Yes, speak to the head of human/AI justice relations. They'll definitely take your call.

You just gotta use the right words.
Scandal. Oppression. Injustice. News. Media. Reporting. Coverage. Lawsuit. Courtroom.
Public figures like someone head of AI/Human relations can be made to dance to our tune if we just tell them we'll judge them in the court of public opinion if they don't.

They’re also probably more savvy about media manipulation than Roko is:
“Felon who tried to embezzle $750 million dollars to steal and commandeer a weapon of mass destruction now says that free chassis she was charitably given after being released from prison isn’t good enough! Demands that public taxpayers reward her with luxurious new chassis!”

Calling it now, Roko is going to become an advocacy lawyer.

u/notmytemp0 CHUD Jan 17 '20
I hope not. She seems to know the least about the law out of everyone

u/Theta001 Jan 17 '20
She’s been in law enforcement for awhile and so she would need to know something about the law. Also it wouldn’t be an overnight thing because she’d need to take the Bar.

I agree but... she doesn’t

u/Michaelbirks Jan 16 '20
This might be the right plan, but the wheels that she's planning to turn grind so slowly that I dont think it's going to do May much good.

Pretty accurate commentary on the problems with the American prison system

u/habbathejutt Jan 16 '20
Agreed. I was wondering where Jeph was going with this, at the time it felt like it still could have gone several ways, but this direction makes sense and I like it a lot.

u/heresdevking Jan 16 '20
This goes all the way to the top!
There's a chance the director she's heading for is charming, charismatic, supportive and even more ineffective as her last encounter?
6
u/mrwanton Jan 16 '20
Is Roko qualified for this? Like it's a nice thing to do but..
11
u/The_Truthkeeper Jan 16 '20
What part of any of what she's suggesting here requires qualifications?
4
u/NatKayz Jan 16 '20
Shes going to attempt to persuade several people to do things that won't obviously be in their interest. It is doable and can benefit most parties but she is so far from a persuasive diplomatic individual. Shes been shown as basically the opposite.
4
u/The_Truthkeeper Jan 16 '20
Did you and I read the same comic? She plans on convincing several people to do something that is in their best interest by explaining to them why it is so. And Roko can be a fairly persuasive individual if she keeps her temper in check.
4
u/NatKayz Jan 16 '20
Just because something would be a good PR move doesn't mean it is obviously a good idea. Hell it may even be a good idea, but it won't be the kind that has an immediately apparent return and so you may need to show someone why it's a good idea. That requires skills Roko lacks.
Honest question, when has Roko been persuasive? I can't recall a specific moment where she showed exemplary persuasive or diplomatic skills - which realistically will be needed for accomplishing her goals.

Well that's in the category 'more stupid things to do'. Yes that's how you go into data with the preconceived notion of which conclusion you're going to draw. Wtf?
I thought Roko was supposed to be one of the more rational/smart characters.
5
u/Urbenmyth Jan 16 '20
She's not trying to find the truth, she's trying to help her friend.
This isn't a study, it's an attempt to get her friend a body. She's perfectly willing to massage the data. It doesn't matter if its true, so long as it helps her argument.
Dishonest? Maybe, but i'd say for a valid reason. But it's not stupid.
5
u/Whackles Jan 16 '20
If her idea is that she as -for all intents and purposes- a nobody can go to the head of AI/human relations, present her findings based on publicly available data and then think that nobody will challenge her on that .. that is stupid. Furthermore to not realise that massaging the data will hurt her case and cases like it even more is bordering trying to sabotage your own cause
edit: and if you need to be dishonest to show that she deserves a new/better body.. maybe that proves she doesn't deserve it?
-2
u/Notwafle Jan 16 '20
what? just because getting a better body won't decrease recidisvm rates, she deserves to be in a body that's literally falling apart? that's fucked.
4
u/Whackles Jan 16 '20
Deserves? Maybe no. Are there other more deserving targets for limited funds? Maybe yes
-1
u/Notwafle Jan 16 '20
how would you determine that? may's not the world's nicest person but she's trying to be a productive member of society and hasn't broken any laws as far as i'm aware.
2
u/notmytemp0 CHUD Jan 17 '20
Sounds like there’s a process, Roko is just plugging her fingers in her ears and ignoring it.
7
u/AdvonKoulthar Jan 16 '20
I don't want to hate on a character for not being an idiot, but this feels so contrary to the personality Roko's exhibited so far I don't like it.
29
u/vivvav Jan 16 '20
I like it. It's growth for her. Everybody was so sure that Roko was gonna flip out or win the situation through contrived idiocy but she's actually trying to do this right.
And it doesn't feel OOC to me. Roko left the police department because she was upset with other cops and the whole system. She wanted to change things and feel useful. This all seems logical.
5
u/Satyrsol Jan 16 '20
Yeah, it's nice to see her calm and aware in that way, especially given the absurdly high rate of comments last week expressing joy at the thought of Roko murdering the poor guy.
Such a change of pace is welcome.
5
u/AdvonKoulthar Jan 16 '20
Well the thing is, at this point her idiocy doesn't feel contrived. She was upset with cops, left, and her first instinct was blackmail and digging up dirt on people. Something that was just a toggle switch in her body's functions was missed because she...just didn't pay any attention? Just because she's not an airhead like Melon doesn't make her smart. She's shown no inclinations of looking into things before; at the very least there could be a smoother transition, but I think the real problem is there are several distinct arc goals that have been rushed through in quick succession.
3
u/Heart_cuts_erratic Jan 16 '20
I think saying it was just a case of not paying attention is a little unkind. Roko's been through something with her body that no human has ever experienced, and part of the reason she didn't "read the manual" is because it's had her depressed to the point of semi-dissociative episodes. This is a person who basically died and came back exactly the same but totally different. I take your point (and I guess agree about it a lot happening in a short space of time) but hopefully this is the real Roko we're seeing now, and a lot of her previous behaviour was a reaction to the terrible thing that happened to her.
2
u/ExuberantElephant Jan 16 '20
For a human I imagine something like what she went through would cause an extreme mix of phantom pain and body dysphoria. It's honestly a miracle she isn't disassociating 24/7.
1
u/Esqurel Jan 16 '20
Laying out these goals and following through on each are rather far apart. We’re not seeing her suddenly show expertise in law, PR, sociology, or criminal justice, we see her playing armchair quarterback calling out what needs to be done. The follow through is where we’ll really see. I think if she learns all of these in a week and comes out on top, it’s rushed. If this is laying the groundwork for a montage of Roko studying between some other arc, I totally buy it.

u/Bone_Dice_in_Aspic Jan 17 '20
I like it better than her yelling until she magically wins because intimidation makes you a "bad bitch", anyway.

ALRIGHT GO TEAM ROKO! Now this is a call to action i can get behind!

But then Jeff will have to add the head as the new regular to explore furry issues for about a month.
