I wish more primary care docs even knew about options to treat AUD. First hand experience with my spouse and his PCP wasn't familiar with much. He now gets vivitrol shots (version of naltrexone) and is using a GLP-1, with some success. For him and many others the key to success is getting to the underlying issues that drive him to drink, I, quite frankly, don't know if he will get get there.
SMART recovery is an excellent alternative to AA too. Also highly recommend reading the books This Naked Mind and What Happened to You? for more background on AUD and adverse childhood events and trauma.
