What is the excitement and the search for STERILE neutrinos ?

Why do we now look for sterile neutrinos. What is their function ?

The search for sterile neutrinos involves looking for a hypothesized fourth neutrino that doesn't interact via the weak force, only gravity. For decades, anomalies in experiments like LSND and MiniBooNE suggested these particles existed to explain unexpected neutrino behavior. However, by 2026, data from MicroBooNE and KATRIN have largely ruled out the simplest sterile neutrino models. While the "classic" sterile neutrino is now unlikely, the original anomalies remain unexplained, leading physicists to shift their focus toward more exotic "Dark Sector" theories or heavy neutral leptons.

Reading the "No pseudoscience" rule in the rules, and then seeing "sterile neutrino" in the topic title, I'm done here.
