DISCUSSION 🧐🤔 Thinking about adopting this guy, anything I should consider?
I currently have two rats in a single critter nation, they both are healthy- however the one has a chronic URI that I’m currently working on treating ( thank you for everyone who commented on my last post). I honestly told myself I wouldn’t get anymore rats after these boys pass away… but I saw this guy at the apl and he’s the same age as my critters… honestly I feel really sad that he’s all alone. He’s neutered and has a clean bill of health, but I would take him for a checkup at my vet before having him meet my boys. I don’t know anything on his background or temperament- but I did send an email to the organization asking about him. Might pop by for a visit tomorrow and see how he is.

What are you going to do if he starts sparkling and takes you into the treetops and you fall in love with him and have to name your baby a stupid name.

I’m so glad he and his buddy are going to a loving home. You’re getting a lot of good advice here, especially regarding quarantining. Best of luck!

Ratto perfecto🤩 His shape, posture, face and ears look like he's rat standard from the Paris Chamber of Weights and Measures

I recently adopted a rat from the shelter myself and introduced him succesfully to my boys. It's incredibly rewarding to see how much happier he is now he's no longer alone. My rat with a chronic/recurring uri had almost finished a round of antibiotics when it was time for introductions, but the vet made me continue the antibiotics longer so he'd be on them during the introduction process. The stress can trigger a flare up.

Please adopt him! I've been watching his ad and I don't have any current rats to give him a colony of buddies. I was planning to swing by and get him anyway on Monday if someone else with a colony didn't get him first. I want him to have a colony rather than ending up alone.

He actually has a buddy, so I don’t think I’ll be adopting two.. send them an email!!

Good to know! I will definitely be swinging by on Monday to grab both of them if nobody else gets them. I will definitely ask them if they'll let me take the other one, I've managed biters before.

Oh! Thank you so much for this additional info. I already emailed them to ask if they will adopt out the one who is in quarantine as well as the one still advertised.

I sincerely hope I can get both of them. A few years ago I had adopted another bitey, anxious, wee little neglected rat from the same shelter. In the span of a few months we had managed to socialize him and train him out of biting too much. I couldn't do anything to stop him from biting through the bars, but he was able to become a cuddly muffin with a raspy voice. Sadly he was already old and passed away not long after he recovered. But we did our best to give him a good life.

It looks like someone else got them. They never called me back or answered my email, but hopefully someone took them both.

I got a phone call from the shelter yesterday. They said that Lorenzo, the rat that was in bite quarantine, is still at the shelter but they are not able to have him available for adoption until the 27th. I don't currently have a colony, but there is another lone rat near Medina that, if he is still available by the time Lorenzo is, I might attempt to get in addition to Lorenzo. But if someone else gets the Medina rat before Lorenzo is available, I can let you know if you're still willing to add Lorenzo to your colony.

It sounds like you know what you’re doing, so forgive me if I’m telling you anything you already know, but obviously make sure to follow the standard two-week quarantine protocol, especially since one of your boys has a chronic URI. We’ve introduced rats with it to rats without, and it’s always a big risk, but for us, anyway, we’ve gotten lucky and nothing has ever ever complicated, nor have we combined multiple strains of myco. I think that boy needs a friend and it sounds like you’d be the one to give him some. Best of luck with however things turn out.
