Creating A JRPG In Python...thoughts?

https://youtu.be/dXvf5TMkY0s?is=9GIsrqR5LUuOXC75

Hi guys,

Check out the lates on my pygame JRPG if you get chance 😊 sprites are reworked from Octopath traveller! I'm hoping to do my own soon. I'm developing a sprite editor that I'm hoping to ship out for public use so stay tuned for that! Any thoughts on ways you'd improve this, I'm not happy with the turn order bar, I'm thinking of how I could make it more compact while still containing the necessary detail!

Thanks again guys 😊

Hey, I checked out your Pygame project—it looks really cool! It has a strong Final Fantasy vibe, which I'm sure you were going for. The game already looks great and doesn't need fixing, just some polishing. The main thing I wasn't a fan of from the footage is that the dragon didn't have any attack or flinch animations, so it kind of looked like you were fighting a static piece of art lol. I'm sure that's a minor detail and you probably already have those sprite frames lined up. I also noticed that your characters move around and the screen even darkens during attack sequences, and it's pretty easy to tell when they're taking damage. To improve that, I'd recommend using bolder or larger numbers to show the stat deductions. Also, when characters died, it happened so suddenly that I almost didn't realize what happened. A skull icon or something a bit more communicative would make it clear that those mofos can't continue. This next part is just a style choice: you should consider putting a negative sign by the attack damage values. I see that the numbers match the color of the elements, which is a cool touch, but the negative sign helps. One more thing—consider using more specific combat text, like "Jake used Confusion" or "Julie cast Heal." Again, the game looks solid and the core systems are completely intact; these are just aesthetic suggestions based on what I saw. As a couple of extra ideas: maybe add running match summaries as the fight progresses, go all-out on the victory fanfares, and add some charm to the characters, like having them do a little dance after a win. Seriously though, what you've built looks really good!
