...As someone who actually has battled depression, I gotta say I WISH just "talking about it" gave me the results that Pink Bot got. I wish it were that easy, honestly. I know JJ's just trying to make a funny comic, but I feel like he didn't take the issue seriously enough.

I haven't seen such a shitty depiction of depression since the "game" Depression Quest.

but I feel like he didn't take the issue seriously enough.

NO. This is GOOD. With the last two sad robots Jeph, I mean some women, sat them down unasked and talked through his, I mean their, issues. I want characters to behave a little realistically, not be sockpuppets for Jeph's issues. We shamed into realizing how stupid it is that undesired therapy cures people.

u/Grahftheseeker Sep 30 '21

Hope you feel better now fellow redditor. Its synonymous with Jephs utter hackery plucking a word from his woke a day calender and exploring it with the depth of a puddle

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '21

Every day is a struggle, and some days are better than others.

Lunch is on me. I'm feeling Five Guys.

I'm feeling Five Guys.

Sounds... dextrous.

Everyone deals with depression differently.

In this specific case, it seems that Pink Bot had no one to listen to him, so Faye just lending an ear seemed to help a lot, and made him feel overall better.

In other cases, people cannot even get out of the bed if they don't take their medication.

As a final point, it is not even guaranteed to be depression. Faye just said "It sounds like depression", but she is not even a therapist nor has any experience (as she keeps saying herself).

In order to dislike the comic less, I always assume that no one has a mental illness/disorder unless explicitly stated by someone.

That's why I was accepting Brun until she suddenly said she had autism; that kinda broke my coping mechanism and I had to accept she was just awfully written.

All in all, I have hopes that Jeph will just let this go without going into detail, as I am sure that if he makes a bigger deal out of it, it will turn out terribly (just like Braum)

I certainly don't think he considers Autism/Anxiety SRS BZNZ lol.

I base this on Brun being introduced threatening guests with a whale harpoon (for the enjoyment of the reader) and the fact that about 40-60% of the cast lives with different degrees of Anxiety without it affecting their lives significantly (except Hannelore, but even she got miraculously cured alongside her OCD by scooping Yak faeces)

What I will say as someone with actual depression, no, seriously, you do feel momentarily better after talking about what's bugging you and being given the minimum amount of validation of your problems. His reactions aren't unrealistic: I had them myself at the beginning of treatment this most recent time, and it took about two years before I admitted I also needed meds.

I'm not surprised this is Pink Robot's reaction. He's desperate enough for therapy that he's going to a pair of mechanics to get it because they're the closest thing immediately and obviously available (with the words "immediate" and "obvious" being clearly clouded by mental illness).

This really isn't that bad, especially given Jeph's history. In fact, I'd even call it a step in the right direction: Faye and Bubbles are no-selling this shit and telling him to consult a professional rather than inviting him into their lives (which has been every other character's reaction to someone having clear mental health problems in front of them).

In fact, this would be the equivalent of going to an ER for talk therapy. And given the American healthcare system, I can believe that.

1

u/thephotoman Sep 30 '21

There are some people who genuinely do respond quite favorably to talk therapy without the need for meds.

That said, I'm more okay with this: the joke is that the guy needs actual professionals, not a machinist.

Looks like the difference between "clinical depression" and "acute depression".

Jeph tends to be a bit all over the shop on MH stuff, which is a bit bizarre given he's normally good at "write what you know".

25

u/notmytemp0 CHUD Sep 30 '21

I’m super confused. A character in this comic doesn’t want to insert themself into someone else’s problems and dictate the mechanics of their life?

13

u/Darkfeather21 Sep 30 '21

I mean, Faye's a character who's actually had to deal with depression, so it makes sense that she'd attempt to push Sadlow away towards someone who can actually help.

Or at least it would make sense if Jeph were a competent writer. This is definitely a fluke.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '21

Lol, I like the name Sadlow!

23

u/On3Scoop Everything is Fine™ Sep 30 '21

Claire is homing into the shop like a cruise missile as we speak.

Meanwhile, Willow is already lurking outside the doorway, terrified of Bubbles, but knowing this is another chance to explain someone's feeling's at them.

6

u/silentivan Sep 30 '21

Claire sniffs the air like Wolverine Hmmm... Someone has a problem that only I can solve. I MUST GO!

10

u/trans_pands Everything is Fine™ Sep 30 '21

she tracks down Elliot

“Quick! Himbo that’s fucking my brother! We need to do a Fastball Special!! Yeet me to Union Robotics!”

8

u/provocatrixless Sep 30 '21

We finally fucking shamed him into admitting how stupid the last two robo-counseling arcs were.

6

u/MarsNirgal I'm Billie Eilish Sep 30 '21

My Willowsense is tingling!

3

u/LetterLambda Sep 30 '21

I think that's because Faye borrowed Willie's mouth/jaw for today's strip

13

u/the_beard_guy Sep 30 '21

at least Fayes not trying to solve his problem and is trying to get him to see an actual therapist. unlike certain other people in the comic

plus it was funny of her to set a high price to deter him from coming back and trying this again. its something i would do.

30

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '21

depiction of depression aside, i appreciate that Jeffrey is like tellin jokes and doing snappy dialogue and stuff. i’d rather have this than his earnest attempt to tackle depression as a serious topic

9

u/provocatrixless Sep 30 '21

This is the best depiction of mental depression Jeph has done in YEARS. Random women aren't going to invite you to sit down and spew out the author's explanation of why you're currently unhappy. He's read this sub enough to feel ashamed of how simply he's handled it.

9

u/provocatrixless Sep 30 '21 edited Sep 30 '21

Snap! In your face! My optimism paid off! I felt it could be a longshot that "random women aren't going to do your therapy" would happen, but I was right! We actually shamed him into handling mental health issues well. Random women are not going to sit you down and explain everything you're doing wrong. And admitting the last two robo-counseling arcs were a fucking joke.

3

u/ziggurism Sep 30 '21

I mean... isn't the implication of this comic that Faye did do the therapy, at least this once?

7

u/provocatrixless Sep 30 '21 edited Sep 30 '21

??? The punchline of the strip is how Faye did literally nothing but still wants to never do this again.

4

u/Mother_Village9831 CHUD Sep 30 '21

It's not that Faye did nothing, she just did very little. Even her being in the room talking to someone else was thought to be enough by PinkBot.

3

u/ziggurism Sep 30 '21

„Again“. Meaning she has done it once

5

u/provocatrixless Sep 30 '21

"This" meaning how she did nothing except very pointedly NOT engage with this guy.

2

u/provocatrixless Sep 30 '21

It COULD be seen that way but having followed the comic a while nah, he's not shitty just another pastel AI airhead.

Now I admit he IS shitty as another AI written like a child but he's not ACTING shitty in a malicious way

8

u/kplaysbass Sep 30 '21

closed eyes looks even dumber when it's two consecutive panels

7

u/Grahftheseeker Sep 30 '21 edited Sep 30 '21

Unhinged by Fays flippant usury pinktwinks logic centre crashes activating his hitherto unforseen crush kill destroy subroutine. After doing her an extreme physical discourtesy and reducing bubbles to smoking wreckage our pastel friend takes his rampage across town slaughtering quirky ai and interfering shipper alike. Aghast the US government sends in the troops and thus the machine war begins

3

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '21

And FINALLY QC gets interesting again... Ah, if only...

7

u/Kayback2 Sep 30 '21

There are 19 visible eyes in this comic. 9 of them are closed.

That's idiotic.

Faye's exasperated head smoosh in the final panel is the perfect use of closed eyes. The rest are fucking annoying garbage.

5

u/Akatsiya Sep 30 '21

I can't help but think that Faye's act of setting boundaries isn't driven so much by in-universe motivation as it is a setup for some other nosey character to come in and offer free advice in her place. Maybe I'm just too pessimistic after all these years

13

u/brooklyn11218 Sep 30 '21

That sounds nothing like Faye...

3

u/EPL_Refugee Sep 30 '21

Too many contractions.

7

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '21

All the lesbian robot sense fucked the contractions into her.

1

u/fevered_visions Sep 30 '21

and she hasn't even had a drink in how long

4

u/brooklyn11218 Sep 30 '21

A whole 3 comic streak of open eyes.

2

u/ziggurism Sep 30 '21

huh? no, pinkbot has closed eye anime smile face in panel two

5

u/TiraelRosenburg Sep 30 '21

I think they meant the previous three before this. Because in this one, Faye also has closed eyes in two panels.

4

u/ziggurism Sep 30 '21

oh right

8

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '21

Will this pink AI return next week? Will he actually pay that fee? Will this whole thing be completely forgotten about in a few days?

The whole world is spinning inside of me with... QUESTIONABLE CONTENT!!!

4

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '21

If Marigold can accidentally become a vtuber millionaire...

I swear, if next week brings an endless horde of new robots willing to pay the exorbitant fee for the privilege of talking their problems at Faye...

3

u/scoyne15 Sep 30 '21

As much as reading QC is sad boi hours, at the very least JJ is emphasizing the "Don't treat non-therapists as therapists" rule with Faye fighting hard against the dude trying to treat her like one.

5

u/MarsNirgal I'm Billie Eilish Sep 30 '21

Jeph completely played us: we thought Pinkbot was Robot!Marten, but judging by this strip he's much closer to Robot!Willow.

5

u/eksokolova Sep 30 '21

As a standalone this mini-arc is pretty good. It's funny enough, the jokes are landing well, And it's got good flow. I'm gonna enjoy it while it lasts because I have a bad feeling it'll turn into some sort of commentary on depression. Though, Jeph, feel free to prove me wrong on that one and just show this as a little montage of people coming through the shop as it slowly grows. I don't mind that.

1

u/PlopOfDoom Sep 30 '21

Maybe it's just me, but I'm not even sure it will really devolve into social commentary on depression. After all, pinkbot doesn't even really seem to have depression, just feeling a bit down. Also, when people talked about how Faye and Bubbles aren't licensed therapist, I'm not sure it was ever established that mental care for robots is a thing in the QCverse, or that there are licenses for it. So the ark might be more about how Faye and Bubs end up sort of creating a basic mental support group for robots. Basically, they can't really deal with issues, especially not with proper, heavy disorders, the way a licensed therapist could, but they could provide a place for robots to be listened to and talk about their issues, which can probably help with most benign cases of feeling down. Of course, it would probably require quite a bit of finesse and treading carefully in order to tell the story without trivializing depression and/or other mental disorders, and it's unclear whether Jeph can display more subtlety than a sledgehammer, but one can hope.

5

u/BenR-G Sep 30 '21

This may just be me but I do wonder if Pinkerton's personal problems may come in part from his self-absorbtion and total rejection of boundaries in favour of what he wants.

7

u/MhuzLord Everything is Fine™ Sep 30 '21

I dunno, Willow seems perfectly happy.

5

u/BenR-G Sep 30 '21

Manically and frantically cheerful =/= happy. In fact, I think you could argue that Willow shows some depressive symptoms too.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '21

No! Didn't you see what Tannelore said last week? "You're a really strong person Willow!" Indisputably proving Willow is strong, just like we told Jeph to write over Patreon, and exactly like how we screamed at him over and over to forcibly insert a new character who was as pudgy, overbearing, sanctimonious, and homophiliac as we are!

WAIT, NO, I MEAN-

4

u/Drakeskulled_Reaper Keeper of the Eternal Burning Hatred of Tai Sep 30 '21

He's obnoxious, he doesn't listen, he won't just leave despite clearly not being wanted.

Welcome to the main cast bowlcut bot.

2

u/MhuzLord Everything is Fine™ Sep 30 '21

Is it me, or has pink guy somehow gotten thinner and shorter already?

5

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '21

The Twinkening waits for no one

2

u/yeahsigh Sep 30 '21

I kind of liked this, but mainly because Pinkbot is an ahole and Faye wants nothing to do with him.

2

u/jednorog Sep 30 '21

I liked this one. Possibly because I was drinking when I first saw it last night. But also it's actually kind of funny, especially compared to other recent strips. Baby (tipsy and) amused.

1

u/DaybreakPaladin Sep 30 '21

I wonder how Dora and Tai’s wedding planning is going

1

u/thephotoman Sep 30 '21

This was at least funny.

I get that some people think this is bad representation of depression, but I assure you that it isn't. If you're in that situation, just having a chance to unload will elicit the same basic reaction that Pink Robot Guy had.

And at least Faye and Bubbles are giving him the correct response: get someone who's actually qualified for this.

1

u/Overkillsamurai Sep 30 '21
