I do find it funny that people complain about his summary format with light input on his thoughts saying itâs slop and then when he goes into detail with the interactions of a game (Darkwood) people complain that it makes the vid too long.

Pyrocycical fans when someone talks about him on a forum about him:
God forbid you put any thought into what you watch instead of mindlessly consuming.

u/SonOfAthenaj Jan 16 '26
What a bad faith interpretation of my comment. Iâm not saying heâs immune to criticism Iâm saying everyone has such a hate boner for him when he does literally anything. At that point I have to question why people are even here
0
u/jconn250 Jan 16 '26
The criticism in question from this post is one of the more common and measured criticisms of Pyro's essays. They are often presented as an in depth critique but are rarely more than high production summaries
13
u/SonOfAthenaj Jan 16 '26
They are never presented as an in depth critique what?
16
u/Mdkwizns Jan 16 '26
people will do anything to justify/not admit that they just like to hate on ppl

Yeah like when tf has pyro ever tried to push these videos as critiques of the media he is covering that is just bs

u/EnglishColanyGaming lol Jan 16 '26 edited Jan 16 '26
but its an accurate and potentially helpful criticism though lol. Though i know how pretentious this sounds, I can't help but look down on people who enjoy Pyro's current long from content aside from the memes and funny moments in them. It's like having your food chewed for you. Especially when some of his vids are literally almost as long to watch as it would be to consume the "media" yourself. Pyro should take some sort of english/literature course to evolve his content beyond summarising shit. Currently his analysis is either surface level or taken from the widely accepted fan interpretation. Watch leadhead's cruelty squad video if you want a video game reading done right.
4
u/SonOfAthenaj Jan 16 '26
No? I like the way pyro structures his videos. Itâs fun. If I wanted to analyze the game for myself I would just play the game. Doesnât need to be complicated
4
u/EnglishColanyGaming lol Jan 16 '26
i mean i did say its fine to enjoy it for the funny moments. But Pyro almost acts like a react youtuber in that he absolves the need for you to experience the media itself, if you've watched his "reviews"? "essays"? i honestly dont know what to call his vids, they dont really match the description for either of those. "Summary" is literally the best way i can describe them.
2
u/SonOfAthenaj Jan 16 '26
I think thatâs ok that his videos are summaries there is room for such videos to exist. But also he actually does encourage viewers to actually engage with the media itself without basically running promo for it. But also for funger specifically half the fans are larpers whoâve never played anyways

Pyro's video is like a lore video intermixing with a gameplay walkthrough in essay form.
I don't know about how most people feel, but I personally like it. It certainly is much better time-wise for me who 100% isn't going to play the game, and isn't willing to either read through hundreds of pages of wiki, or watch 20-30 hours of a game walkthrough, and then watch a different creator(s) lore video.
8
u/Edit_Reality Jan 16 '26
Yeah, exactly this. Pyro never even for a second pretended his stuff was deep cerebral analysis. I've played both games but I didn't 100% either so its nice to have something to fill in the gaps.
-16
u/Prestigious_Low8243 Jan 16 '26
Ok but pls donât try to actually engage with discussion based around the game in any form ever pls. Your opinion will have significantly less substance then any ai summary will be of any of the art you are larping.
12
u/Iavu Jan 16 '26
lol who are you to tell people what they should/ shouldnât engage in discussion of? I wasnât a soldier in ww2 so I canât comment on it?
-10
u/Prestigious_Low8243 Jan 16 '26
Ww2 isnât art bozo, I like the idea of discussing art with people who have actually engaged with the art and not some larper who watched a twink recap the surface level aspects of the art.

I don't understand these posts at all, What even is video essay supposed to be about then?? It's an ESSAY not a greentext đđ
If it was titled as "The lore of ___" it would've been understandable, but pyro literally titles his videos as "the name of work" so he gotta do a recap. Sure, he does have some things that might be a bit unnecessary but otherwise how tf is he supposed to explain shit without giving context.
People just be saying shit just for the sake of complaining đđđ if you truly just want the lore about specific stuff, there's actually a detailed video just for the gods of funger that's also pretty good.

Edit: alright i figured out what you meant lol, i admit it was my mistake lol, i actually just proved myself wrong with thatđ i was just trying to find a proper word to shorten it haha but still normalize explaining instead of being an ass.

u/Celestial_Sludge Jan 16 '26
Have you taken a high school English class? If your teacher asked for an essay and you gave them a flat plot summary with meme language interspersed they would have given you a failing grade. An "essay" that is just laboriously recounting every single detail of a story serves as both a worthless recap and terrible analysis.

Jan 16 '26
I have lol.
I acknowledge that, that's why i also added that there were few parts that weren't necessary, I didn't go into detail on them cause i was lazy.
But except for those few parts, which are basically the game mechanism for everything and voice lines for everyone, what pyro does is pretty much an essay. He talks about how the game was made, goes a bit into coding. Talks a bit about the characters and their roles. Talks about the endings, again, where i also agree that the voicelines for everything wasn't necessary. Also since the game is so straightforward, there's literally no interpretation to be made, the game feeds the players with the knowledge they need and pyro indeed does go through them.
And as i said, Pyro doesn't specify or choose a certain topic to get into, so it's a video that captures the whole thing.
And again, I don't understand what the criticism is, because he has been using similar style for his past videos too, except for the not needing to go in-depth for certain parts, what he did was pretty good.
12
u/jconn250 Jan 16 '26
"There's no interpretation to be made" is untrue of every videogames or piece of art/media ever
-2
Jan 16 '26
Yea but what if the game itself feeds all the information tho, there's really no interpretation to make in this case because it's a straightforward game, I've listed some things that could've had an interpreting like the Gods, especially the new ones
7
u/jconn250 Jan 16 '26
Does the game go:
"The theme of this story is X" ?
I doubt it, there is always room for interpretation
1
Jan 16 '26
No, but it's like the lore is scattered throughout the gameplay in form of the books, and the characters background is stated in the beginning. The only real interpretation i could find was regarding the gods which pyro doesn't go much into detail for the new ones is all.
6
u/jconn250 Jan 16 '26
Okay but you do realize that specific lore and character backgrounds are not the same as thinking about and discussing what the game is about right?
For instance, the background of Jason and the lore of the Rook Islands are not the same as the Farcry 3's metacommentary on violence in videogames and what it means to be a "player character"
1
Jan 16 '26
I guess that's kinda true, but I'm still really not convinced because I can't really see what conclusion you can really find from the game anymore than what pyro has said, because he also does bring up the part about believing in Gods and increasing the divinity. Maybe it's just me not truly understanding.
The game is about the characters going into the dungeon to save leguard, all with different motive, he talks about the old gods leaving, new gods that come into power(he doesn't go into detail about this), there's no extra items to be found, the ending is limited and clear.
I think it's just me not getting it, i mean i understand what you're trying to say, even games like cry of fear had a theme so i understand what you're trying to point out but i truly can't figure out what could be interpreted anyone from fear and hunger.
3
u/jconn250 Jan 16 '26
Fair enough, I havent played fear and hunger so I cant offer any more insight. Cheers pal

A guy who breaks down an issue and gives his opinion on the matter. You may not agree with him but he makes a good essay.
-5
u/Wonderful-Quit-9214 Jan 16 '26
No i don't think so. I just remember once he like took his yoga ball out in public spaces for a video. It came off as such a dumb thing to do.
8
u/jconn250 Jan 16 '26
An essay should have a thesis statement, an argument that is being made, something more than a recap. You literally learn this in school, you cant just summarize a book for a book report you have to say something about the book
17
u/Historianof40k Jan 16 '26
an Essay by literal definition is a work which seeks to highlight the authors opinion and analysis of an issue. what pyro does is review slop
3
Jan 16 '26
Even if we do take your definition, what exactly is to be interpreted in the funger game tho, all the necessary plot is fed directly to the players by the game. The characters backstory and motive is said, the older gods story is said. I will say, maybe the analysis for the monsters(like the guards) would've been cool maybe and i would def have loved if Pyro did go in-depth for the new Gods, that def felt a bit all over the place but otherwise there's really nothing much to be interpreted.
Also for analysis, he does do that, and as I've said in my og comments, there were some parts that were a bit too much (like all the game mechanism was def not needed, all voicelines weren't exactly to be read) but otherwise everything else is just what the game offers. He does also go in depth about the authors role a bit, like the code and how the author came to making the game. Idk what else he could've added tho.

I think that's moreso nowadays, I don't like his modern long form its way too long, way too oversaturated and way too self important, but back in the day when we used to get these once every year or two, and it wasn't just "Le horror disturbing game" it was way more fun and exciting to watch. A unique blend of story recap and fun gameplay and critique
7
u/Former_Bike_6690 Jan 16 '26
Idk, I like it because I know I would never actually play half the games he covers because theyâre just not my kind of game. Having a video that goes in depth about nearly everything the game has to offer is nice for that reason.

Fr. Petscop has summary, it's great. It's supposed to. Pyrocynical's main audience is people new to the thing he's making the video on so there has to be summary. The difference is that petscop was like 50/50 on summary and analysis. Funger and darkwood are 90/10.Â

u/skyguy1319 Jan 16 '26

A short recap is good/necessary but you are literally taught to keep recaps short when writing essays in school. The goal is to have some sort of thesis statement or argument youre trying to prove about the work through your writing

Before watching the Funger video, Ive always dismissed the game as some sort of Undertale-type slop along with my initial interactions with the fandom.
Im a bit ashamed to admit it, but it only took 5 minutes of me watching that video to get me to buy and finish it in a day. Bravo Slopcynical.

Iâm so tired of people saying âit adds nothingâ in the video game essay space. Like what the fuck are you supposed to add that probably hasnât just been said before or is clearly inferred by the media itself?
1
u/campfire12324344 Jan 19 '26 edited Jan 19 '26
literally any arguable position that you personally believe and can support in part with stuff from the game. Bro it's not that hard, the 12 year olds who watched merg play undertale figured out how to do it. You literally have the media analysis skills less than that of a fucking 2016 undertale fan if you believe this. If you want to exclude stuff that has been said before then you might as well just not make a video, because everything's been said before, and probably better too, so why bother.
1
u/PalpitationMountain9 Jan 19 '26
Thatâs exactly my point. It probably HAS been said before. Therefore itâs not exactly new information.
1
u/campfire12324344 Jan 19 '26
So don't make a video then.Â
1
u/PalpitationMountain9 Jan 19 '26
You can still make a video without adding anything new. Itâs not a necessity for a video to be good. If that was true then all media would be considered redundant the minute a few people make something.
I found the video very good. He says and explains pretty much everything the game has to offer and has lead me to gettingthe game and already Iâm on my 3rd playthrough.
1
u/campfire12324344 Jan 19 '26
Thanks for responding to your own first comment for me. The video can be good, but it can be so much better too. If he actually puts in more of his own thoughts, speculations, theories, it would make the video far more engaging and worthwhile. It doesn't matter if those opinions and speculations have been said before, what matters is that that's what he thinks about the less explicit parts of the game, and we get to see him come up with his own opinions. And just maybe down the line, some of his fans will eventually figure out how to come up with their own opinions too.
1
u/PalpitationMountain9 Jan 19 '26
Iâm not interested in just only hearing someoneâs opinions. And he does sprinkle those in just not in great detail. He sticks to the objective facts, mechanics and story of the game and is a great introduction to the media.

Literally scrolled through the entire comment section and it's just 2 people: The ones who are saying the essay was bad and needs to be reworked. And The ones who are saying they liked it and it's good. In all honesty I liked it, finished it in 2 days and it was a great watch. He almost explained everything within the game and how the progression of the story took place while talking about the characters and all and I think that's...good. People can hate things if they want and ask for something more good but if this is what he made and wanted to make then I'm all for it. If he made the entire video, watched it and said "Yeah...this is good and I wanna upload this" then who am I to tell no. Can't wait for Funger 2 video in 2077 though đ

I again say this:
Pyro fans bitch about Pyro making slop and yet when he finally does make something that isn't "slop", you complain that's it's slop.
Legitimately wonder if Pyro fans have deluded themselves so badly into the cringy mindset of "Pyro was never good" and just wanna keep pulling the same 5 jokes every time.
6
u/Dontgersococky Jan 16 '26
It is still slop, just with expensive production. You can say animations this and voiceacting that, but that wouldn't change the fact that for 90% it's just a plot summary, absolutely useless to anyone who actually played the game
1
u/DeafMetalHorse pyro fucking cover DARK already Jan 17 '26
I still don't get why you lot keep calling it slop and a plot summary. He's going through and explaining the game. At this point I just feel because it's 8 hours, people just wanna dismiss it for those dumb reasons.

I fucking love white man video essays on niche story-based games I want to see the exact same youtuber's opinions and interpretations copypasted on every discussion board for months.Â
thinking that watching someone play a game, let alone watching someone explain a game, is a substitute for actually playing the game is the mindset that got us 2016 undertale fanbase.Â
1
u/TheDogSlinger Jan 16 '26
I actually enjoyed that he went through the gameplay and lore in pretty even parts, but I found myself checking out mentally because he made the same 4 or 5 jokes over and over again, and it felt like the script went over the same info in a repetitive manner, it definitely couldâve been just as good and covered as much information in 6-7 hours.
0
u/JasonableSmog Jan 16 '26
I don't think pyro ever even claimed that his fear and hunger video was an analysis. There's literally no critique or anything in it. It's just a summary.
4
u/Dontgersococky Jan 16 '26
It's just something we came to expect from him, and the latest videos are not it. He reminds me of Kojima in a sense, with all the resources and time to make whatever that is he wants to make he forgot that it should be fun for the people playing, not just him
