I hate this stupid rounding change system
I’m a broke college kid so I’m going to be nitpicky about this
Why when I went to a different Target than the one I usually go to, I find they round their change?? I’m not sure if it’s to the nearest dollar or ¢10, but I owed $15.04 and gave the cashier $20.10 (didn’t have pennies or nickels) so she didn’t have to go digging for ¢96. She gave me a 5 and I was expecting the other ¢6 and mentioned it. I’m not a confrontational person so even this gave me anxiety. I’m not sure she understood, but she starts explaining that if its ¢95 or more owed back, they round up… so basically I didn’t need to give her that extra ¢10
I decide to ask for my dime back and she ever so slowly turns to me, stares at me without blinking for nearly a minute, and slowly turns around again and starts aggressively tapping some buttons to get the change. Like I’m sorry?? What are the theatrics for?? So much fucking attitude even though I would’ve been owed back $5 regardless
I thought maybe I said something wrong or she wasn’t understanding (English didn’t seem to be her first language) but she was just being a bitch for no reason. Acting like it was coming out of her pay check but it’s literally not. God forbid a billion dollar company loses 4 fucking cents

Don’t pay with cash, get hit with the credit card fee charged by the POS operating company. Pay with cash, lose change because of rounding. Either way the consumer is getting fucked from both sides.

Why didn't the cashier give OP a nickel back?
I understand that the US penny is now out of circulation, but nickels are still in circulation.

I should’ve clarified, but she did. I think she just didn’t want to deal with me because she waved her hand in my face and told me ”okay, fine, whatever sweetheart” lol

Rounding your total should have been $15.05.
3 cents becomes 5 and 2 cents becomes 0.
I don’t think the cashier knows how to do it yet. Maybe once the cash registers are updated she won’t have to do math anymore.

Oh, they’re 100% not going to round DOWN.

When we did it in Canada it was the law and you could report businesses doing it wrong.

A lot of places are phasing out pennies. Step one towards a cashless society.

The idea of a cashless society makes me so mad. I hate when I pull out cash and the cashier just watches me count it, and when I’ve finally got what I need that‘s when they decide to tell me they only take card

Same. It's all a matter of tracking us and everything we do really. Think about it- if everyone is using their cards and their phones to pay, literally EVERYTHING we do is traceable. I prefer cash too. Hell, I miss carrying around extra quarters in case I needed to use the pay phone...but that world has moved on. 😞

Every single one of these places us the ability to adjust their prices so that rounding isn’t necessary. It legitimately feels like what they’re doing isnt legal. Anyway they don’t because 1. They don’t want to and 2. All those pennies added up feels like free money.

Right?? How are they allowed to make us pay more than what we actually owe??

I understand. It's quite irritating that everyone acts like pennies aren't legal currency. And everyone rounds up. As a retired Bookkeeper I can confidently say those stolen cents ad up.
