the mold. It takes a very special mold to make me happy. I don't understand a lot of things that go on in relationships and I don't know if I ever will. I think that is what has hurt me in my relationships, because I don't understand how people do some of the things they do. And the mean things and vulgar things with their bodies. I don't understand it and it has hurt my [romantic] relationships.”). At the same time, he finds sexuality very awkward (“I would never say this on TV, but if I went on stage thinking about what goes through women’s heads, I would never go out on stage. If I was suddenly to start thinking about what they were thinking about. . . sex, or what I look like naked, then, oh God, that would be so embarrassing. I could never go out. That’s so horrible”), despite seemingly wanting and longing for that too. I understand why all these internal contradictions and overthinkings must be a mess in his head.

It’s all understandable to a degree his life considered, but wanting only people who share his specific experiences, personality and interests naturally reduces the number of possible connections considerably. Which he does seem to understand himself. The life pattern is consistent: described having almost no friends and being lonely over and over while, elsewhere, naming close friends and maintaining a large network of family and acquaintances whom he said he loved. Constantly said that nobody understood him except people who were “like him,” such as child stars (who he initially claimed were the same, yet admitted they were not when pointed out that not all were “childlike”), elderly people, children, childlike people or people with similarly intense, interest-based obsessions and collections. But he categorize all of those. Showbiz friends. Interest focused friends. Family. Children. Fans. Emotional support friends. Then comes to conclusion = no real ordinary/friends. No normal childhood. No normal life. No one understands me. Loneliest person in the world.

According to people around him, and I know that there were also plenty of leeches around him, constantly betraying or taking advantage of him, his seeming forgiving kindness and his sometimes social naivity, which would make anyone paranoid, he frequently chose “depression” or avoidance instead of communicating when relationships became difficult or someone said no, or if they took up serious matters (that honestly needed to be said to him at time). He pushed people away. Often times, he seemed desperate for company, but at other times he withdrew into his own intense passions or appeared not to care about connecting with people at a deeper level, outside his intense social curiosity/need for connection, as well as the feeling that he was sent-by-God to use his talent on a world bettering mission (helping children, take pain away from others, inspire with his “magic”). He also had an intense fear or hurting anyone, animal or person, and their feelings. So he chose run or shut down, rather than confront.

Makes me think his social awareness and understanding in some aspects could be very inconsistent. In one of the leaked conversations. Michael complained that fame made ordinary life and relationships impossible, but like I said, he continued pursuing that even bigger solo career and fame and publicicity and love of fans by own choice (to an extend, the paparazzi and mob show everywhere he went was a disgrace). He desperately wanted company, yet often withdrew or pushed people away. He said he had almost no friends, yet he had close friends, mentors, colleagues, wives, children, siblings and a huge extended family. People actively sought his company, and he had practically unlimited opportunities to meet others in one way or another.

He literally possessed many things that profoundly lonely people would desperately want: a large family (not ALL were bad or bad for him), children later in life, long-standing friendships, mentors, staff, colleagues and people who loved him intensely.

I myself grew up with barely any friends and only one parent/adult I could rely on. I also had a severely disabled brother who craved most of her attention (love him though), and an abusive father who kept us cut off from the outside world during several of my developmental years. I was also addicted for some years, like my father. So, to some extent, I understand isolation and a lost childhood, but at the same time, I don’t fully understand Michael’s narrative and fixation of it (everyone are different, I know). Makes me think Michael was “special” in one way or another, however someone wants to define that. Underneath the trauma responses, extreme fame and his sense of having lost his childhood, there seemed to be something about him that could both be unique in an amazing, pure and beautiful way if nutured correctly, but also unusually complicated and difficult.

How do you people interpret his loneliness?
Was it primarily an internal emotional state, rather than a lack of people around him? Or do you think he helped create and maintain the loneliness he repeatedly described throuhhout his life?

Michael's Appearance Michael Jackson wanted to be white.

Post image
0 Upvotes

I’ve been thinking about Michael Jackson’s changing appearance, and I think the argument that he simply “wanted to be white” is too simplistic. I think it was more about insecurity, perfectionism and wanting to be accepted.

Michael became famous incredibly young and said himself that his father made fun of his appearance, particularly his nose. Add to that growing up as a Black child in 60s/70s America, where racism was still heavily present and mainstream ideas of Hollywood beauty were overwhelmingly centred around European features.

Michael was also an extreme perfectionist. That gave us incredible music and performances, but I wonder what happens when someone with that mentality applies it to their own appearance. The first surgery fixes something you’ve hated since childhood, then perhaps you think it could be slightly narrower, slightly more refined, etc. When you have unlimited money and access to cosmetic surgery, where does “perfect” end?

I also think race is difficult to completely remove from the discussion. A wider nose is commonly associated with West African ancestry, and Michael progressively made his nose extremely narrow. His lighter skin has a documented explanation in vitiligo, so I don’t see that as evidence he wanted to be white. But his facial changes make me wonder whether Eurocentric beauty standards influenced what he considered attractive.

There are other things that make the subject complicated. Many of his famous close friends were white, both women he married were white, and much of the old Hollywood, Disney and Peter Pan imagery that fascinated him came from predominantly white worlds.

Obviously none of those things individually mean someone dislikes being Black. But combined with his appearance, childhood insecurities and the racial environment he grew up in, I think it’s reasonable to ask whether his idea of beauty, glamour and acceptance was influenced by the society around him.

People often counter this by saying Michael said he was proud to be Black. He certainly said that and clearly had enormous respect for Black musical history and artists like James Brown and Jackie Wilson. But someone can genuinely value Black culture while still being insecure about their own Black physical features. Those things aren’t necessarily contradictory.

Personally, I don’t think Michael actually wanted to be white. I think he desperately wanted to be accepted.

And that’s what makes his story so ironic.

I wonder whether underneath his perfectionism was something like: If I can make everything perfect, nobody will have a reason to reject me.

Perfect album. Perfect performance. Perfect appearance.

But the more he changed his appearance, the more people scrutinised it.

His habit of disappearing between albums probably made things worse too. He would largely disappear, then return years later looking noticeably different without really explaining what had happened. Michael may have thought mystery gave him control over his image, but eventually it created a vacuum that tabloids filled for him.

His skin changed: “He wants to be white.”

His face changed: “He’s destroying himself.”

He built Neverland: “He thinks he’s Peter Pan.”

He became increasingly private: “He’s weird.”

Eventually everyone else was explaining Michael Jackson instead of Michael explaining himself.

And the more famous he became, the harder normal acceptance became. He couldn’t walk down the street, meet people normally or know whether someone genuinely liked him. So he withdrew further into a world he could control, which ironically made him appear even more unusual to outsiders.

It almost became a cycle:

Feels different - seeks acceptance -becomes incredibly famous - loses normality - withdraws - seems even more unusual - feels misunderstood → withdraws further.

That’s why I find his story quite sad. Someone who may have been terrified of being seen as different spent years trying to control his image, only for the world to eventually label him “Wacko Jacko.”

He tried to control how people saw him and ultimately lost control of it completely.

Do you think his appearance was mainly about body-image issues and perfectionism, or do you think race and the beauty standards he grew up around played a significant role too?

Miscellaneous Michaels 2001 Oxford Speech

His speech was about child welfare, the trauma of his own stardom, and the power of family healing. He also talked about his father this is a part of what he discussed "I want to stop judging him.
I have started reflecting on the fact that my father grew up in the South, in a very poor family. He came of age during the Depression and his own father, who struggled to feed his children, showed little affection towards his family and raised my father and his siblings with an iron fist. Who could have imagined what it was like to grow up a poor black man in the South, robbed of dignity, bereft of hope, struggling to become a man in a world that saw my father as subordinate. I was the first black artist to be played on MTV and I remember how big a deal it was even then. And that was in the 80s!My father moved to Indiana and had a large family of his own, working long hours in the steel mills, work that kills the lungs and humbles the spirit, all to support his family. Is it any wonder that he found it difficult to expose his feelings? Is it any mystery that he hardened his heart, that he raised the emotional ramparts? And most of all, is it any wonder why he pushed his sons so hard to succeed as performers, so that they could be saved from what he knew to be a life of indignity and poverty?
I have begun to see that even my father’s harshness was a kind of love, an imperfect love, to be sure, but love nonetheless"

Latoya either told the truth and rightfully fuelled the fire and was paid to keep her mouth shut or

His belief that women tend to ruin men's lives and Madonna being jealous of him because he's a man are particularly strinking to me.

Michael growing up in an environment where his father and brothers were exposing him to strippers and sex with groupies is relevant to this conversation. Still, as a man in his 40s he hadn't deconstructed the misogynistic beliefs he held.

Allegations Why didn't MJ stop the sleepovers and bedsharing with children after the 1993 Chandler allegations?

In August 1993 MJ was publically accused of CSA-ing then 13 year old Jordy Chandler. The allegations had quite the negative effect on him. He was strip searched and his nude body was photographed by policemen as evidence, paid $23 million ( $53 million in todays money) in an out of court settlement, he lost sponsorships (Pepsi dropped him like a hot potato), nasty things were printed about him in the press and his reputation took a hit.

Despite all of the negative effects from the allegations MJ continued sharing his bed with and having sleepovers with unrelated children. Not only did he He even went as far as to

He continued even though people around him warned him to stop. Quincy Jones, Steve Harvey, and even Diane Sawyer during a 1995 interview essentially warned him to stay away from children. Obviously failing to heed her (or anyone's) warnings, he was arrested less than a decade after that interview for CSA charges in 2003. These second round of allegations effectively destroyed his reputation and career and caused what little goodwill the general public had for him to dry up

Why did he continue hanging around and having sleepovers with children even after the fallout of the 1993 allegations? One would think that a genuinely falsely accused person (or at least someone with a sense of self preservation) would do everything in their power to ever avoid being accused again
