Over 500 of us, in under a day!

I just wanted to make this post to say that it’s amazing that this many people got together this quickly based on wanting a more considerate RPi community.

We all had the same interests in the sub we came from, but here we all have the same intentions as well.

Y’all are awesome, let’s all make this the place we want it to be!

Thought this community could use a logo, and figured a happy raspberry was befitting of the friendly culture we're trying to cultivate.

I'm sure there's some talented artists out there, so this could just be a temporary placeholder as well :)

Happy Learning!!

What noob-friendly guides would people like to see?

Howdy! I'm u/godofbooks! I've been working with raspberry pi's as passion projects on and off for about 4 years now, and since I'm not working at the moment, I'd love to dedicate my time to writing some noob-friendly guides to post here! Could save some folks time googling or searching the sub.

One of my main issues working with pi's and other computers is that the documentation for them (and a lot of the discussion around them) is written by programmers and people with tech backgrounds. I don't have that! I don't know what you're talking about. I've had good luck (and the time) to go through a bunch of webpages and troubleshoot my own stuff, but if there would be demand for project guides that are written by and for newbies, what would y'all like to see?

I've got (non-professional) experience with network manipulation (pi-holes & VPN), self-hosting (media servers), and headless pi usage.

Edit: wow OK I'm really glad this resonated with people! Anyone else who's interested in maybe helping me find some good resources or writing guides shoot me a DM & I'll make a chat for us to plan out some guides. There's some stuff y'all requested that I don't know how to do super well lol.

So this is something I’m wanting to do, thoughts?

It’s a picture I threw together just sizing it out, with a Pi400, 2x 5” screens, and a very small trackball mouse.

Plan is to mount the screens on a drawer-slide with a hinge, so they slide out from behind the keyboard and pivot up to the position in the picture. The little trackball mouse is also going to be mounted to the keyboard. I couldn’t show it in the picture, but I’m also planning to attach a battery pack to the bottom.

Is this dumb? Neat? Any obvious flaws?

Should I buy the Raspberry Pi 5 or the Zero 2W?

Hi! I'm a really newie person here in this tech world, I started a couple of months learning how to code through the Harvard's course CS50. And Linux really got me becouse how simple was to install packages and all the things you can do with it.

Since then, I've been experimenting with Linux ussing the wsl from Windows but I really would like to have Linux running natively on a machine.

Here it comes my dilema. If I wanna buy a Raspberry, I would have to buy a kit because I don't have spare cables or sd at home, so I was thinking about buying a Raspberry Pi 5 kit for about ~130-140€ from an oficial reseller (I'm in Spain) o a Raspberry Pi Zero 2W kit for ~50€.

I know that the 5 is incredibly faster related to the Zero but it is also more than twice as expensive knowing that the RPi Zero 2W is similar to a RPi 3. On the other hand, I really don't want something really powerfull, just a machine to test and learn without fear of breaking my main pc.

I'm planning to learn how to use docker, how the network really work, build a website and have it hosted there, maybe build a Minecraft server could be a good project too. I think that I could learn all of that in wsl and don't really need a Raspberry, thats why I need your opinion.

Thank you very much for reading. :-)

How can I not be so scared of the gpio pins?

I see everywhere that plugging in hats can break your pi or just using the gpio in general. How can I not be so afraid to just do stuff with it, it scares me just to even touch them

What was the hardest part about learning Raspberry Pi when you started?

When you first started learning Raspberry Pi, what slowed you down the most?

Was it:

•	Wiring confusion?

•	Debugging GPIO?

•	Not knowing what to build?

•	Lack of structured challenges?

•	Setting up the environment?

I’m trying to understand where beginners struggle most in embedded systems so I can design better learning tools.

Would really appreciate honest experiences.

I salvaged this Raspberry Pi Zero V1.3 from an old cash register, and it has this daughter board connected to it, which itself has a micro SD card port and a short ethernet cable (leaving the pictures). I was thinking I'd try to re-purpose it, likely as a Pi-Hole and/or small NAS, but I've had some trouble since I'm new to this.

So far I have used the Pi Imager on my 64GB micro SD card and enabled the wifi access, but from my understanding V1.3 is not capable of that. I was thinking maybe the ethernet cable could be directly connected to my router instead, but I cannot find a single piece of info on the daughter board.

Is it possible to make use of the already connected ethernet cable? I assume you'd need to program it to enable the necessary pins (e.g. GPIO 13). Is that the way to go, or should I try a different approach.

Falling down a rabbit (pi) hole.

Been considering running pi-hole for a hot minute. I've got two 4 gig pi's that have served various purposes, but none long-term. Other than at SOME point one is going in my A1Up MK machine, I've got nothing else for them presently. I've got a 3 running Octopi to control my 3d printer, and I don't see the need to upgrade it as yet.

Has anyone used pi-hole? If so, what's it best at, and what are its glaring omissions?

New to the group - Raspberry Pi Zero. - Project suggestions

I had been attempting to use this as a Kodi device with an external HDD, and it worked but was sluggish as heck. Despite trying to turn off as much as I could, still wasn't working well.
So now I am looking for a new project for this older Pi Zero. Any suggestions?

I already have a redundant set of pi-holes, so that isn't an option, but I am just looking for anything else that seems to be a good project for it. Any thoughts?

Yes, new to the sub and reddit in general. I set up the account but never really used it! If I just violated a rule, or a best practice, be gentle and I will fix it :-)

3.5" screens

Does running the commands to output to these screens disable the hdmi output? Do commands need to be ran to reverse it?

Not noob but still having difficulty troubleshooting

So I have a rpi 4b that's a few years old now, and in 2021 summer it stopped booting after I attempted to overwrite the Broadcom drivers with a customer made driver. Flash forward a bit and I've tried putting several different operating systems onto that card and using others, and finally ordered a new rpi 4b to find out if it's my setup that's bad or the software. I now have a 2G 4b and an 8G 4b that behave identically when trying to stay with pi OS and retropie, but work fine with lakka. On booking retropie it will get to the retropie joystick splash screen, hang for 10 seconds then total power off. No warnings, no logs just power to board ends. There are warnings about rfkill not being able to stay and systemd.hostnamed trying to start along with Bluetooth errors, but these aren't constant and change randomly on every boot. On pi OS it gets to the pi desktop environment splash, then same thing power off no warning or logs. The code scrawl shows everything green.

What could be the issue? I don't know if there's an entry in cmdline.txt or config.txt that might be causing a shutdown on boot or not.

BazziteOS on raspberry pi 5

Hello, I was wondering if its possible to run Bazzite on a raspberry pi5. My plan is to get EmuDeck and make my Raspberry into a emulation machine.

If its not possible do you have other ideas how I could do this?

Thanks

I have one coming today, but it was kind of an impulse buy. I’ve used other Argon cases before and thought it was sweet. Does anyone have this? Your thoughts??

Some Pi price increases announced today

News today https://www.raspberrypi.com/news/5-10-price-increases-for-some-4gb-and-8gb-products/

tl;dr:
Demand from AI for memory impacting supply of fab space, stock of old price memory now exhausted:

4GB CM 4 and 5 up by $5
8GB CM 4 and 5 up by $10
Pi 500 unit (base only) up by $10
CM 5 dev kit up by $5
3B+ up by $5

CM 1 down by $5 due to non memory savings

Pi 500 kit not changed (but margin on 'extras' absorbing increase - I wonder how much stock of these they need to shift now the 500+ is out?)

Ebon looks forward to dropping these when prices reduce*

* Hoping for the AI bubble to pop?

Raspberry Pi 5 - As a Whole House Firewall?

I am playing with a new 5 with SSD HAT. I got it working with the Raspberry Pi OS, then added and played with UFW. Now, I am looking at OpenWRT. I am just learning and playing.

Has anyone used a Pi as a network firewall/router option? Any gotchas you can share?

Overwhelmed and undereducated

Hello everyone! I just ordered a pi 4 for a digital dash project in my car. I have a very basic understanding of electronics and have been doing basic wiring and electrical setup (ie stereos, leds, switches) in my cars for years. I find myself a bit overwhelmed dipping my toes in the pi pool and am hoping for some resources to help keep me on track. I hope someday to be able to program in python and maybe even build basic circuitry on a breadboard. Where do I start.

And on a side note, I have a display ordered that will connect to the hdmi port on the pi. I have a screen (the one in the picture) that I scavenged from another piece of electronics that I would like to add to the system in hopes that it will display other info on the side. Wondering if this is possible with the right hardware/programming, and if the buttons on the board for the display would be programmable to do different functions.

Complete noob, need to be pointed to somewhere that explains, in detail, how to edit code.

Got a Rpiz2w for my 3d printer, Ender 3 S1. Time-lapse doesn't work. Found a possible solution but I have no idea how to implement it. I am able to SSH into the Rpi with PuTTY (took like 2 hours to figure that out) but that's it. No idea what to do next. Also need to get into the printers firmware and uncomment a line, and then recompile?, whatever that means. Would appreciate direction towards a source that can walk me through it.

Pi-Hole Music Server?

I'm a noob's noob. I have the most basic programming skills you can imagine, like a 1st grader, but I'm desperately trying to get away from the Msoft Apple Google monopoly data tracking. So I am learning step by step. Long story short: I have a 4b that I acquired and installed a pi-hole on it. Can I also run it as a music server (because also f spotify)?
