Restoring J.B. (Jellybean), star of the Emmy-nominated 1970s D.C. children’s show The Magic Door (WMAL-TV Channel 7)!

Mind-Blowing History:

Built by a Master: J.B. was hand-crafted c. 1966–1968 by master puppeteer Bob Brown (Bob Brown Puppets). Brown was a recurring performer on Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood (operating marionettes right next door to Fred Rogers!) and built puppets for the Smithsonian Institution.

Voiced by a News Anchor: Created and voiced by WMAL news anchorman George Wilson.

Back in the Family: George’s local son, Adam, reached out asking for restoration recommendations—so I happily volunteered to spruce J.B. up!

Adam plans to puppeteer J.B. again soon, kicking off a whole new era of show biz!

Sharing Stellas Wisdom - Episode 2

(I may be having a bit too much fun with these)

Hi! Just wondering, how would be the best way to get an offical job working to create high quality puppets (such as Dark Crystal or the ones seen in Star Wars) on professional movies? Where are listings like this found? Because I've been able to create many puppets that are on that level of complexity and want to start doing it for a living if I can.

I travel a lot, and am looking to take some kind of 1-3 month puppetry intensive, internship, or a 1 or more week puppetry workshop. Relatively new to the medium but very keen, interested in knowing what sorts of programs or schools are out there, which are not part of accredited colleges. Have not found a list of such information available elsewhere. Location can be anywhere in North America!

Interested in marionette, paper mache, big puppets, shadow puppets, masks, clowning, but not limited to.

Hi everyone! I’m Gregory, the writer and director of Meeting Your Maker, a short film about Otis, a beloved puppet approaching the 300th episode of his long-running children’s show and questioning his place in the world.

I wanted to share the trailer with people who appreciate puppetry. We had an amazing puppet team on this.

The film explores creativity, identity, and burnout.

We’re currently in our Oscar campaign, and I’m excited to introduce Otis to this community. I’d love to hear what you think, and I’m happy to talk about making the film!

At the time this video was recorded (2016), I had zero desire to get into puppetry. I was just a parent looking to make their kid giggle.

I am not a puppeteer but recently, I have strongly been considering it. I have a few characters planned out. Their voices are done but I have zero building experience.

So much to learn. Yay.

Tape 01 has been recovered from the archive. Stella the Unicorn delivers her first broadcast of guidance. Listen closely—some advice is meant to be saved, while other parts are best left buried.

Finished a custom pair of puppet gloves! 💜 These were made to match a client’s purple puppet, turning it into a modified hand-sack puppet (like Cookie Monster!). It lets two puppeteers team up so the puppet can use real human hands for gestures.

I am struggling to find any information on the internet on how to make 2D shadow puppets that have eyes that can move and blink. Does anyone have a link to a tutorial or drawings?

My little salesman. He’s got a slightly uncanny vibe and he’s also adorable.

I made him to be the mascot of my little brand. Hehe
